How funny! We just switched all our kids TO Math-U-See! We are loving it so far. I used to teach middle school and can see with my kids how the curriculum is building step by step. I may do a video on it soon 😂 different programs for different kids! Good luck this year! ❤
In our experience, we have had some of our kids use Math U See (MUS) in a private school setting, and these children finished Algebra 1 in 8th grade, going into Honors Geometry at the public high school (in WA) in 9th grade. They both did fine. One was an A student in math and the other one was a B student. They both completed Algebra 2 in 10th grade, as well as a statistics course at the community college in Running Start (our form of dual enrollment) in 11th/12th grade. One daughter also finished pre-calculus in Running Start at the college in 12th grade with a perfect grade. She didn't need any further math for her nursing degree, so she stopped there. There was another student at the same private grade school who completed geometry in MUS in 8th grade and went straight into public school Honors Algebra 2 in 9th grade. She ended up graduating valedictorian at the high school and earned a bachelor's from the University of Washington with a minor in math. I have not used MUS beyond Algebra 1, but in our experience the arithmetic levels of this curriculum lay an excellent foundation for higher level math.
I took Math-U-See from pre algebra up in the early 2000s. After I started Math-U-See it became my favorite subject in school. When I took a math class in collage my math professor pulled me aside after class one day and asked me what my major was and went on to tell me that I was very good at math. Obviously one curriculum isn’t for everyone but I loved it. I plan on using Math-U-See with my kids once they are in school.
Thank you SOOO much for this video!! Well explained and I had no idea about this curriculum. I've been struggling this year trying to find a math curriculum for my kiddos. I'm excited to try this.
We started CTC in January and so far both of my children prefer it over the others we have used. My son HATED math-u-see. My daughter loved the good and beautiful but I hated it because it took an hour or more for her to complete it (she is a slow worker but the games added to the length and she refused to skip them😅) My son just tolerated TGATB. But they BOTH want to do math with CTC. They'll even do 2 or 3 lessons a day. I'm so glad we found it.
I think I am going to try a free trial of this curriculum- math has been the most challenging part of homeschooling for me, I just don’t love any of the curriculums I’ve tried. And neither do my kids!
CTC doesn’t let you navigate their site unless you start a free trial. Not interested in a company who won’t let you see their products. I don’t need bombarded with emails from companies either.
Hmmm, I didn't think it was hard to navigate their site at all. In the "how it works" tab on their site, they have a video with an sample lesson so you can see what the videos will be like. They also have pictures of what the rest of the components look like, like worksheets and the reports you will get.
I will also add- I personally feel like the WTM has a conflict of interest over MUS now that she’s publishing Math With Confidence, which is the other math program I use with MUS. Just my opinion, but I sort of fall bunk on what they told you.
They recommend multiple curriculum options- not just their own products- so I don’t believe they would stop recommending something because it competes with what they sell. They have an entire language arts program but also recommend other curriculum options.
Honest question. My kids love using Zearn and I have seen them grow in their understanding and confidence. I have wondered about switching over to CTC, but haven't made the switch due to cost and comfort. Has anyone used both and could recommend one over the other?
I can understand you being confused. I’ll explain: When I first heard the term “unschooling” back when my first child was around 3 years old, I was given a book called “teach your own” by John Holt. John Holt coined that term. He was a former school teacher who saw firsthand that the school system doesn’t always work for kids. He wrote many books about his alternative ideas to traditional school, like giving kids tools and opportunities to learn in a more meaningful, natural way. I liked his perspective and ideas in that first book, and went on to read most of his books. I also interviewed Pat Farenga who worked for John Holt when he was still alive and has since taken over the Growing Without Schooling company. In that interview, I asked Pat specifically why John called his alternative to traditional school “unschooling” because too many people hear that term and think parents choose to not send their kids to school, keep their kids at home, and don’t try to teach them anything in any way. Pat debunked that. His quote from that interview that I share all the time is, “Unschooling means learning that doesn’t take place in school or look like learning in school. That’s it.” I’ve been an unschooler because I chose to homeschool my kids- educating them at home- with alternatives to how traditional school teaches. That means I have used curriculum and I have also used real books, hands-on activities, real-life experiences, and conversations with my kids. I’ve used it all. The problem that has come up is people who have seen videos on tiktok where there are mothers claiming to unschool their kids who- it seems- are not teaching their kids at all. I’m not on TikTok and I haven’t seen these videos, but if they are real, these people are misusing the term. Unschooling was never supposed to mean child neglect. I’ve tried helping people understand what it truly is and how to do it but I’m weary of defending it and trying to re-explain it to people who watch my videos and still don’t get it. I’m weary of the misinformed comments. I’ve decided to go forward with my channel with content that shares my favorite resources for homeschooling, motherhood, and lifestyle. I will still support other moms do this homeschooling/parenting thing. I’m still the same person; I just won’t teach about or use the term “unschooling” anymore. I hope all of this makes sense.

I’m so glad those kids had a great experience!
I just found your channel, and I'm so grateful you are giving this information to the world!

Excellent video , perfect timing ! Please keep making more videos ! Love them
Thank you!

I'm so glad to hear that!
I appreciate where you are coming from.
I love MUS, but I also supplement it. I would never use it in isolation.

Is Math U See common core? And what is CTC online. I am a first time homeschooler of my ASD child, and plan to bring my older child home next.

Is it common core?
So u think it is good for a ASD child with special needs? Can learn but on a slower based.
Even though I don’t homeschool. I have read a lot of reviews for CTC. No it is not common core. The creator of the program is Australian.
I'm confused...do you not do unschooling?
Yea that’s the impression I got too
