The other way to look at Chthonian Nightmare is if you are only resurrecting 3-mana or less creatures, you don't need any other type of energy production since the Nightmare will make all you need each time you play it.

Just resurrect a Dockside that will make you at least 2 treasure and have a free sac outlet to net 1 energy and any additional treasure if 3 or more are made by Dockside each time as you loop Dockside. You can also do this with a second Dockside or a Patron of the Arts in place of the free sac outlet. Patron of the Arts makes this work in commander since it will create 2 treasures to recast Chthonian Nightmare, but requires one mana available when starting the loop unlike the 2 Dockside and the free sac outlet versions.

Play Ornithopter for 0 drop this for 2 get 3 energy pay 0 energy sac the ornithopter return to hand the nightmare and get the thopter. having commander decks that even do 2 colors, winter moon feels like it has so much potential that my playgroups are very likely to outright ban that before it even releases.
too often later into games it can be a multi turn spell, you go to take your turn later in the game and most of your opponents have nearly all their lands tapped doing whatever fun stuff they wanted, but you drop this and suddenly they go from having 7~9 mana for their turn to just a few for several turns unless they have an answer right away, if you are tapped out with non-basics and have an answer you might need to wait multiple turns to do anything, unless of course the existence of this means most fun 3, 4 or 5 color decks just get hosed from now on and people play with mostly basics to fight against this and bloodmoon like effects

After five or so turns with one mana, I see his face light up and then he casts Dark Ritual. In response, I cast Orim's Chant and his smile turned to a frown and asked "Does that mean I take three mana burn?". I nodded and tried not to rub it in, but it was pretty satisfying at the time. The game was basically over after that and I'm reminded by something Seth says, "Fun is zero sum".

I disagree with your evaluation of Chthonian Nightmare. Since it give you three energy already and returns to your hand as part of the cost, it can be used to loop the best 3 drops in the game easily in a graveyard deck. In addition the combo potential for this card is rediculous as all it takes to go infinite is 2 creatures that give you in total 4 or more mana (Priest of Gix, Priest of Urabrask, Cathodian, Burning Tree Emissary, etc., or haste enablers and things that tap for mana). I think Seth is misunderstanding the Nightmare card. Energy doesn't matter, it itself makes 3 energy. So you can just keep reanimating 3 drops for 2 mana. It's basically the best version of 2 mana "unearths" we've seen. Which could be strong enough for modern tbh. The fact that it's repeatable makes it quite scary in any Mentor shell.
Energy creatures don't create a loop because you will always need to recast Nightmare. All Virtuoso does is go from 3 to 6 energy which means the next time you cast Nightmare you can reanimate a 6 drop for 2 mana.
The only way to create a loop would be if there was a black Burning-Tree Emissary. Like Priest of Gix. You can also use a discard outlet for Nightmare + Renegade Rallier to bring back Nightmare.

If you think of it like that, then you understand that its useless to cast it for free against an opponent edict, and you have that as a floor.
You will only cast it for free if you would prefer geting edicted rather then allowing their spell to resolve.
This means that it is worse as a free counterspell compared to other free counterspell if you are trying to protect a creature from a removal spell.
