Linda Ronstadt inadvertently had a massive impact on music history. In 1971, she found herself in need of two people for her back-up band. So, she temporarily hired Don Henley and Glenn Frey. While they already knew each other, it was while playing for Ronstadt that they discovered how well they worked together. And thus, the Eagles were born.
Undoubtedly one of the best singers ever. So many hits arranged and performed to perfection. So proud to claim her as one of the greatest of our generation. ❤🎉
One of the best singers for sure. But what I think she is absolutely the best at is emoting, portraying and pouring forth emotion through her music. With every song you FEEL the emotion.
I was raised by country music loving parents, and wasn't able to sneak in some rock until I visited my friend from kindergarten, and his sister had the record player on. When I entered, I though I was hearing some sort of magic, but it was The Eagles, Hotel California. I saved my allowance ($0.50/week)and bought a little transistor radio a month later. The first song I heard on that radio, and the first rock and roll that I picked on my own, was this song. I have loved this since it came out in 1977.
Linda was my first album cover crush, then hearing her voice just made me fall in love with her even more. With all due respect to Roy (thanks for writing it), Linda has made this song all hers. One of my fondest memories is when my sister was a toddler, she stood on my grandfather's shoes and danced with him to this song.
Thank you so much for these Linda videos! I've started my own LR tribute band in Canada, and breaking down the mechanics of exactly what her voice is doing is so helpful.
Linda Ronstadt was one of the best singers of all time. It was so sad to hear she lost her voice, but, I am glad we can still enjoy the many recordings she made.
This song is very nostalgic for me because I remember it from my favorite childhood TV program: The Muppet Show. She performed it with a bunch of muppet frogs, in a set made to look like a swamp. It's adorable & it's on UA-cam if anyone wants to watch it. I wasn't a teen yet, but I picture that Muppet Show scene whenever I hear this song. I learned a lot of songs as a kid, just from the Muppet Show (for example: Gladys Knight's "Heard it Through the Grapevine" & Elton John's "Crocodile Rock"--and yes both also had muppets singing with them 🤣)
Do you remember Loretta Lynn singing "One's on the way" with a bunch of Muppet babies? Or Harry Belafonte singing "the banana boat song?" I loved The Muppet Show! My favorite skit had to be "Pigs in Space"😂😂😂
I have no idea what song I would want to hear, but I would have loved to hear a duet with Linda Ronstadt and Floor Jansen. Two of the most versatile beautiful voices!
Blue Bayou was released by Linda Ronstadt on the day I was born, so this has always been "my" song. I felt such attachment to and even had a crush on Linda in my childhood. Still a glorious voice 45 years later.
More nostalgia points are scored when: mom and dad used to play this song (and the whole album) on the 8-track tape player in the car and sang along with it on during our vacation trips.
Beth, I think you know by now how much I love Linda. I agree with those who think she is the GOAT. I loved your reaction and analysis. You’re right about the nostalgia. I grew up listening to Linda so her music is that much dearer to my heart. ❤️
Effortlessl, efficient and so delicately delivered. Linda was a master of her craft. Loved this reaction Beth. Just catching up on your historical yummy efforts. Well done.
What a great reaction, breakdown and analysis to a great performance of what was already a great song, but Linda made it even better! BTW, a “dojo” is a martial arts studio. I think you mean a dobro. And as you guessed and later saw for yourself, it’s actually a pedal steel guitar on this. However, dobro is a very cool instrument. Rob Ickes is maybe the greatest virtuoso on this instrument. He plays jazz, classical as well as rock, blues and country on it. He is also a pretty good singer.
Hi Beth, another great reaction. I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. The use of a steel guitar in Ronstadt's music is not unusual. She's 'flirted' with country music her whole career. She did a fine version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles", earlier in her career, along with many other country songs. I'm reminded that country rock legends, the Eagles, were her backing band, once upon a time. Also, and I'm sure you're aware, but just for the cheap seats, Peter Asher is the brother of Jane Asher, who was Paul McCartney's girlfriend when Beatlemania first broke. Sir Paul didn't think "A World Without Love" was good enough for the Beatles, so he gave it to Peter and Gordon. By the way, Peter Asher has appeared on stage earlier this year to perform with Lyle Lovett!
Hey Beth, new subscriber cuz THIS song popped up in mys suggestions. True story. My mom had a brief career as a rock concert promoter producer in the mid 1970s. One of her MOST successful concerts was Linda Ronstadt. I was a teen guy in middle school, and was a free (duh) worker on the whole concert with full access EVERYWHERE, like NO ONE ELSE. I not ONLY met her, but hung with ehr in her dressing room before the concert, and THEN, got to watch her sing THIS from the side of the stage, like the ONLY person there, and just a few feet away. MINDBOGGLING. The only drawback was that the sound itself was probably the worst in the whole Paoli Soleri Ampitheater in Santa Fe. So yeah, my relationship with THIS song and artist is DEEP. Have the ancient bw photos to prove it too luckily. On another note (pun intended), I am a BRAND NEW REACTOR with a BRAND NEW CHANNEL. Never reacted before and have YET to do my first. I've finally albeit very tardily seen Robert Plant, John Fogerty, Judy Collins, Paul McCartney, and others. But I really kick myself for not having seen Linda at her rock n roll cover queen peak in the 1970s. (To my tastes, Heart Like A Wheel is one of the most perfect albums ever recorded.) There has never been an artist with so much success across so many genres as Linda R.. from rock, country, Broadway, American standards, R&B to (to this day) the top selling non English album in US history with her multi platform Spanish language album giving salute to her Latina heritage
Reitererating a point you made in the video. At 75 I'm mostly retired from music but I still do Music Therapy with Alzheimer patients. I find that doing songs from their teenage years generally opens them up to a flood of memories and gets them to interact positively when they are normally either quiet or sometimes verbally abusive. Wonderful analysis Beth.
I grew up in the "Bayou City", i.e., Houston, Texas. East Texas & Louisiana are bayou country. Every time that I hear Linda Ronstadt sing "Blue Bayou" it brings me back home!
I'm so glad that you waited for her to get thru the first section of the song before stopping. I was staring at your mouse hand thinking "DON'T DO IT!" and you didn't. Instead you moved both hands together and just allowed yourself to be moved by the magic! Easily my favorite LR song.

