you know, I discovered Tom years ago around '85 and I was in the middle of a very physically and emotionally painful upheaval. But I see no reason that he would not appeal to someone who has never been though any of that. We all come from somewhere and to be human is to suffer. So if you dig Tom, cheers, there is plenty of time in life to suffer. But it is not required to dig on Waits.
Damn, what a great raspy voice! I love it ! I hope he makes a lot more songs before he leaves us because there has to be more of this. May be sing till he's 99.
this is one of the songs he wrote during the making of the documentary "Long Gone" about train riding culture in the late 90's. He was asked to write the soundtrack and met a bunch of different infamous hobo's from the FTRA crew including Dogman Tony, Dante Fuqwa, Horizontal John, Joshua Long Gone, NY Slim and others. A bunch of those songs ended up on Mule Variations.
@mysteria31 Bollox! I haven't experienced significant pain in my life and I absolutly love all albums from this great man. The strength behind Waits is that he can get that such emotion into his songs that the listener is roped into that emotion whatever it happens to be.
I used to sing this to my daughter as a lullaby. I know I'm a weird dad but it worked and it was the only song I could remember the words to. Sung in a low gentle voice it has a nice tune and is calming. Very nice video! Is it a Tom official or did you make it?
@@patrickkeefe4179 , I don't know that one, will check it out. Most all of them are actually creepy. Ring around the Rosies is about the plague possibly. So, I guess this tom waits song is perfect for a lullaby.
hated him as a kid and love him as a adult...got a house full of cocatoos that LOVE his music- they are smarter than me//////////hes on my bucket list (Last 3)

handymandan100 - You should hear John Prine's "The Hobo Song"( if you haven't already ). This my first time to hear Tom Waits' Cold Water. I love it. Prine's Hobo is certainly up there with the best. The best version of The Big Rock Candy Mountain is from the Oh Brother soundtrack.
@mysteria31 ... Oh, yes...It is true...Tom sings of where we all are that Groc his material...Tom is the slickest slang slasher in the industry, surpassing Dylan and all for content...thinking of his ensemble of hip street slang, strung together like "Our Gang"...Tom punches holes in our facades..leveling us to our common denominator...the experience of the street...now...I that is the main call...he nails the scene so perfectly...examples a plenty..."Don't by roses on the streets" Know this???
@mysteria31 Bullshit. I haven't been through squat. Not only does he 'appeal' to me, I'm actually a bit obsessed by his abilities. He's amazing. One doesn't need to have been 'troubled' in some way to appreciate talent & artistry. Quit projecting.
hipsters will be hipsters and we can all be pretentious ,if you dont like Tom Waits listen to something else but beware the pretentious hipsters might have listened to that also. O dear ,how sad never mind.
Any other Buckos here listening to this great music recommended by a great man?
yes
Tom Waits is a genius! this song is nothing new nor original, but the way he makes FEEL AND LIVE things is unique !
That filthy guitar just killed 40 years worth of million-notes heavy metal solo's
Thank you for rekindling my faith in people. If only for a minute ....
Amen! Gotta love Marc Ribot

Tom official video has pic on rail tracks 😎🎸😎
I love this video and have come back many times over the years to enjoy it (and send it to friends as a refresher 🙂)
My favorite Tom Waits song, beautiful & harsh, perfect, says everything so simply. The vid went with it well also.

I'm obsessed with this song.
He's the Man !
That reminds me: time to clean my room.
Every morning when hungover and I reach for that good shit. God bless you Tom.
Finally being inducted into the Hall Of Fame I heard. One of the greatest artists to grace this earth!
Damn, what a great raspy voice! I love it ! I hope he makes a lot more songs before he leaves us because there has to be more of this. May be sing till he's 99.
fantastic! I love the guitar solo and above all, I love to scream the lyrics when I'm on the high way. Another masterpiece.
Thanks Tom!
20 years of dis!
Ive had a great life. No real hardship.. Love Tom Waits with all my heart and soul :)

This video represents the song perfectly IMO
this and "big Rock candy mountain" are the best bum songs ever written...
Great man Great music been there still cold
Possibly Waits' best song.
Waits is a kindly soul
I'm glad that Dionysus walks among us.
raw bluesssssssssssssss love it
This song just does all the right things for me. :)
Pure ecstasy. This is THE story of my life. It feels so good to hear it.
I love Tom 😎🎸😎
This ain’t the official video . Yet it’s still good .
Beautiful video. Thanks. Saved me the major trouble of formulating this message. Now I can do something else with my life.
So sad and so raw
Tom Waits cultivated this incredible voice through years of following The Cigarettes & Bourbon Plan.
My kind of man...
a goood friend of mine made me discover this song, she's cool, pretty, likes pastis and cigarettes and is a HuGE Fan of Tom Waits ! thx !!!
Fantastic!
Awsome video!
Hey, Americans, do you feel the water has got a bit warmer (asking in 2022)?
Btw.: The visuals in this video are really Tom-Waits-fantastic .
Let us laugh while we can. There will be pleeeeenty of time to cry later.
Dang that’s good
I see what you mean but the way he describes it it's so real that he could sing about space and I would still be able to connect with it.
Fantastic song and fantastic video!!!! Love it. Good job! x

Well I woke up this morning
With a Koala
With a Koala
Better watch out..... 70 percent of koalas have clamydia.

2:17 - 2:26 (paks at 2:22) i love the changing of intonation in his voice. something only waits can do

Down in the willow garden another great lullaby but is a super gruesome murder ballad

Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
Well the police at the station
And they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Police at the station
And they don't look friendly
They don't look friendly well
They don't
Blind or crippled
Sharp or dull
I'm reading the Bible
By a 40 watt bulb
What price freedom
Dirt is my rug
Well I sleep like a baby
With the snakes and the bugs
Well the stores are open
But I ain't got no money
Well I ain't got no money
Stores are open but I
Ain't got no money
Ain't got no money
Well I ain't
Found an old dog
And he seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems to like me
Found an old dog and he
Seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems
Seen them fellows
with the card board signs
Scrapin up a little money
To buy a bottle of wine
Pregnant women and
The Vietnam vets I say
Beggin on the freeway
Bout as hard as it gets
Well I slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still
It was cool and still
Slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still and it
Was cool
Slept all night in the Cedar grove
I was born to ramble
Born to rove
Some men are searchin for the
Holy Grail
But there ain't nothin sweeter
Than ridin the rails
I look 47 but I'm 24
Well they shooed me away
From here the time before
Turned their backs
And they locked their doors
I'm watching T.V. in
The window of a furniture store
And I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
I woke up this morning
With that cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
This suits Gotham city so well
And for a username: Darkestknight312

The lyrics are "What price freedom dirties my rug", me thinks. What say you challengers?
Marc Ribot on guitar

greatest song ever.,,, after micheal jacksons thriller of coarse
Theme song of the alcoholic.

That guitar solo sounds so much like Keith Richards that sometimes, I wonder if he's really playing instead of Marc Ribot...
Gilles Tremblay I don't want to grow up. Tom and Keith.
This has to be Gotham City in a song
well, i woke up this morning in an empty bed,... again
what does this sound like???
Funniest tom waits song
Not when it comes to the topic
@JoeSmithAu I agree.
Guitars are meant to be haphazardly stabbed.
yeehaw
Miss the point much? Huge Waits fan here, just don't need crap about "knowing pain" to justify it.
What is this?............The Prodigy??

Also appeals to hipsters and a lot of pretentious people who feel like justifying their musical taste by way of prejudice.
