- Cumbia is a music style that originated in Colombia's Caribbean coastal region. Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among the African slave population that was later mixed with European instruments and musical characteristics. Cumbia started in the northern coast of South America, what is now Colombia and Panama, mainly in or around Cartagena during the period of Spanish colonization. Spain used its ports to import African slaves, who tried to preserve their musical traditions and also turned the drumming and dances into a courtship ritual. Cumbia was mainly performed with just drums and claves.

This type of music its not really Colombian its African mixed with Indian (flute played by the Indians). It's a mixed culture, Colombia comes from Christopher Columbus's last name he's Italian but helped by the Spanish. The Europeans did not bring this type of music, its origin is dancing to dead people with candles. There is a museum that teaches that don't remember where it is. You won't hear this type of music in Bogota, Medellin, Cali,Pereira. Most Afro descendants stayed by the coast. It's not Colombian music.
It’s very Colombian just because it’s not “popular” does not mean that it is not rich in COLOMBIAN culture or that it does not exist
It's African culture the dance you see it was originally a dance for the dead. In Cartagena there's a museum where they explain everything. Colombia comes from Columbus Colombia is originally Spanish descendants, the Africans brought their own music not the Spaniards.
Fernando Salas of coarse the Spaniards didn’t invent cumbia if that’s what you mean
@@sacraeluvoe2584 exactly it's African not Colombian, Francisco de Miranda heard classical music not cumbia it didn't come from Europe.
Fernando Salas I agree with you on that a hundred percent but I’m not talking about Christopher Columbus or Europe I’m talking about the country it’s apart of the culture in of Colombia ( the country in South America )
