In this video I'm showing the small scale production aspect of woodturning by making a dozen ferro rods handles.
A friend asked if I could make him a custom one and so I discovered there is quite a demand for these things in the outdoors community in my country.
So I ordered a bunch of ferrocerium rods and started making the first batch of twelve. The resulting video might be boring for most viewers but it shows some ways you can optimize mass production on the wood lathe.
Some of them will be sold locally and some will be rewards for Patreon.

The super glue sealant coat is an interesting idea. But burnishing those valleys for a burned accent was genius! This was the most entertaining 12 minutes of repetition I've ever seen.

Nice job with the Video and ferro rods. I never thought of mounting them first and then turning them. Much better than when I parted them off, then mounted the rod.

This was a great project with super results. Thanks for sharing. Do you by chance still have a link or the sellers name on ebay for the 8mm x 10cm rods? That seems the perfect size for the project but every rod I'm finding is 3" or less (seems too short), or 5" or more (seems too long). Thanks again for sharing.

I made another handle for it, it's the one on the right in the final picture. I can't tell exactly how long it took since I waste a lot of time filming, took me 2-3 days total. So I guess actual work was around 6-8 hours.

  • @HacknBuild

It's an interesting thought experiment to think about how you would optimize production. If you cut all the blanks the same size, then that would open up some optimizations. You could use a square collet to hold the block then drill on a lathe. Since all blocks are the same size, you could create a jig for use on the table saw that would allow you to quickly hog out some of the material on multiple pieces and make them all identical. That might help save some passes on the lathe. Probably wouldn't save much time for 12 pieces, but if you were to make hundreds or thousands the time savings would add up.
