In Brazil once it actually happened that we had 3 different presidents in the same day in 2016. The day Dilma Rousseff, the president at the time, was impeached from office, her vice president Michel Temer automatically became the official president but Temer had a flight booked to China that same day so when the plane left the Brazilian territory, the Leader of Congress Rodrigo Maia became the effectively acting president because we have a constitutional provision that makes the Leader the president pro temporare when the official president is abroad. Crazy times lol

+J.J. McCullough Brazil's presidential history is quite exciting.
There was this time in 1954 when President Getúlio Vargas committed suicide. Vice-President João Café Filho assumed the office and had a heart attack a year later. The Speaker of the House Carlos Luz was sworn in as Acting President, but he was found to be part of this great political-military conspiracy to bring down democracy. He was impeached in his third day as president.
Meanwhile, Café Filho recovered his health and wanted to get back into office. Segments of the Army that were loyal to democracy questioned him, fearing he might also be part of the conspiracy. As he was unaware of all the political drama that was happening while he was hospitalized, he was not very happy with all those questions and refuse to make any political promises to the military. On the next day, the Army put him under house arrest and Congress impeached its second President that week.
The President pro tempore of the Senate Nereu Ramos assumed as President for remaining of the Varga's term.

Pedro Lascuarín was the Secretary of Foreing Affairs in President Francisco Madero's Cabinet, According to te Mexican Constitution a the time (the reformed Constitution of 1857) when the president renouced then the vicepresident would become president, but if there were no Vicepresident then the Secretary of F. A. Would become the new provisional president, and actually three years beflre that same situation occured, when the Dictator General Porfirio Diaz was overthrow from the presidency, his Vicepresident Ramón Corral renounced too, so Diaz Secretary of F.A. Francisco León de la Barra became president, then he made a Convocation for special elections in wich Madero won the presidency and a man called Abraham González the vicepresidency, then González renounced the vicepresidency to became Governor of the state of Chihuahua and Madero proposed to the senate the nomination of José María Pino Suarez as his VP, but remember that old president Diaz, well the military actually enjoyed a lot of his regime, and there were some struggles between Madero's policies and the rich military classes, so with the aid of President Taft's ambassador Henry Lane Wilson made a coup de etat, in ten days the capital pf Mexico became a bloodbath, the military planed to deposed Madero and installed to General Bernanrdo Reyes as President, to call new elections to wich former president Diaz Nephew Felix Diaz could compete, and the rebel forces were commanded by the generals Manuel mondragon and Aureliano blanquet, the planned failed, Reyes was killed in a calvary charge against the palacio, and Madero called to the capital to a retkred generañ to ajd him, Victoriano Huerta, but Huerta betrayed him, and allied himself with the other generals, then made madero and pino suarez renounce, then Lascuarin was sworn president and his only act as ñresident was to made Huerta his Secretary of Foreing Affairs, and the he renounced, the formallities took 45 minjtes, thus he was the shortest term president ever, four years later the new congress supresed the rules of presidential seccesion and even eliminated the post of vicepresident

In Ireland, because the President is a mainly ceremonial head of state, there is no Vice-President, but whenever there is a vacancy in the Presidency, the Irish Constitution provides for a body called the 'Presidential Commission', which acts as a sort of co-acting president. It is made up of the Ceann Comhairle (the speaker of the Dáil, i.e. the lower house), the Cathaoirleach (speaker of the Seanad, i.e. the senate) and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
There have been a few times that the Presidential Commission has been needed between the time that the Presidency falls vacant and the time when a new President is elected and sworn in (such as whenever a President dies or resigns), or whenever the President is out of the country on a State Visit, but the funniest thing I think about it is the fact that, due to a quirk in the wording of the Constitution, the outgoing President's term ends at midnight but their successor's term doesn't start until they're sworn in at midday, even in cases where the President is being inaugurated after being re-elected to a 2nd consecutive term!
TL;DR, in Ireland, due to a quirk in the wording used in the Constitution, for 12 hours on inauguration day, the speakers of the 2 houses of the parliament and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court serve as joint-acting President until the new President is sworn in, even when a President has been re-elected to a 2nd consecutive term.

