i have a ruger m77 hawkeye standard in .204. i tried to sight it in using 32 g. it was so bad i thought i was going to have to send it back to ruger. i went to 40g and was shooting dime sized groups instantly. i never had that experience before.
as a side note, i met the guy from predator quest once when he was sponsored by howa. i told him i noticed he didnt use the .204 much in favor of the 22-250 and wanted to know why. he said the howa favored the 32g bullets and he had trouble cleanly killing coyotes with it due to lack of penetration if his shot hit the shoulder area. ive never had a prob with coyotes using 40g
I have a cz 527 I’m 204. In my opinion it is the BEST varmint rifle because of how it shoots and because it is very fur friendly. If you don’t care about fur than it doesn’t really matter as long as you can hit where you aim. But my 204 shoots so good I love this thing
Did anyone else notice the primer may have blown out on the first 40gr shot? The pressure release followed by some smoke around his action and magazine indicated that.
Checked at 9:00 and it never showed that this was uploaded or playing. Checked back at 9:30 and it stated it premiered 17 minutes ago so that would have been around 9:13 Eastern time. It never notified me either. Watching it I had 3 advertisements interrupt me. Anyway, I still got to see it but did not get to chat with friends.
I have been very interested in this round -- if for no other reason than that's the ammo that's been most available at my local gun shop. Sure wouldn't mind to have that Ruger in my collection besides. Thanks for the demonstration.
Hi Who-Tee-Who, that looks like you have barrel touching at the left fore end ?? The Ruger stocks are notorious for that problem with the stock ?? You can lossen the action screws, place some paper in the barrel channel to push the fore end over a little, tighten down action screws and remove the paper ! If that clears the stock then reshoot the 40 grain units ??? I have an Riger American in 308 and I retooled the barrel channel and added 5 lbs of BB’s to the fore end and stock ! That rifle is now a pleasure to shoot with consistent sub MOA and minimal recoil !!
Done this same test with a Remington 700 all weather rifle. My lead slanger loves the 32gr. 5 shot group @ 100 yards was less than 1/2". Nikon buckmasters 4.5x14x50. Awesome setup for me. Love you videos man. Thank you
I've had really good luck with Sierra blitzing 36 grain. Got a box and a half left. Just picked up 4 boxes of hornady 40 grain. Glad to see it did well. I know this is a older video but I re-watched it because I had to pick up different ammo. 👍
I think that last one had the most wind on it. IMO it really needed one more chance like you gave the 32 grainer. Mine favors the 40 for dead-on accuracy.
Just watched and your third round of the 40 gr looks to me a bit of wind increased and probably pushed that one a bit off. great shooting WTW thanks for another great video 👍 👍👍👍👍
.204's are awesome! I used to have a savage model 10 heavy barrel 26in first gen lol, With a vortex crossfire ii 4-12x50 on it. It was a tack driver out to 350-400 yards. Unfortunately life happened and I had to let her go. But definitely a fun little round! Mine liked the 40gr best. Used to shoot 16.9oz water bottles out at 300. And the wife could take over and still smack them each time.
another fun video to watch and great shooting rifle. just a quick observation. at 5min 8sec mark, your first shot with the 40gr bullets. it looks like you had a primer blow out and or a case split. saw a lot of smoke in and near the action which shouldnt of been there in a bolt gun. i have noticed in my 204s that hornady ammo tends to be a touch hot. and i have seen it with my reloads as well. and that tends to make it very temp sensitive. saw this a lot out in south dakota where my load testing was done and clarified to be safe here in indiana spring weather and temps. went to go prairie dog hunting and we had to be absolutely certain to only have the rifle loaded right when we intended to take a shot and to be sure to keep the ammo out of the sun.
Be cool to: actually measure the wind with each shot. Shoot ten or more groups with each cartridge and take the average, max, min and Standard Deviation. Get a temperature gun and ensure that the barrel is at the same temperature at the start of each group. Measure the muzzle velocity of each shot and see how variations compare with accuracy. Also, look at the shape of each group; are they balanced or bunched, and if so, in which direction and shot count. And ideally, clean the barrel between each group. But that would take a lot of time and money.
