I became very aware of Peter when I was a student in the 50s, living for awhile in Toronto and after moving to Sudbury as grad, visiting weekends to the Plaza Room where Peter was resident Vibe Man with The Cal Jackson Quartet. Then, in later years met up with him again at the "Festival of the Sound" in Parry Sound. He gave a little pre-concert talk and he signed my vinyl LP along with a little sketch of himself on the vibes. Such a generous, vibrant, talented man; a treasure forever.
He performed in Columbus, Ohio a few years back with the jazz orchestra. It was honestly the most amazing thing I've ever seen. At the end of the show they went into a good 20 - 30 minute jam session where Appleyard played every single instrument in the band. I've never seen anything like it. This talent will be sorely missed.
Very nice performance! Let's give credit to the other great players, too. John Sherwood on piano; Lorne Lofsky, guitar; Neil Swainson on bass; Terry Clarke played drums. World class players, all.
This man has been around forever and still plays like a young man! As a kid, I remember my father, who was a jazz vibe player, listening and studying...yes studying Pater Appleyard's "feel & technique" so as to emulate him. Thanks for the post. You brought back some fond memories!
What an unbelievably talented prodigy Peter Appleyard was. I will forever love Bob Homme, aka The Friendly Giant, for introducing me to Peter Appleyard's music as a small child on his show....
The best. So much musical pleasure he gave me and so many others. My Mom gets to pick his brains now.. Lucky her. Not so lucky for him. lol RIP Peter. :)
Slam Stewart is the bassist. He played with Benny Goodman at the famous Carnegie Hall concert, His final years were in Binghamton, NY where he played with local jazz musicians. I think he was married to a woman from this area.
Thank you CBC. This is what you call sweet music from a band that knows how to play it.

RIP. Your talent and music will never be forgotten.

He rehearsed every day right up til he no longer could. A true professional

Not just Peter Appleyard, but the other players were really groovin.....
These are true professional who simply love music!!

I have a vinyl LP of his from the 50's, and I'm gonna get it on the turntable pronto.
Awesome bassist !
Such a great interplay between all the seasoned musicians.
Fantastic talent, a real loss to the Jazz community, but grateful for the rich history he left behind. Cheers Mr. Appleyard!

First heard him at the Cheslea Bun in the 1980's and became hooked!
I also saw him at Quotes with the Canadian Jazz Quartet and on Sunday afternoon on CBC TV from Brunswick House with Peter Appleyard in 1977.
I love vibes in beautiful music. Peter should could play them.
Great combo. All talented musicians make it look easy. Top drawer. Similar treatment of Tangerine on his live 'Barbados Cool' album from 1991.
Awesome!
My dad said he was one of the best out there, never got his props but those who knew him regarded him highly.
So sad he's gone!
Seems a very humble man, how many big names like him can just sit there out of the spot light like that?
Another "Fab session ! - with a house hold named ( jazz master ). Cheers to you all .
It's hard to think that he's not with us anymore :(
6:23 omg
4:53 omg
Lindo mesmo !!!!!
Peter Appleyard still has a wonderful sense of notes...what an enjoyable player. Unfortunately Tangerine does not appear to be on the new album (?)
Tears
Somebody put a thumb down on this? WTF!!!
Is that Jim Wales on drums?
I am Jimmy Coxson's daughter...miss them all, not my pic but my sons lol
What is the bassist's name ? Very clear and grooving solo. And the others too.

Bassist is Neil Swainson.
I wonder if he ever tried a steel pan. I think he would have been a great double tenor player.
We just lost an Original....
