    I had an african grey for many years. It broke me for a long time when he passed. A friend of mine died in a car accident and my bird had learned so many sayings from him. It was sort of like still having my friend there. Since they do voices so perfectly.

      exactly. they don't just say the words, they repeat the sound. This might have been recognizable as a specific person who said the words. African Grays are an amazing creature, who once stolen from the wild, live longer than one human. Please only rescue and never buy a "new" young one unless you want them to go extinct.

    When I was a criminology major in the 70s in college, a case was shared with the class by the instructor. He had a 9 x 10 glossy photo of a woman in her late 20s. The picture showed that she had 7 or 9 holes in her chest made by a .22 pistol. They had determined that it had been a suicide. The woman actually shot herself that many times before one bullet actually hit her heart killing her. I have seen comments on other cases stating how strange it is that someone committed suicide but did not shoot themselves in the head. It is not as strange as one might think. In the 1990s, my uncle who was then in his mid 50s, had early onset dementia. He could see that the farm he and my aunt had worked their entire lives for would have to be mortgaged to take care of him and my aunt would end up with nothing. He went out into the barn and used a shotgun (in the chest) to kill himself. I think some people might want an open casket funeral and so do not shoot themselves in the head. As a side note, I realized years later that the story of my uncle's suicide was also a testament to a horrible healthcare system where that is the choice you have to make to save your home/farm for your survivors. They don't have this problem in the rest of the civilized world where healthcare is universal and you don't have to lose your home just because you are terminally sick.

    Thank you Dr Grande this is a great story.
    My brother got a African grey parrot much like this one, yet very old. I mentioned to him a parrot that old may have a rough time at his noisy home full of kids. It’s tag said he had lost his owner poor thing. Well my bro won the bid at auction. His wife & children were very happy, they stopped on the way home & got him a huge perch to sit on ,food and everything needed. About 2am the fire alarm went off and everyone woke up & no fire, this went on about every hour until daylight. It was the parrot every time he was lonely or wanted a treat he made the alarm sound. The kid’s suggestion was the former owner must have been hard of hearing. Idk my brother rehomed him because the family wasn’t sleeping well A couple,friends of ours who had a cabin with an open floor plan ,the bird could see his 2 humans at the other side of the cabin at night & the forest out window s all around, he was happy,so he never made the alarm sound again.

      It makes my heart happy to hear that the parrot found a home in which it would feel secure and well-attended to, to the full extent it wanted and needed. Your brother did the right thing. It's likely that its former owner was home all day and had little to do other than pampering his/her feathered friend. Going from a home like that to a place where everyone has many other things to pay attention to must have been very confusing and stressful for the bird. (I feel that one of the tragedies in wanting to share a home with these beautiful creatures is that they will VERY OFTEN outlive their owners.)

    i have an african grey parrot, they're such smart and social birds! she even makes her own, context-appropriate sentences (with some errors that are understandable given that she learned it solely from context and repetition!), indicating that she has at least some grasp of language, which is part of what makes the species so notable. it's sad that we don't know as much about their behavior in the wild, though, because i think that could give some really good insights into their behavior, and that's before getting into species conservation (they're endangered). they really are tape recorders, do not make any sound that you don't want those birds repeating.
    edit: posted this before i was done! i feel bad for Marty, and for Bud, and the dog. i can't imagine what it would have been like to have a brain injury where your deteriorating condition leaves you no choice but to trust someone who has a gambling problem with the finances, or what it would be like to be a dog or a parrot (an african grey parrot, no less!) and witness your human be murdered. it's common for pets, especially parrots, *especially* african grey parrots, to have symptoms of mental illness, like depression, anxiety, and even PTSD. these symptoms can often manifest as aggression (especially territorial/protective/defensive), spooking easily, and in parrots (especially african greys), self-mutilating behaviors such as feather plucking. 💔
    i wonder how a mental health clinician would go about treating mental health issues in a parrot, or in any other animal for that matter. can't imagine talk therapy would be all that effective, even for african greys.

    I have a beautiful but rather temperamental corella who I rescued after she had multiple foster homes. She had serious agression issues and resource guarding and is unable to fly. The biggest problem was she learned to mimic the sounds she encountered in her home of origin which had a lot of DV. The smokers cough and swearing she mimics isn't so bad but she heard things like "ouch, ow, stop! " and some far sadder things and still screeches them when she's stressed. I've had her 11 years and it still happens 😢

    Happy Thanksgiving, again, Dr. G
    The bird testimony could have been more incriminating, in my opinion.
    She was unable to control herself. He received $1,100 each month which isn't much money. But, she received over $3,000 each month to take care of him. That's probably more than she ever was paid through employment.

    The parrot might have been mimicking people playing tour of duty or something..Glad Bud the parrot wasn’t called to court..As the defense would have ‘pecked’,holes in Buds testimony and ruffled some feathers in the prosecutions case..But the accused got stuffed in the end anyhow and now is doing bird.
    Thanks Doctor Grande for another great video of a very interesting case.incidentally my mate once ate a parrot..I asked him what it was like and he told me it kept repeating on him..

    I remember this news story. It was really sad. I wonder if parrots can have ptsd like symptoms like human do? As the crime was so traumatic, it may have imprinted on the bird. Of course the bird may of just repeated it as like it repeats all things it sees and hears. But it's still very sad.

    • @Shannonbarnesdr1
      @Shannonbarnesdr1 5 місяців тому +7

      yes, animals can indeed have ptsd, a lot of abused cats, dogs, horses, do have ptsd and extreme anxiety/fears.

    • @yourfuturewaifu9061
      @yourfuturewaifu9061 5 місяців тому +8

      Yes parrots can display anxiety and PTSD like symptoms. Feather plucking can be seen as an expression of this. Responding in fear to humans or another stimulus of course.

      parrots do actually show symptoms of a number of mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. african greys in particular are especially susceptible because they tend to be sensitive birds by nature. it's not uncommon for even well-socialized and well-enriched african greys to develop behaviors such as aggression and feather plucking/self-mutilation from anxiety. they also tend to have very, very strong social/pair-bonding instincts; they will often become bonded to one person, even if the household works collectively to try to discourage this (the bird can view that person as a mate, which can lead to behavioral and hormonal issues such as territorial aggression, frustration, and egg-laying in females, so it's best to at least try to keep the bird from getting the wrong idea!).
      all in all, i wouldn't be surprised if Bud was traumatized by this. :( thinking of my own african grey while writing this.

Interesting case, I thought i watched alot of true crime but love that you come up with alot of crimes Ive never heard of. I was born in Grand Rapids and have family in Sand Lake. 😂 There's people capable of homicide everywhere and that's scary. There sure is alot of spouses that kill the other, you're suppose to go through life with them as your best friend, not kill them. 🙄 Thank you for uploading even on Thanksgiving. • @sheckyfeinstein

    Your respect for the avian crowd was greatly appreciated by my African Gray Parrot, Felger. It has been my experience that African Grays mimic humans, in the voice of the speaker themselves, but not before the bird has heard a word or phrase repeatedly. For example, Felger was fond of saying, “Hey, Baby, where’s the fire?” in my wife’s voice, but only after dozens of repetitions. He mimicked my cough after a lengthy illness. My point is that this couple had been at each others’ for quite awhile before the murder. Or, perhaps less likely, the parrot became fatigued with the bickering and shot both of them in a moment of weakness.
