Growing up surrounded by cornfields with no graffiti scene, I somehow became enthralled by graffiti. I stumbled upon the hip hop magazine The Source. Chino ran a page called Graff Flix. I would rip out every page from the book store, and collect them. That was my window into the graffiti world. In the mid nineties I wrote to Chino at The Source and he sent me back a letter with a Xylene catalog (old heads will know) with recommendations from Chino. He told me to order Style Wars. He didn’t have to do that but it was cool as hell that he did. I still have that letter from him.
THIS IS HANDS FUCKING DOWN!! THE MOST!!! IN DEPTH DESCRIPTION OF GOLDEN ERA NYC GRAFF EVERRRR TOLD.. THANK YOU GOD FOR HAVING THIS MAN FULLLLY TELL THE REALLL STORY OF THIS ERA HOLY SHIT!! 🙏👏🙏
I remember one night in 1987 Chino and 6 other dudes rolled up on me and my boy Rack KRT while we were writing . Chino was eith Tekay who is another 6 foot 5 dude like Chino Suey , Dole , Dash and a couple of other dudes. They thought I was my friend Dock KRT who had beef with BYI at the time . The Razors ,the Pipes and other arms came out but when Chino saw that I wasn't Dock he calmed his crew down from jumping me. . I was like 15 and Chino and them were grown men .at the time . Things got squashed and I give Chino credit for not just jumping and beating down a kid because he wrote with another guy he had a beef with so I Respect Chino for that. The Skeleton keys that the Housing projects lick closet have could be scraped down to use to open the subway doors back then.
dope interview much respect to Chino he comes across as super humble and his stories were mad insightful. I remember copping those source mags to study the new york legends cos our only other point of reference back then was subway and spraycan art.
this is so good. missing Z! and his insights! but love this one Angel, you're always great too! Chino is such a great listener and has such great stories, keep these up!
I love Chino, he is the Grafitti ambassador. he's done a lot of educating people about the history of graffiti. I grew up like him. boricua in the projects, with love at home. it starts at home. our decision to do Grafitti was just on us. beebee avenue to Astoria blvd double RR layups were the best. I grew up in Astoria projects, trust me I know.
Great episode, I'm from the 1980"s Nyc subway graffiti era also , so it was nice to listen to Chino who I know since those days in the 1980s when we were hitting the trains , he definitely explains the era perfectly to the everyone who weren't there to live it , ,, this is a cool show ,keep them coming guys LUE 1, AOW , NYC 1980"s Graffiti writer/artist .. Peace✌ and God bless
Really intelligent, interesting dude to listen to. Hard to imagine him two-piecing RD with a biscuit, but then again, he probably doesn't suffering fools gladly.
PS. There's dudes in Philly born 68-78 still BOMBING and I love that shit. I love there's electricians in the union making $60k a year with wife and teenage children and then they go bombing. I like that shit a lot. Writers that been going hard in the last decade are 30-50 years old
Omg I have horrible memories of goons in the hood back In the day putting their feet up to yours to see if you were their size to jack you for your kicks. You dying inside hoping that they’re not the right size, and then some guys will like, I’ll still squeeze in to that. even to the point where they’re trying it on and then they’re like no it doesn’t fit me they throw it back to you. You’re so happy you got to keep ‘em for another day. 🤣🤣
I still feel the man on being called out by quoit on quoit higer education civilians. And hanging up nametag at my work ready to beat the breaks off the old head in the RR . But still i feel like showing up and showing out still comes into that factor later in life
RIP to the Nyc he grew up in. No joke. I'm Philly and my cousins from NYC. And it's the same here. RIP to the city I grew up in too. Now everything is either for yuppie/hipsters or low income families in public housing. Everyone in the middle Black White and Hispanic got or getting pushed out to the burbs or other states
I can listen to Chino tell stories forever. He is a graffiti legend, historian, king, and an even better human. Salute David.