Old video I know, but I was looking at the 243 & believed it was the fastest rifle round there is, with a fella shooting one claiming 4100fps. Then I went looking for faster ammo to see if it even exists, and I found hornady 'super performance varmint' rounds for $50 CDN @ 40gr or @32gr. The 32gr box claims 4225 fps. Is that the fastest rifle round we can get? You'd think this or the 243 would be a consideration for police snipers or military, where time to target was critical. I didn't notice if the noise these 204's make is louder due to their tripling the sound barrier (unsure if sonic crack is incremental in nature after superseding it almost four times). Love this channel, always great info for people getting caught up. The accuracy of these rounds, and their velocity, puts them in a class almost on their own. Suppose a .243 would be suitable for larger game, but a tack-driver firing a 32gr bullet going > 4k fps is pretty impressive.
My 6.5 Creedmoore only really groups well with Hornady American whitetail 125 grain, fiochhi tends to be shocking and Sako leaves a 1.5-2in group then the hornady is about 0.5-1in group
I've had my Savage arms 26' heavy barrel 204 for dont know how long ,but haven't missed my foxes with it . super accurate, and mostly use 32 grain and will never get rid of it.
You have to sight in on cold barrel but that depends on your rifle some shot good hot or cold, the thing is when your hunting your first shot is from a cold barrel. It seems that it effects larger caliber more than small calibers. Hell what do I know I'm a pistol shooter anyway
Sounded like the wind was blowing. Definitely can affect a light bullet. May have blown the last shot on the 40g off. It looks to me like both shoot very very well!
👍as always, as Mr Dan Feigt asked, at 5:09 a nice amount of smoke was puffing out from magazine/magazine well, any idea WTF caused it. 🤔. The gun, ammo, scope, rest, the shooter just a nice combo.🤠💥💥💥💥
I would give it one click to the right. The difference between the two is only 8 grains. This is not a significant amount. Here in NZ we really haven't had an ammo shortage but we are now seeing horrific price increases. .303 Brit. has gone from $2 per round to $5. for the cheap stuff.
I would like to see if a grape will burst a .204 bullet. Place the grape to the front with a gap of perhaps 12 inches to a white paper card to catch any bullet fragments. That Ruger .204 is amazing. Good shooting!
Your Ruger American in.204Ruger Is a tack driver. Very impressive. I just picked up a new Bergara B14 Ridge rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. Put a Crimson Trace 6-24x56 scope on it and I’m ready for a little sighting in.
Firing an Anschutz in 22 WMR kinda spoiled me, on them. Definitely cheaper ammo , but I guess those are " a little" more expensive .LOL. A Savage/Anschutz seems to price about like the Ruger/Ruger 204, maybe even a little cheaper. Lot of guns out of stock now,
I know in New Zealand the 204 is a popular round they use for deer if it is legal to use in your area for whitetail deer would you be willing to do a hunting video with the 204 👍
I have an H&R handI rifle with a heavy barrel in ..204 Ruger and it shoots single hole groups in both 32 & 40 grain loads. I like the speed of the 32 gr, but they can be tricky in a cross wind...
@bigben9379 try a LOT flatter shooting. Hornady 53 gr vmax shows almost 45 inch drop at 500 yds on their superformance ammo box. The 204 32 gr and 40 gr show 29 inches and 28 inches respectively with vmax superformance ammo. That's not a little but flatter, that's 1 1/2 FEET!
Did you notice anything off with the brass from the first round of 40gr you shot? There was smoke coming out of the mag well and action, and it didn't do that on any of the other shots. Loved the vid as always!
