  • A student in the CFSC reminded me of two key strategies for mastering spoken French, and I'm excited to share them with you 🤩
1️⃣ The first way involves building sentences word by word, expressing your thoughts, opinions, and emotions.
2️⃣ Start with an audio source - a video, radio, or interview. Your goal? Replicate the sounds and parts where sounds are stressed and unstressed, without focusing too much on the meaning of each word or sentence. This method sharpens your pronunciation, stress, and rhythm, bringing you closer to sounding like a native speaker.
By blending these approaches, you can dramatically improve your French speaking skills over time. However keep in mind that it is a slow process, so having patience is key here!
Give them a try and let me know how it goes! 🎙️💫

One method I came up with, which really really helped my pronunciation, is this. I bought a book which I had previously read but in French. Then, I bought the audio book also in French. Together, I read and listened to the book at the same time. Dune, in French, was magnificent! Try it, it works!

Wonderful. How long did it take you to go through it? That's a beast of a book even in English. If doing it specifically for pronunciation, it might take a year!
Curious about the specifics of your method.

@@FrenchinPlainSight It took me about two months, reading an hour a day. And, of course, highlighting specific words unknown to me in French. But the best part is learning then knowing exactly how to pronounce each word/sentence. Dune was particularly good since it forced the French translator to use all registers of French from Royal speak to Peasant/Street register.

Pronunciation practice using audio sources is very effective. It's more or less imitation / mimic but it really does help (in time). One of my favourite sources is the French television programme On n'est pas couché, for example Laurent Rouquier's interviews of Florence Foresti in the personages Isabelle Adjani, Ségolène, Céline Dion, Madonna, Dominique Pipeau etc. It's also great fun because as you progress, more and more of the humour is discovered.

I love this method. I listen to French talk radio when I'm in the car and repeat phrases from the dialogue

Lol my French R is 😘 I practiced so much and eventually it just clicked. "La soirée promet d'être très traître" does the trick for the R.

      That's awesome! I hope you're proud!
I think people underestimate how much repetition it takes for some sounds.

A similar technique is to e.g. have the radio or a podcast on and ignore it whilst concentrating on something else.
Also it seems to me that we speak in phrases not words so learning phrases works much better than just learning words and bolting them together.

I'm curious as to what level of results you've gotten from passively listening while doing other things.
Obviously it's hard to measure but can you describe it in your case?

I mostly watch UA-cam videos and try to listen each word carefully
I would be helpful if anyone could tell me some tips to be confident while speaking French. I really want to practice my speaking but can't

Regarding your second point, it's also good to develop verbal memory. I've done what you suggest, i.e. saying the words/sounds from an aural source, but the another part is remembering what you've heard and repeating it.

Yep. There are many different parts to it. This is simply just for pronunciation and doesn't take into account recall :)
