    don't know how i stumbled over to this video, but it was very cool to see. It felt real, you spoke well to the audience, you went through your process with the camera and none of it felt like some instragram influencer bullshit. All very chill, imo.

    Pretty sure those old photographers just zoned focused and called it a day.

    It gets easier when you do it more. But it's clear I think why Robert Capa went from a Leica IIIa to a Contax II with the single viewfinder when he got the chance.
    That being said, one thing I've learned: in terms of the triangle, I'd rather give up some shutter speed for a smaller f-stop. I can be slightly out of focus on the rangefinder at f8 and still come out looking pretty good.
    Unless you're wanting to bokeh-fy every shot, there's no reason to be shooting less than f5.6

    Craftsmanship is needed here, the model is great in scene and the pictures are really of amazing quality for such an old camera without the electronic support.

    I have a III from the same year. Put a strap on it. It's the best feeling camera to just wear on yourself. No bulging eye cups to graze your torso. Just a flat smooth surface that sticks to you wherever you go.

    The only thing I remember about shooting those cameras is that you should never change the shutter dial without the shutter being cocked. Otherwise they are great cameras. Very small and the focus is actually more precise than any M model. Plus the build in diopter is fantastic.
    Great pics!

      The damage to a shutter by changing this way came through the first model Hasselblads and subsequent Soviet era 35mm and medium format cameras having their shutters damaged by people not adhering to the instructions.

      Don't worry about a Leica

    You should try some of the Canon copies from the same era. Compatible build quality, but with an integrated viewfinder/range finder. Been shooting with a IID2 for a couple months and like you said, it's been a huge privilege!

      Like the Canon IVsb. This is very similar to the Leica iiia. However, it has an integrated viewfinder that provides views of 35mm, 50mm and 135mm lenses. There is also an accessory that fits on to the side of the camera so that you can use an electronic flash.
      The Canon ltm lenses are also very sharp and well made. My favorite Leica ltm lenses are the 5cm F2 Summar and the 9cm F4 Elmar.

      @@johnrflinn The Canons innovated from the IV series on. And incorporated useful innovations! I say this having shot both. I admire the Leicas heavily!

    I think the viewfinder focus would've been to shoot from a tripod and simply get framing. You shoot with something for at least a couple days, zone focusing is pretty easy. Also if you rotate the lens left right, left right you can nail focus really quick.

    So when you compose, how do you know if the subject is not cut off the frame since the viewfinder is not lined up with the lens?

    • @NolanBegley
      @NolanBegley  2 роки тому

      To be honest, it’s slightly a guessing and praying game lol. The two viewfinders are very close together, but some mental measurements are required for sure. It was a fun process!

    Is the lens a 50/3.5 Elmar? I've read on various reviews that color film is not its strong point (better shoot BW). But nevertheless, not shabby for gear older than 8 decades :D

    • @NolanBegley
      @NolanBegley  2 роки тому +3

      It was! I think shooting in B&W would've been a great move because that's what it was intended for haha...
      Nonetheless, the colours were surprisingly pleasant!

      The family Leica IIIa had a pre-World-War-II 50mm f1.5-9 Taylor Hobson Xenon speed lens that had dirt and cloudy elements present that yielded low-contrast, fuzzy images. As soon as I could I replaced it with a 1950's 50mm f/3.5 Collapsible Elmar, which was miles ahead. It produced great Kodachrome slides and black-and-white prints in the 1960's. Color print film was ASA 80 Kodacolor, which was a bit too expensive, so it was "slides or monochrome prints" only. I couldn't find slip-on filters or a proper lens cap for it, but it was a good match. 50mm f/2 Summar or Summitar? Those were Collector's Lenses for a poor high school/college photographer.
