  • Movement 1: Allegro moderato (Part I)
The late Russian master Mstislav Rostropovich - one of the greatest cellists of all time - and English composer and pianist Benjamin Britten join forces in 1968 to play the exquisite Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821, by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Schubert composed the work for the arpeggione, a now-defunct instrument with six strings and frets (like a guitar) that was bowed like a viola da gamba. Nowadays, the work is most commonly played on the cello.

The opening mood set by Britten and then answered by Rostropovich is one of the most beautiful things ever recorded.

One of the most exquisite pieces of music ever played by two geniuses in their fields. With regards to the opening of the Sonata, Rostropovich told his daughter to imagine a still quiet day, with rain coming down - and hearing no other sound than the 'plop plop' of the drops on to the earth. That is such a perfect thing to be seeing in your mind as the piece opens and Brittan's piano becomes melded with Rostropovich's cello. Utter perfection.

What amaze me as much as Rostropovich, is Benjamin Britten. They make each other doing the best out of them self. Most will see this as a cello solo. They make each other stand out, as soloist both. Its just amazing. Must have been great for both of them. To feel like "one" Like a team

This is what happens when Rostropvich and Britten meets Schubert - natural musicality and warmth. Refined and vigorous. Marvelous.

The best! Perfect tempo! Seems others play so fast, trying to impress with technique, that they loose the depth and breath of such a delicate and passionate piece of art.

Very impressive, I had no idea that Britten was such an accomplished pianist, what great interpretations of the the piano introduction and solo passages. He takes his time, which is something that is all to hard to do while under the pressure of a performance.
I also like Rostropovich's performance. His dynamics are amazing!

Terrific performance! Arpeegione is tough. It wasn't written for a cello. I'm a cellist but Rosropovich was a cello genius, and a mircle. Just a little story, he was that good.
A pal came back from a job at a sound stuidio in Moscow to find the Dvorak B Minor being played as he arrived; but just the cello and and a piano accompianist.
The wonderful thing is the roles were reversed. The pianist was playing the cello, and Rostropovich had the piano; both laughing like school kids.

Wonderful piece of music and the sound of Rostro's cello.... is something else!
I highly recommend the version with Andreas Schiff and a wonderful Hungarian cellist. There you can actually see them playing (with eyes closed from beginning to end).

I have many versions of this sonata and this one with Rostropovich and Britten is by far and away the very best. Originally released on the London Records label on LP it can now be found on CD. If you are looking for Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata D.821 this is the only one to look for

Since this work was conceived for the arpeggione, it is notoriously difficult to perform on the cello.
    Rostropovich remembered:
"I had never played Schubert's Sonata before and set out to learn it rather late - in Aldeburgh, just a few days before the concert. Some of the difficult spots tripped me up in rehearsal. Britten, of course, noticed them immediately... He placed such a fine piano cradle under the cello part that I was able to play all the notes that were there without panicking."

I used to find this piece a technical minefield. Then I found an edition that transcribed some parts down an octave and it's no problem now lol.

As much as I like this interpretation, I may like Perenyi and Schiff's even a little more, maybe because it was the first I heard, but this is a great interpretation for sure. Gabe Meruelo.

  • @musicspotAT

I´m impressed, very impressed, but not convinced that this is "the perfect" interpretation ... I think it is very subjective and spontaneous .... but the changes in tempo are not (nowhere) indicated in the score ... it´s moderato but nevertheless Allegro - sure you can do it like this - and I certainly like, but I doubt that Schubert intended it like this. (I admit we cannot know ...)
Very enjoyful listening for one time, but not every day - and not suitable as "only" recording of this piece.
