There is a UA-cam podcast called Financial Audit, the people today are scary different... It's like someone crossed this show, Jerry springer and kitchen nightmares. I'm amazed the host Caleb hasn't had a brain aneurysms.
If people wanted these type of shows nowadays, they would make them. Shows are made off of what people want to see. Unfortunately, most people would rather watch 90 Day Finance. I watch it. Love it. But I also am financially responsible and I’ve taught myself how money works. These things need to be taught at school and in the home from a young age. Also, we know have the power for unimaginable amounts of information at our fingertips and people don’t use it to learn basic financial literacy. The amount of crazy financial misinformation on the internet is also a problem. Of course, the always popular, “keeping up with the Joneses”, is always going to be a problem. Unfortunately, I only see it getting worse.

I liked this couple from the very beginning. And so did Gail. It was so obvious that they wanted the help and were willing to do whatever it took. You can see the love for each other, and I think they'll do well in life. It's probably about 15 or 16 years later as I write this, and I'll bet if we could take a peek, they're still together, still happy, have a nice family AND still have their "stuff" together. This is the kind of episode that gives other people hope, if only they would listen. I wish Gail had been around to yank me out of my problems many years ago but unfortunately I just have to live vicariously. LOL. As an old lady now in retirement, I wish I had known some of this back then. Everybody pay attention and do what you can with what you've got. Blessings from Central Florida, USA.

My hubby & I have always planned our life together - on a budget! We both had credit card debts & loans - so by the time we got married all but two of hubby's loans were paid off (the remaining two were paid off within 1 1/2 yrs) Our wedding was mostly on us - so it was definitely on a budget. Friends and family helped out with stuff like videos, photos, bouquets, dresses,... It was beautiful for us to have a day to remember and we're still together after 35 yrs!
Our household income is the same as theirs, with 4 kids. We owe on our house, one vehicle, and our fridge. We got married for under $2,000, including rings and my dress. I own one credit card that I pay off every time I use it. Credit is for necessities, not fun or food. It's how much you spend, not how much you make. I had $0 on my credit card when we got married. I owe $0 now.
Haven’t had a credit card in over 10 years. Have zero mortgage. Did buy a car and financed it and despite the fact of not having a credit report, we got financing on a $21,000 vehicle for 2.4%. They just based it on our income and the fact that we had no debt, we were approved in no time 😀 Paying extra on the principle every month to get it paid off in less than 2 years. 👍🏻 We use our debit card when we need to reserve a hotel room online. Easy peasy. Yep. Don’t miss the credit cards. But good on you to carry a zero balance. Most people do not. I think I heard recently that the average family owes $8,000 just on credit cards alone 😬

Guess what- schools already DO teach budgeting. But obviously the kids are not learning it. Why? Because it is a LIFESTYLE that must be taught, not something that can be learned by sitting down in a classroom and reading a book. But I guess that’s just too hard for parents to actually do so you want to make it the schools’ responsibility. So tell me this - what do you propose the schools STOP teaching in order to make room for the increased amount of emphasis on budgeting that you propose?
We got married in Vegas, and it was perfect for us. Budget friendly, Elvis was not invited, small group of family was there, and we got exactly what we wanted plus a week of honeymoon without taking on any debt to do it.
Wow! The first couple I've truly seen take on board and action what is being said. They genuinely seemed like they would totally get that debt paid down in one year, and re-address how their spending habits.
Watching these shows now really reveals how much inflation has changed budgets etc. $50-70 for a dinner out (in a major Canadian city) will not get you that far in a restaurant anymore.
That's a fast food type joint now in Canada. We won't even talk about what happened to our stupid housing market since then, sigh. Mind you, my income has more than doubled since these were filmed - but would still never even approach keeping up with the stupidly inflated real estate market.
I absolutely adore these two! They have such good communication, are so positive, and will truly make it far in life together. So much respect for each other and seem to look at each other as best friends, which is so important. Really rooting for them!!
The thing I noticed is that most of the families Gail is working with are making $100,000.00 to $200,000.00 a year. The US medium family income is somewhere between $56,000.00 and $64,000.00 a year, depending on in what year you are comparing.
I think because this is the magical bracket where people think that they are rich when they are not so then they overspend. I know people who are married and they're doctors and dentists, making over $300,000 a year, and they cry poverty because they are house poor and overspend on frivolous things.

