    I use a -6mm chainring on a 148boost to keep the chain line more straight in the climbing gears. Chain never falls out of gear when back pedaling even over bumps.

    Also, someone explain to me...
    If the cassettes are getting WIDER with the times, further out from the bike, then WHY would the chainring need to go INWARDS in the opposite direction???
    Shouldn't the chainring position move OUTWARDS, same as the cassette? So confused... 😣

    This is extremely informative, and although I do not completley grasp the ideas and how it relates to my options in chainrings, it is appreciated. I have a zero offset Sram X01 chain ring in 32 tooth, that I like to replace with a 28 tooth. But for some reason, nobody in the aftermarket is selling zero offset. Assuming my chain line is perfectly centered in my existing cassette, would I get a 3mm or 6mm, or either, and which one would move the chain line more towards the bigger cassette cogs? Since I spin in the higher gears, and mash in the lower gears for climbing, I would want the chainline more towards the lower gear. Thanks for the video!

    Very helpful and informative video. I have a problem with the chain dropping off the largest rearsprocket with any backwards rotation of the wheel, either by turning the crank or the bike rolling backwards. It is an obvious chain line issue. Current setup is a boost 148 axle with 3mm offset. I gather from this, by swapping to the 6mm offset, I will get a better less extreme chain line. Thanks

    • @jensonusabicycles
      @jensonusabicycles  3 роки тому

      Hmmm... We're not certain we are following your question. If you're talking about using Boost adapters for your hub, this offsets your non-Boost hub to make it have a Boost equivalent chain line. This means you'd want to use a Boost chainring. We hope that helps answer your question. Cheers!

  • @andreiporto5793

    if you use a 3mm offset on a non-boost frame, does that mean there will be rubbing on the chainring? what's the worst that can happen on this config with the 3mm difference?

    • @jensonusabicycles
      @jensonusabicycles  3 роки тому

      While this won't cause any issue with your frame, it could cause poor shifting and drivetrain performance, and can cause premature wear to your drivetrain components. We'd recommend choosing the correctly offset ring.

  • @DavidDuchodca

    What the hell is boost or superboost frame? Came for one piece of info and off i go looking for another piece of info

    • @jensonusabicycles
      @jensonusabicycles  3 місяці тому

      Boost is 12x148, superboost is 12x157: it's the spacing of the hub. For instance, current Pivot frames use superboost 12x157 spacing so the rear triangle is wider at the dropouts than a boost frame.
      The offset of the chainring is determined by your frame spacing and chainline. Typically, boost is 3mm offset, superboost is 0mm offset and non-boost is 6mm offset. Look up your frame and/of hub spacing in a manufacturer chart to see which your frame is then choose the chainring offset based on that.

    • @jensonusabicycles
      @jensonusabicycles  3 роки тому

      Hello! This is totally doable and we have done it many times successfully. Remember that you are reducing the overall range of your gear, so you will want to be certain that the range of available gears covers your ascending and descending needs. Also, clutch derailleurs are a big reason why 1x drivetrains work without dropping chains. When you get rid of the front derailleur, you're chain is more prone to falling off. Narrow/Wide chainrings and clutch derailleurs were created to solve for this. You can also use a chain guide. However, once you add up the new chainring, new bolts, and chain guide, it often starts to become a better value to purchase a modern take on the 1x9 drivetrain. Box Components has done this very thing. The have a wide range cassette, 9 speed clutch derailleur and nice shifter for a solid value. You'll still need a chainring, but this will give you the best performance for the money. Give our Gear Advisor Pros a call at 951-234-7554 and they can help get you dialed with the best bang for your buck for whichever route is best for you. Cheers!

      Looking at the specs on that bike, it looks like it comes with a 10-speed setup with a 30t front chainring and an 11-46 cassette. There are a few ways to change up your drivetrain, but the easiest and cheapest is to swap to a bigger front chainring. This will reduce the low (climbing) gearing. That bike has a Prowheel C10Y-NW crank. We looked that up and it appears to have a 104mm BCD (bolt center diameter) for mounting up a new ring. We really like these Race Face chainrings due to their great performance, good price and fantastic color options. Hope that helps! www.jensonusa.com/Race-Face-104-BCD-Narrow-Wide-Chainring