That Peter & Gordon song was written by Paul McCartney, when he was dating Peter's sister Jane Asher, and crashing at their parents' London home. Peter has been performing and producing since the early Beatles' days, and knows everyone in the business. Saw him last year at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ, and he has some great stories to tell, including the story of World Without Love.
BTW, a "dojo" is martial arts studio. What were meaning to say was "dobro" which is a type of guitar usually played with a slide guitar style. But in this song it's a pedal steel guitar.

You gotta react to Linda singing her Mariachi roots with a gorgeous show of song, dance and ambience she created called “Songs of My Father”. La Charreada.
She pass so easily from a low tone to a very High one. She was a great latin english singer. From a Beautiful time that sadly can not come back any more.
Peter Asher is the brother of Jane Asher, Paul McCartney's girlfriend, plus he lived with their family in London, and wrote Yesterday in his attic room with a piano.
Peter Asher's sister was Paul McCartney's girlfriend in the early 60s. Paul lived in the Asher's house. The Peter & Gordon hit, "World without Love" was written by Lennon/McCartney.
Very surprised you have not done this iconic performance until now...she's in total control with talent AND interpretation in sync with the emotion of the song. Oh, and it's not the singer's job to kiss the ass of the soundman, it's the other way around, that's what he is paid for. Especially if it's Linda Ronstadt, a trained singer, not a screamer.
Interesting comment about her dynamic range. I have picked up that Linda was not happy with the final mix of the studio version. And its true - you had to crank it up to hear the quieter vocals, and then when she busts out, the speakers at the same volume would blast it out (it was way too loud). This live version is much more listenable.
Professional sound engineers use Linda Ronstadt’s songs to set EQ’S when installing a new high end system. I’ve witnessed it several times with different professionals.
I would love to hear your reaction to one song in each of her different musical genres How do I make you Poor wandering one What’s new La Charreada Down so low Lovesick blues You can’t imagine how versatile and great when the run that is
Speaking up for sound engineers... If it needs to be evened out (sometimes you don't want that), a little microphone technique solves the problem. When you belt louder, if you don't want to peg the meters and distort the sound (or kick in too much compression from limiters, these days), just hold the mike further away from your mouth.
I recently found your channel and love to watch it with my kids. My daughter could sing this song at 18 months! I have a few video ideas for you, although I realize you must get thousands. How about the following: Jim Morrison/The Doors (but not “Light My Fire”-too overdone) Tom Waits-maybe a ballad like “Time, Time, Time” The Smiths/Morrisey-particularly “It’s Over.” Thank you for teaching us so much about music!

Apparently it takes a LEGEND to make ANOTHER legend. Pretty cool stuff
Don't forget Jackson Browne. He was in the mix also.
And J.D. Souther too. He wrote with both Linda and the Eagles. And he dated Linda for a time.
RIP JD Souther
A (pre-)Monkee, Michael Nesmith, wrote Linda's first hit, Different Drum.
This song has stuck with me for close to 50 years. Her vocals are beautiful.
That last "Blue Bayou" gives me goosebumps every time.

Emmylou Harris said that when Linda lost her voice, we all lost her voice.
Linda’s voice is transcendent, hearing it just elevates and soothes immediately. She’s incredible.
That last note showed a hint of her mezzo-soprano chopps. This woman is brilliant 👏 😊
I’ve always loved this woman’s voice she’s amazing
This particular performance is one of the top ten live singing performances I've ever seen.
she was pitch perfect when she opened her mouth. "one-take Linda", she was called in the studio.
I saw Linda MANY times live and anytime she started singing this song I knew I'd better brace myself for that ending. Always gorgeous.
I love Linda singing Desperado by The Eagles. Her voice gives me chills. ❤

A song has to be exceptional when two different singers can perform differently but also perfectly.
Yep, Roy did a helluva job with this.
I was 7 years old when this song was released and it has always been one of my favorites.
I had to look it up - no clue when it came out as it was always my most favorite song. (I was 7)
Linda's version of "Blue Bayou" is a perfect song. It can not be improved. It is her song, no one else can touch it.

10:38 Beth's face when Linda sings that last note... Such a great reaction.
she took Roy Orbison's song and made it her own! simply beautiful
Just like Janus Joplin did with several songs including "Summertime", and "Me and Bobby McGee" among others.
@@johndavidwolf4239 numerous artists did the same with all genres of music, Patsy Cline made "Crazy" a classic that Willie Nelson wrote

I have a few video ideas for you, although I realize you must get thousands. How about the following:
Jim Morrison/The Doors (but not “Light My Fire”-too overdone)
Tom Waits-maybe a ballad like “Time, Time, Time”
The Smiths/Morrisey-particularly “It’s Over.”
Thank you for teaching us so much about music!
Kelly Clarkson has done this on her show as well, def worth a listen.
And Peter Asher was almost Paul McCartney’s BIL- until Sis Jane called it off. Paul was still sowing wild oats at the time.

Beth @9:11, it was "the evening tide", not time.