Another fact, maybe not as interesting as this one or any of the other ones, but I find it interesting anyway :)
There was a time when Ireland had 3 different governments in the space of about 18 months.
After the June 1981 general election, the result was inconclusive. The outgoing Fianna Fáil government, led by Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Charlie Haughey, lost its majority - the two main opposition parties, Fine Gael and Labour, together had more seats than Fianna Fáil, but not enough for a majority. Nevertheless, they formed a minority coalition government, with Fine Gael leader Garret FitzGerald as Taoiseach, and held on until they lost a vote on the budget, meaning another general election was called in February 1982.
After the February 1982 election, Fianna Fáil overtook the Fine Gael-Labour coalition in terms of seats and formed a new government, with Charlie Haughey returning as Taoiseach, but were still short of a majority.
So, they hung on to power for about 9 months until they had to call yet another election in November 1982, at which point the people basically went "Feck it!" and gave the Fine Gael-Labour coalition a majority, with Garret FitzGerald serving as Taoiseach until 1987.

The US state of New Jersey had 6 governors in a single year, between January 2001 and January 2002, with most of the turnover within the last 10 days before Jim McGreevey took office.
These were the days before the office of lieutenant governor was created (c.2007), and the acting state senate president took over as governor instead. Since the state senate was sworn in before the governor, NJ transitioned between a small parade of acting governors despite McGreevey being the governor-elect.
While the state senate president was acting as governor, he would serve both as the head of the legislative body (passing laws) and as the chief executive (administering laws) which was a very unique and powerful arrangement in a state where the governor was already granted more power than his counterparts across the country.

And the UK was formed until 1801 when Great Britain (England and Scotland which merged in 1707) and Ireland unified and the borders as we know it were created when Ireland became independent.

The sad fact about Lady Jane Grey was she never wanted to Queen, pushed into by her scheming Father. Infact intially she was almost relieved when she was dethroned by Mary I.
That relief ended when Mary's regime decided to execute her - a decision spurred by her's father's and brothers' involvement in the failed rebellion of Thomas Wyatt the Younger.
The only silver lining is that with her sentencing of "to be burned alive on Tower Hill or beheaded as the Queen pleases" (burning was the traditional English punishment for treason committed by women - under the reasoning that the sight of a woman being hung, drawn and quartered would be too "obscene". No, I don't understand that reasoning either.) Mary had the small mercy to choicing the beheading option.
Not much of a silver lining, I know.

Hey JJ, great clip, again. South Africa recently kicked out President Zuma and replaced him with Ramaphosa... so I was looking at past presidents of South Africa and it looks like only Nelson Mandela was ever able to complete a term... there were some who did a second term, but then didn’t finish that term. To have every single presidency, bar one, terminated early for the entire existence of a country, must be some kind of record... and probably says something about the volatility of the politics in that place.

King Edward VIII reigned from January 20th 1936 to December 11th 1936. It’s not as insanely short as some of these US presidents but it is an interesting story that had a lot of controversy among the royal family and British public because many people thought that when King Edward VIII abdicated that he caused a lot of stress on his brother King George VI causing him a more severe habit of chain smoking, thus causing him to develop several cancerous lung tumours. Like I said it was not as short as some of these other people’s terms but it is an interesting story.

