I am only aware of it because I seem to attract guys who love it, so it's been a bit of a red flag for me... watching your analysis confirmed a lot of my suspicions towards the series (and the fanbase), e.g. Aiko sharing the traits of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl concept, even if she is unique as a character. I'll be more careful around these fans, thank you!
If you can relate to Pun Pun, don't try to find love, fix whatever it is you find relatable within yourself before you disappoint the next person you try to "love".

I figured when Punpun got his own place, he was slipping into depression because I got the indication that he didn't really want to do anything but be like the old guy that occupied the apartment; to not bother doing anything until he died or killed himself.
After reading a lot of analysis based on the author's perspective, I'm so happy to find this video that deals with the psychological side of the story. What a great video man, i just finished Oyasumi Punpun last week and I'm still into it. Hope you create more video like this, it's great content 🍀.
One thing i realized is that all the people who dislike or find Goodnight Punpun disturbing are only because they do not know what exactly disorders feel like, they never had to deal with it. Only those who suffer and fight with their own inside demons every minutes for melancholic disorder knows how much it sucks, they know how suffocating it is to change moods every mins, being unable to get out of this goddam moodiness and worst part is being totally clueless for why all these are happening to them.
I think Oyasumi punpun is overated. The element of how dark and how griping and emotional the story is. I feel as a reader, you read the manga you feel sympathy for punpun early on with how broken but together his family is. He is simply discontent with everything, he wants romance/sex and gets it from midori, nanjou, aiko, soccer chick. Has no problems with friends who genuinely care about him, maybe socialisingin general but has a support network. Made all his decisions, such as leaving his uncles home, staying out of contact with his dad, he should've been going to therapy. Along with all the weird actions inbetween, reading the manga, knowing how well he's doing, academically progressing towards his real estate license. It feels like he's angry that things are fine, that he doesn't have a excuse to abandon everything or wallow in his own mind which he tries so much to do. He then meets Aiko again, his idyllic excuse and an individual so conceited and possessive as he is and saves her by protecting her against her abusive mother. He then feels finally dammed and can now drop all his pretentious nice-guy placated civility. Runs off in a deranged abusive relationship with Aiko, where he tries to embrace his delusional frame that's he's a killer, stringing Aiko along which she wants to but honestly has no choice, thinking of how to dispose of her and himself. At this point Punpun idyllic image of Aiko is ruined and he just sees her as simply a nuisance, they both contemplate disposing each other and the reality of Aiko situation gets the most of her and she commits suicide. Punpun returns home, similar to his uncle, and tries to commit suicide, with his obvious impending future being difficult to determine, and is saved by nanjou. Ultimately its a interesting but exhausting story of idiots and people who are lacking in conscientiousness, seki who is understandable and reasonable can't help but be compulsive and rely on Shimizu, pegasus and the mathematician, nanjou with Punpun, the uncle and Midori. Everyone is so dreary and pretentious.
I have borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder. First BPD is NOT a mood disorder its a personality disorder. I had a similar childhood to punpun and i've only read the first book of Goodnight Punpun and I thought it would give me hope for my depression. Seeing the spoilers for the rest of the manga of how it ends out I honestly hate it. I'm so tired of all these doomed depression stories especially around characters that have BPD because what am i supposed to take out of it? That I now wanting to work on myself and be accountable for the those I hurt cause of my BPD in the past should give up even trying cause this is the only hope I have? I dunno i feel a sort of betrayl in hearing what this manga had become, i guess its fine for people to understand how victums can end up as abusers but as someone who saw so many of these doom-like stories i've grown to be tired of them and their doom and stigmatization but that's just me personally.
To be fair, this is just my personal assumption of what could be going on with the character. Not that it was ever stated in the manga. There is hope in living a good life with your condition, media just likes to portray the negatives of it.

They taught us about the hierachy of needs in my group about trauma and we were identifying which needs were not met in our childhoods bc of abuse. So its really cool to see you mention it
He did enjoy Aiko, they were both going in and out of trusting each other because of the circumstances, I belive its one of the few times pun pun is actually happy in the series, when he's hanging out with her and doing her. It's way easier to belive he goes into shock after aiko is owari. They essentially did everything they wanted to do with eachother at that point. Unfortunately everything was already in shambles when they were finally satisfied and ready to look forward. Also Aiko basically got punpun to kill her mom the same way the girl from the clay modeling classes did, they could've just run away, they were both adults. They just let their feelings take over that chapter. Just going back to Aiko's mother was the worst decision in the whole manga.
Don't try to find love until you sort yourself out. Pun Pun is an extreme that will disapoint anyone they try to love. Get help on your own or with people you trust before you hurt someone you love with toxic apathy.