Bought about 3 years ago a Ruger model 77 Mark II in this Ruger .204. I believe it has a 22" blued barrel with a nice wood stock. Will be shooting it come this August. Do you or anyone here have any experience with this model. All I have in stock is about 100 rounds of the Hornady 32gr. Super Performance. Thanks, new subscriber..
Yano i have been trying to decide on which type of rifle chambered in 204 i want to buy? I have checked out the Savage 110 Predator and this one so far. Now i love most Savage rifles and even own an Axis I in 6.5CM and a few in 30/06 and a .308Win, but that gets a bit costly to plink with. I only use that for compeition shooting. But with all i hear about how cheap 204 is and that its a good flat shooter out to 3 or 400 yards i wanted to get one for both plinking and maybe some competitions? But now your saying that the prices are up on the rounds now? huh Now i love Ruger firearms as well but with the Ruger American ,its one of the bottom basement choices, by Ruger but even their low cost firearms ,they are great guns!. The one thing im curious about is how long the barrel is on that? Most of the good numbers i hear about the 204, are out of a 26" barrel? What is yours?? P.S. i really love that tacticool look of the extended mag and rail on top! hehe
These will be devastating on Yotes. Thanks! And if you're thinking of using your 7.62x39 bolt gun on Hogs, whitetail and can't find typical hunting ammo. I have a supply of 123 grain HP, you could test with our friend Clay and see if expansion or not? No worries 👍
is that one of them Caldwell sleds your using? I made the mistake of buying one of those, red plastic MCM Predator shooting rest. It dose NOT have a nice cradle for the butt stock for the rifle ,being used! LOL But its a good rest for what it is! I am in the process of building a few ARs as well as building one bolt gun and restoring a few older Milsurp guns. So i think i need a rest that can lock the rifle into it so i can fire it from a far? LOL just in case if you know what i mean? In any case i would love to hear about how this rifle works in the field vs bench shooting? thanks P.S. you sure you didnt pull that 1st shot in the 40gr rounds? lol the rest all looked good other then the 1st shot with a cold barrel hehe but even that 1st shot would have done the trick on any predator! lol
That is the one thing that’s always kept me from buying a 204….the ammo cost. I know I’d just love shooting it and wouldn’t be able to afford to much. If I bought a 223 I could shoot it all I wanted. But I always wanted a 204 Ruger in a Ruger rifle. Specifically the M77 Hawkeye which is the classic walnut stock rifle. A beautiful rifle!! But they are 1000 bucks now and then still gotta buy an optic…plus ammo cost 😮. I just can’t seem to make myself do it 🤦♂️. I got the money but jeez
I am so annoyed living in Germany and have such trouble with our restrictive laws. It's nearly impossible to get guns without problems. Carry them gets you really fast into jail. You MUST be hunter or sporting shooter and it is so hard and expensive to get a license... 😒
Very nice shooting gun. I just sighted in my 300 blackout. I'm getting myself in trouble watching your video's. I want to keep buying guns I don't have but now want. Hence having to sight in the 300 blackout.

The wind gotcha on that last 40 grain shot.

.223 typically shoots heavier bullets with more energy down range . 204 shoots a bit flatter.

But they are 1000 bucks now and then still gotta buy an optic…plus ammo cost 😮. I just can’t seem to make myself do it 🤦♂️. I got the money but jeez
Wondering why you are using such high mounts, looks like you could have used some different mounts to keep scope tighter to barrel
Never shot a 204. I like the 243. For small game I use a 80 grain for deer I like a 95, or a 100 grain out to about 300 yds,,,

I am so annoyed living in Germany and have such trouble with our restrictive laws. It's nearly impossible to get guns without problems. Carry them gets you really fast into jail. You MUST be hunter or sporting shooter and it is so hard and expensive to get a license... 😒
Good shooten. I will be getting a Predator as soon as this craziness settle down. If this craziness settles down.
Very nice shooting gun. I just sighted in my 300 blackout. I'm getting myself in trouble watching your video's. I want to keep buying guns I don't have but now want. Hence having to sight in the 300 blackout.