Not as exciting as all the other stories in the comments, but I think this is quite interesting:
Since there is not yet any restriction in Germany, as to how long a person may serve as chancellor, we’ve only ever had eight federal chancellors, since our nation’s foundation. Because of that, almost every German, who is slightly interested in politics, can name you all eight of these people. This makes it kind of remarkable that Germany actually has had a ninth person in the office!
After the resignation of chancellor number four (social democrat, Willy Brandt), his “Vice chancellor” Walter Scheel took over and essentially acted as chancellor from May 7th to May 16th 1974. Now the office of vice chancellor is nowhere to be found in our constitution (although the media sure does make it seem like there is). Instead, the constitution only mentions that the chancellor has a deputy, amongst his or her ministers. It doesn’t mention any qualifications as to who that person is specifically, but the “title” (that doesn't legally exist) is usually given to the leader of the smaller coalition party. Scheel himself was leader of the FDP, the free democrats, or so called Liberals, a center to center-right leaning party. Back then it was the only party in parliament, other than the big two people’s parties, and always had very few seats when compared to them (Of course today we have six parties there). So they were the little guy, the one struggling to rob some votes of the traditional two voter blocks...
But because our fourth chancellor resigned, because a chancellor’s resignation doesn’t necessarily mean that there have to be new elections, because a new candidate had to be found first and because nobody had to vote on who’s running the government in the meantime, Walter Scheel got to act as the only liberal chancellor in our history. In fact this makes him the only “chancellor”(ish person) in our nation’s history, who was neither Christian democrat (right-wing-big guy), nor a Social democrat (left-wing-big guy).
Oh and about two months later he was elected Germany’s president as well. So that must have been a good few months for him. :)
Edit (If anybody cares): Here's a video of Walter Scheel singing "On the yellow carriage" on national television in the same year. ua-cam.com/video/YGlO961zcF4/v-deo.html This little clip caused a lot of outrage in political spheres at the time, but sure as hell made him one of the most popular politicians at the time. The song stayed in the charts for weeks! Not because it sounded great (Even at the time it must have sounded really old to most Germans) but because people enjoyed seeing their politicans being humanized. Still his personal success never really had any noticable effect on his party's stats (which I'm not all that sad about haha).

Maybe in addition to that, another funny or interesting story about German presidents mistake is the unintenional opening of the wall. In the night from the 9th to 10th November 1989 the wall got opened from the GDR. in fact they decided to open it somewhen in the future but didn't wrote a date or note for that on the paper for Schabowski (the speaker) at that time. So when he announced it in public TV a reporter asked like "When" and he just said sth like "since there is no note from now on". So a lot of people just directly went to the wall and walked peacefully out of the GDR after convincing and showing the news to the guards. A lot of them returned the same day after just looking a little bit around in the other Germany.

In Spring 2016 we had a presidential election in Austria. In the second round the two candidates Alexander van der Bellen (Green Party) and Norbert Hofer (Freedom Party) battled it out. Alexander van der Bellen won and was scheduled to assume office on 9 July.
However, the results of the second round of voting were annulled after the results in some administrative districts were challenged, and the Constitutional Court of Austria found that Austrian electoral law had been disregarded. In the end it doesn't even matter, van der Bellen ultimately became president of Austria.
(Re)Elections were set for 2 October 2016. Until then, outgoing Austrian president Heinz Fischer was replaced on an interim basis by the three presidents of Parlament, the "National President Council" of which Hofer! was coincedentally a member^^ So basically Hofer lost the election but was still legally head of state, and because the revote was postponed (technical issues) he was in office for half a year.

True! The current US Constitution was written in 1787! In fact, the 1789 date was when the US Constitution came into full effect, with the inauguration of the first President, Congress, and Supreme Court. The wait is, of course, for states to ratify the Constitution and hold the elections to the presidency and Congress. In other words, dating the current Constitution to 1789 is only half-right!

In the United States, the Constitution only prescribes that an office holder make an oath (or affirmation) before exercising the office, but it doesn't require that it literally be done at the hour and minute at which the transition from the prior holder to the new one occurs. (Nor does it even require that it be spoken before a large gathering at that moment.) A valid oath could also be exercised in written form. The point is that such matters as not taking an oath on Sunday are dealt with easily by taking the oath on Saturday. The new office holder would still legally assume the office on Sunday.
