  • Harlaxton House, an historic house from 1870 has been sitting idle and neglected for nearly 40 years. Despite various do-good ideas and plans, nothing has eventuated and the Toowoomba Regional Council seems okay to let things be that way. Why allow such a beautiful and important old house fall into decay when it could be brought back to life?

I have been watching this house for years. I am glad you shared this. Surely it can be looked after. It is magnificent!

My mother’s family lived there briefly in the 1940s, when it was divided up internally into separate lodgings. As children they played in the stables and outbuildings.

The QLD government have rarely been interested in preserving our history. I remember the Joe Bjelke-Petersen era, where anything of cultural significance was fair game for demolition. If Toowoomba Council ever have this beautiful historical house up for auction, I will be placing a bid. Thank you for making us aware of this.

It has recently been sold to someone who I’m sure will restore it beautifully. Thank goodness.

As a child we drove past this to go to school, I remember seeing old people who lived there, sitting on the verandah each morning. I’ve always been fascinated by this house and very sad to see it’s decline. I did get to see inside it when the owners auctioned off all the original furniture and antiques (possibly early 90’s?). In the dining room there was a massive oval mahogany table that had a separate stand for all the table inserts to extend the table to full length. It was amazing! I truly hope this can be restored and used - like Glengallen Homestead.

A good book to read for the early history of Harlaxton House is Katie Hume on the Darling Downs: A Colonial Marriage 1866-1871.

Council has no power to do anything. The quarry opposite owns it and the cracks in the wall are from the explosions at the quarry. Every time the quarry makes a blast the whole house shakes and as such is unstable and it's not worth restoring the house until the quarry closes. I was under the impression that the quarry had closed but not entirely sure.
Apparently Harlaxton house is the home of the Lamington, as it was supposedly first made here. Lord Lamington was coming for an unannounced visit and all the kitchen had in the larder were the ingredients to make a Lamington, and so the cook made a sponge cake, dipped it in chocolate then rolled it in coconut and named it after the Governor of Queensland, or so the story goes. I always think it would make a great museum and cafe serving Lamingtons and advertised as Harlaxton House, The Home of The Lamington.

Have to agree with you Rob, its sad to see such a piece of history going to ruin like that, someone needs to step up and do something about it.

It's so devastating seeing old buildings going to ruin. It's partly the fault of the red tape government makes people go through to fix these heritage buildings. They would rather let them slowly decay away. It breaks my heart

I've heard it was move to that location. Like a few buildings in Toowoomba🤷‍♂️. Maybe it was to scare us metal/history detectorists away. New subscriber enjoying the short films and history. Just moved out of Toowoomba a few months ago. 👍

I believe you should contact the University of Evansville who I think owns it. Maybe you could petition to have it restored and put on the tourist trail.

You could turn it into a restaurant with a small art gallery attached to it like 'Yestergrange' at Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains in NSW.

Walked around this house a few weeks back for the first time, despite being a Toowoomba resident since birth, i had never really explored that small section of Harlaxton up past the quarry towards Mt Lofty ... so many beautiful spots to explore there, from Harlaxton house, to Alex Horn dog park, and many old trails running down the range... I love Toowoomba

I drive past this house, most days. I am sad to say and at the time quite angered to see it was vandalized even more. Some twits painted over the front of the house. It would make a great restaurant. I would like to know the mason who built it.

Pity about the quarry and rifle-range nearby.
Allegedly the humble lamington was created here...

It is heratige listed as is the Queensland Governor's old 19th c house. Including the Toowoomba regional council, no-one want to go through the amount of red tape and the H U G E cost of putting it back the way it was origionally when it was first built.

My dad lived over the back for a few years. I was late teens. The quarry owned it then. We would sneak in to the house and have a look around sometimes. Normally get a quarry ute come an tell us to get lost tho. The inside is fairly well ruined.
