In this video I'm showing the small scale production aspect of woodturning by making a dozen ferro rods handles.
A friend asked if I could make him a custom one and so I discovered there is quite a demand for these things in the outdoors community in my country.
So I ordered a bunch of ferrocerium rods and started making the first batch of twelve. The resulting video might be boring for most viewers but it shows some ways you can optimize mass production on the wood lathe.
Some of them will be sold locally and some will be rewards for Patreon. - Навчання та стиль
Those ferro rods came out nice--good work!
i love how each of them are different!
I busted out laughing when you sharpened those calipers and gave the thumbs up. :D
I'm pretty sure you just killed a few machinists out of pure shock.
Me too! And, the 👍
Since I am a machinist, it was at this point I shit my pants.
The super glue sealant coat is an interesting idea. But burnishing those valleys for a burned accent was genius! This was the most entertaining 12 minutes of repetition I've ever seen.
Wow, that's some damn nice work done! I didn't know you could process wood like that. Thumbs up!
Nice editing, you brought us along on everything while not killing us with repetitive-ness.
Well Done! :)
Editing was the hardest part of this whole project, so I'm really happy to see someone appreciating it! Thanks!
Nice job with the Video and ferro rods. I never thought of mounting them first and then turning them. Much better than when I parted them off, then mounted the rod.
I have been watching your videos for a short while and by far they are the best. You talent is quite diversified. Thanks a lot for doing them.
Spencer
Thank you Spencer!

I had some nice wood to choose from :D But the bog oak I decided to keep for a better project.
;-)
I just watched the entire video, and I have one question, what are these...? Regardless, entertaining video.
To make fire when camping. They create a spark when scraped with the back of your knife.
Great video"

Понятно спасибо!
Вечная зажигалка для выживателей в лесу :)
I need one
I might do a second batch in the next couple of weeks and, if there is interest, I can put some of them on ebay.
This was a great project with super results. Thanks for sharing. Do you by chance still have a link or the sellers name on ebay for the 8mm x 10cm rods? That seems the perfect size for the project but every rod I'm finding is 3" or less (seems too short), or 5" or more (seems too long). Thanks again for sharing.
Beautiful work. To bad about the one that broke.
Nice I do it all by hand perhaps I should get a lathe
Nice work, I also want to know where to buy the Ferro rods?
What did you do with the broken one? Did you try shortening down the handle or was it a goner?
what are those use for?
what did you do with the broke one? they all look great and how did it take you to do all of them?
I made another handle for it, it's the one on the right in the final picture. I can't tell exactly how long it took since I waste a lot of time filming, took me 2-3 days total. So I guess actual work was around 6-8 hours.
Tuyệt vời
is that a flint,i have learn something with this woodcraftship
Awesome work. What are Ferro Rods?
Nice work, where do you buy the bulk rods?
In wallmart xd
*how many times we can make fires or how long i can use it, if we compare this rod with simple matchbox?*
It's an interesting thought experiment to think about how you would optimize production. If you cut all the blanks the same size, then that would open up some optimizations. You could use a square collet to hold the block then drill on a lathe. Since all blocks are the same size, you could create a jig for use on the table saw that would allow you to quickly hog out some of the material on multiple pieces and make them all identical. That might help save some passes on the lathe. Probably wouldn't save much time for 12 pieces, but if you were to make hundreds or thousands the time savings would add up.
Wow thats cool, where did you get the rods, i want to make some of acrylic
I got them on ebay, just look for ferrocerium. The ones used in the video are 8 mm in diameter and 10 cm long, I find them to be the best balance between price, size and usability.
Felicidades saludos desde México 🇲🇽 me gustó pero es mucha mecha para poquita pólvora quiero decir que el mango es muy chico en porpocion al pedernal en mi umilde opinión
Hi, what is the chuck you are using? Also, what was the finish you applied?
Chuck ER20 collet on morse taper no 2 their on Ebay and super glue then bees wax
I wish I could work that fast
You could, with the magic of video editing!
A joy to watch. Do you sell them on ebay by any chance ?
Thanks, maybe I'll post some on ebay from the second batch I'll probably make in a week or two.
I would buy a few if you did. One for myself of course and the others for gifts. Great job!
What woods are you using
hi it's a very good job, but please what we can do with this tools ?
BENSALAH Mohamed they are used to create fire.
Where can I'm buy the rods from?!
...ok good job... but what are they made for??
Are you using superglue to seal the wood first? Very nice work
What kind of wax were you applying after the CA?
pure bees wax from a bee keeper
What kind of chuck is that? Where did you get it?
ER20 collet on morse taper no 2. Got it cheap on ebay.
are those magic wands?
well you can ignite fire with them so tecnically yes
you polish them with superglue???
Yes those handles are cool looking,
But they are small and not big enough for my Ferro Rods and my hands
Who worried about the cllipers
Nice vid though👍
Qual é o modelo desse torno?
Question ? c'est quoi ces tige de fer avec un manche en bois ??? merci
it's a fire starter
Silly question: what that rods are used for?
Vladek Ro they are ferocious rods which is kinda like flint and steel but I believe they can make a bigger spark. It's used to light fires with the spine of s knife or something
Where can I purchase one or more?
I'm sure folks have asked, but what kind of chuck is that?
ER collet chuck (this one is ER20 on MT2), got it cheap on ebay.
The Small Workshop
thank you!!!
Anyone know what that hollow metal rod was that he put in the hole he drilled for the rope?
brass tube, 6mm
Thanks :)
Pardon the lack of knowledge but what is those used for?
CucoGT2s Lighting a fire
Я один не знаю что это за крутые вещицы?)
Огниво для выживателей в дикой природе.
Alex Best о спасибо
Son pedernales y sirven para ser fuego 🔥
How can i get one?
Can you make me 4 larger ones with a green and orange handles?
Please reply me......what use of thas rods.......?
ravinder singh they are fire strikers in a way
I don't remember what are these
what is that ??
Ferrocerium rods, when you scrape them with the edge of a piece of metal they make some pretty hot sparks, good for lighting fires in the wild.
No entendí que artículo es ... para que sirve
But what for is it?
