Nothing made my stomach turn more than her saying “consider it a graduation gift” or something along those lines. Absolutely vile.
That scene is so jarring because Midori really did seem like a kind, caring, genuine, and honest person.

It's been a long time since i've read the Manga fully but I think the moment Midori non-conned Punpun was the moment everything changed for him. He had always had his immature moments but that act going forward I think twisted him into something truly horrible. His understanding of relationships, women, and sex had been utterly destroyed. It's no shock at the end of the manga that he would do everything he had gone through and witnessed to Akko. Poor girl.

@@blueantic5719 I disagree, I think it was him killing Aiko's mother (or thinking he did) even after finding out that he didn't technically kill her (Aiko was the one who finished her off). He had already gone too far in his psychotic mindset, and continues to be aggressive, ignorant and harmful. Maybe, very maybe, if that didn't happen he would run away peacefully with Aiko, without the stress and weight of having crossed the line of KILLING someone. Both would be without this enormous weight and pressure on their backs. They would just run away from their problems to another place in the hope that now together they would give each other happiness by leaving their old lives behind (despite being depressed). The relationship would still be pretty bad. Both being too dependent on each other to be happy could lead to the same line of events: physical abuse, never separating despite the abuse, and suicide.

No one's justifying his actions they're just empathizing with him and his character whereas people like you (moralist) are whining because a group of people are coming together to understand someone or something which goes against your programming and its funny since its no different from what this side of punpun readers are doing which is coming together to spite or discuss how bad some manga characters actions are. You don't have to like his actions and I'm pretty sure no one does but not everyone is full of themselves with this good guy patriot code at least to the point where they can't simply analyze or relate to the next. The only bother really is that people prefer to do this for fiction and not one another in day to day life glorifying and normalizing their own form of hate every chance they get.

I won't argue the guy did lots of bad things, him using Aiko to vent when she came to him for help being the moment he could never be called a "good person". What disqualifies him as a "monster" though comes shortly before Aiko's death where he claims to put himself in the authorities way should she turn herself in. As opposed to him saying he won't go to prison out of her misplaced sense of priorities. As well as opposed to the majority of choices he made prior to that in over 100 chapters of that story. Sure it was masochistically selfish, so "she could wait for him". Still, it proves that in his way, he held on his vow to try to protect her to the very end.

    • @KingShadows1

lllll282, we can agree to disagree. A monster might be a stretch but that’s how I viewed him from the last half of the manga.

I'm still at the beginning of reading the manga, so I don't know much about Punpun's future (although I've seen spoilers). But this story sometimes really reminds me of Bojack horseman. There too, a man faced an awful childhood and when he became an adult, he started doing shitty things. And I think Todd's quote is very on point: “You are all the things that are wrong with you. It's not the alcohol, or the drugs, or any of the shitty things that happened to you in your career, or when you were a kid. It's you"

Goodnight Punpun is a cautionary tale for sure because what's even more sickening than ppl relating to Punpun is that there are crime cases that reference 'Goodnight Punpun' and the most infamous one is the 'Bianca Devins Case'. When I did my research on the case, it was mentioned that the perpetrator referenced Aiko's 'Remember Me' wish and tried to off himself the same way Punpun did, after having murdered Bianca. And in the end, the perpetrator lived and was justly sentenced to 25 to Life in a NY Penitentiary. But then he grew in infamy just like Punpun.

Iirc the author considers the ending a bad ending. He would ve died saving sachi's daughter and redeeming himself sort of? But living on doing things he doesnt want to do is more of a punishment for his actions. So his life with sachi is more like being her pet. I also remember thinking all those shooting stars showing up in the night sky while waiting to die was like a huge "f*ck you" to punpun for telling aiko that he'd wish for no more shooting stars

      Long text, BEWARE 0-0
It all depends on perspective, yes the author said that "Living is harder than dying" but if you think about it, Punpun in the end chose to live, he for the first time in years seemed free from his troubled mind (He literally stabs GOD in one of the pages, which was his left eye, it could just be idk a "cool" censor, but anyway, GOD being just a even darker version of himself, get stab ,It's a very visual way FOR ME that shows that he changed in that point, he kill the darkest version of himself, He would die if Nanjou didn't find him at that moment)but he chooses to live even if it's difficult and he's aware of it (this time without intrusive thoughts, he would kill himself if he had greater impulses or more courage at other times in his life )
anyway, it's all a matter of perspective, the ending is AMBIGUOUS on purpose after all.
I think it's cool, I saw many different perspectives (including yours) thanks to this, it's interesting, how our perception of the ending, or the characters, or the situations themselves, say more about US as individuals than about the story itself, After all, we are the ones who choose what we want to believe!