They spend all their money on 2 big vacations a year, they trade in their cars every 1-2 years carrying negative equity. They eat out a lot !!! And lots of credit cards. My husband and I make less than half of what they make. Our house is 3,000 sf, no mortgage, no credit cards… 1 small car loan which I make double the principle payments on. That will be paid off in a few months. No credit cards. We pay as we go. Cook a lot from scratch at home. Plus I grow a lot of our veggies in fruit saving me tons in grocery costs 😁 Veggies AND fruit 😆
This show is also 20 years old. But it’s based in and around Toronto in Canada and the cost of living was high even then with some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Now it’s completely ridiculous but even back then it was bad. So the income seems high but it wasn’t for that area. It’s like comparing it to New York City.

As a former marriage commissioner I was always astounded at the time and money spent on the "big day" with little regard to the day after the party when the real work begins in making a successful marriage. These days when people spend years living together first, what a waste of money a big wedding is. Put the money on the mortgage or other debt. Go to Vegas kiddies.

How does this show measure the line of credit amounts? Are they listing the total line of credit available or the amount that’s actually been used from the line of credit? It’s unclear to me because the show distinguishes between loans and lines of credit. Yes a loan is different from a line of credit in the technical sense. But for the purposes of calculating debt, you only get charged for the amount of the line of credit that’s been borrowed. So for the purposes of calculating debt just becomes a loan.
You also pay for some treatment that isn’t deemed “absolutely necessary”. I needed jaw surgery (not at all cosmetic) and had to pay a portion of it out of pocket. I didn’t need it to survive, therefore not covered.
Completely depends. We have 80% coverage for dental, medical 100% and health care 100%. My husbands work pays us the remaining 20% dental so that’s technically 100% too. And we get 100% for chiro, vision and therapist. A lot of people don’t have benefits like this though.

I don’t like carrying too much cash (I’m a senior and purse snatching is a reality). At Christmas I cash in the rewards for an extra $300 or so gift money. I can’t imagine not knowing where my finances stand.

Look up the rule of 72. If you took out a 3000 loan at 18% and only pay the minimum...that loan could double in 4 years.

Completely depends. We have 80% coverage for dental, medical 100% and health care 100%. My husbands work pays us the remaining 20% dental so that’s technically 100% too. And we get 100% for chiro, vision and therapist. A lot of people don’t have benefits like this though.

People can have credit cards without getting into trouble with them. A card is a convenience, not extra income.
I'm not crazy about them, but people need a credit history for mortgages and car loans, etc. The trick is not loosing your head.
Use them responsibly. When it comes time to get a mortgage or a car loan, no one is going to lend you anything bc you don't have a credit history.
@@nanettemorton4054 I have a credit card tied to my bank account that has excellent rewards. I don’t pay it off monthly - more like weekly. I don’t like carrying too much cash (I’m a senior and purse snatching is a reality). At Christmas I cash in the rewards for an extra $300 or so gift money. I can’t imagine not knowing where my finances stand.
@@MrsEJV Exactly. I don't want to walk around with a wad of money in my pocket-especially if I'm going for groceries or going to make a big purchase. I still remember seeing a mournful advertisement in my University newspaper -- someone was carrying their tuition in cash, and lost it. (I don't think schools even take cash now.)

yes investment, in the latter shows they did start to mention this part of it but the show is about debt and not investments.

Counting 401k loans as debt is utter nonsense. A 401k loan is moving your own money around. Whether one thinks it’s a good idea or not. It’s not like an auto loan or credit card debt.
