Just went for the week. I still get emotional when I see scorched foundations that still dot the landscape close to downtown. That said, as creepy as this drive looked, I remember the amazement of the firefighters efforts and the beauty of "the strip" when the news showed it still intact.
We went here a few days after the town was re-opened. It was almost completely deserted! Friends from out of state wanted us to take photos of the destruction & send them so they could see it! We couldn't do it! It was that sad and depressing! I just could not take photos of someone's horrible loss & pass it around! I'm happy that Gatlinburg is coming back, better! But now the lawsuits are also coming! The two that set these fires should have to pay! Someone has to know who these two are! They aren't miners any more!
I remember going into a restaurant as a kid, and old photos hung on the wall of the same restaurant - almost fully submerged and totally destroyed by a flood. There's something inspirational about having those photos to commemorate the strength of rebuilding, the persistence of the human spirit. It sent a positive message.
Got a question are most of the trees burned down or not? It's such a shame that the fire happened this is our family's favorite place to go during the summer
No, it's just at the bases of some trees. When spring and summer hit, I'm sure there will be little left to remind us of the fire (nature wise), as the new growth will cover it. A lot of the bark will be blackened for years to come, but the trees will thrive and flourish.
Did anyone else notice that two of the signs say Smokey in them? One said, I think, Smokey in and the other one said smokyland Motel. Every five to ten years we have serious wildfires out here in California. If you want to live in a place with trees and brush you need to create fire breaks. Big fire breaks are expensive to maintain. Therefore, typically they are not maintained. Large destructive fires like this are not natural disasters but rather the result of inaction by people.
Literally just back from being there for my son's soccer tournament. Even more horrifying now that I kinda know the are a bit. It's coming back. Slowly but surely.
I saw on their FB page that they posted a photo from the front of it and it looked intact from the front, But they haven't had a chance to check it for themselves.
SpiritsoftheWolf Ah. Yeah, They're only letting Rescue, Fire and Police crews in to Gatlinburg so it's pretty much impossible to tell what's still there and what's gone.

God has spoken to the area of Gatlinburg noting "Ye shall repent your wicked ways". God is not pleased with overly gaudy, commercialization of his land noted herein of this video. Repent ye sinners - for the wages of sin are upon ye! Return the land to the native peoples. -Have a nice day, ye-all, ye-all come back, ye-hear! :)
Creepy seeing Gatlinburg with no traffic or people.

Kind of weird hearing every fire alarm nearby going off.
My home away from home I spent most of my childhood in Gatlinburg not living there but spent my time there. I live only 40 minutes away.
glad you made it out. those are some insane few videos you have.

Jewish Audio by Ken It says Smoky because those are the Smoky Mountains.
The name Smoky seems to be particularly apt during and immediately after the recent fires.
You must be the only person in town. With no one to silence all those fire alarms
glad to see u made it past the nut in the stopped car. in hopes you folks are doing ok....
=dok=

Every birthday until the tenth one was there and it's just sad to see it burn down
It'll thrive again. Sure, it took a hit, but it'll bounce back.
@@jongaddis5821 Correct. Went there a couple years ago and it was lively like the fire never happened!! I'll never forget it though.
hell there aint no one there good time to go but why aint there no one there ?
There's no one there because they evacuated Gatlinburg because of the wildfires. Lots of homes and businesses have already been destroyed.

I totally agree. Sadly, many folks don't even get out into the mountains when they head down to Gatlinburg.

God doesn't know about Gatlinburg.
God didn't create Tennessee.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful, but Gatlinburg town is rather nasty; full of crass commercialism.
