How To Sharpen Sheep Shears (And The Trick To Using Them Successfully)

  • We shear all our sheep every year - but we are no experts, so this is not a sheep-shearing video. Plenty of other people have put up better videos than we could. But we thought this one might be a helpful to some, because sharpening any edged tool is important and sheep shears are different to most.
    Thanks to Maisy for modeling!

Recently visited another Western Ireland farm - it was so awesome! Thanks for the clear instructions…we have almost no one here that uses hand shears so learning the hard way.

Thanks! I acquired? two pairs of those shears & sharpened them with a diamond hone as well as I could. Now I see a preferred method...!

Thanks for the really clear and helpful video. I've been shearing our one huge and sometimes stroppy pet sheep for the last four or five years with a pair of hand shears. I've never managed to get the shears really sharp beforehand, so it has always been a bit of a trial for both of us. Yesterday, after watching your video and sharpening the shears properly, it was entirely without trauma! Thanks again from me and Louie the lamb.

Well he may know how to sharpen hand shears, but he doesn't know how to shear with them. Made me shudder just watching pulling the wool up with one hand, that hand should be keeping the skin tight to prevent cutting the ewe

I tried a cheap pair of new grass shears today. They were actually shockingly good!
I guess they may not last long but given we only have a couple of sheap, that's fine

Don't clip sheep while pulling on th wool! This will pull the skin up and you'll cut your sheep,

I love how different your sheep look to mine! :) Maisie is adorable, and such good wool! Icelandic wool is very course.
This time of year, we don't have any sheep at home. We let them all free to roam the highlands where they eat mountain herbs like thyme and rosemary. Then in the autumn we go out and just.. find them. They tend to stay close enough to home.

Dagbjört Guðjónsdóttir Interesting. Yes, that sounds like the way the mountain sheep are kept near here. Ours would starve in a week! They come into their shed when it rains. they're easy to catch though - just walk into the field and they try to knock you over : - )

Dagbjört Guðjónsdóttir self-seasoning sheep? ... sorry, just kidding. That's pretty cool that they'll just take care of themselves for the most part.

Just sheared 4 sheep today with china bought electric shears - took four hours -hate this job. I bought a pair of hand shears first and they worked for ten minutes before I ram-stammed (excuse the pun) into sharpening. This video confirms i did it wrong and might go and get me another pair. Superb. thanks guys.

Hi Sandra and Tim! II just love watching your channel and day-dreaming about keeping horses, bees, a large garden and sheep for myself someday. What do you do with the wool from your sheep? I am fascinated by spinning. Perhaps you could invent a little spinning wheel, Tim? If it could shear the sheep, clean the wool, and spin the wool at once that would be grand. Hehe. Keep the videos coming-can't wait for the next! -Amanda from the states.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  8 років тому

+Amanda Shih Thanks Amanda! The wool we get really isn't good enough for spinning - our sheep are the wrong breed for that. But we use the wool as a mulch and for the dogs' baskets, so it's still useful

Lordy....yes. But this is not something you want to even think of doing. Technique is basically the same but it literally is absolute terror on your hand and takes forever should you happen to be dealing with sheep whose fleece is even the tiniest bit 'dirty'. Bee there done that, have the recurring nightmares to prove it.

Just be careful pulling on the wool you are cutting if you are doing a close cut …because you are also pulling the skin up , try instead to stretch the skin out :)
