  • I discuss what a code status is. What it means to be full code, do not resuscitate (DNR), do not intubate (DNI) and comfort measures. I briefly explain who decides code status and when it is decided.

I really appreciate the time you took to create this video series. I know you probably had med students in mind when you made them. I'm no med student. I'm somebody that made my first entrance into a ICU when my dad had gotten Pneumonia. When I left the ICU it really left a bad taste in my mouth. Nothing made since to me. It would be wonderful if you could tell me if I've totally misnterpeted my experience or if as I see and feel it, it's unexplainable and makes absolutely no since. Here are the facts:. December 12, 2021 at approximately 11:00pm, my dad was taken to in an ambulance to the ER, after he had complained of having trouble breathing and he was concious and alert the whole time until he was sedated at the hospital. The hospital said he had Pneumonia (I don't know who or how that was determined). So, about 8 hours later my brother and I got the call that my dad wasn't doing too well and we needed to get to the hospital. Upon arrival we found my dad sedated in the ICU and he had a supplemental oxygen mask on. Not a ventilator or anything like that. So my dad's wife was there also and she had been there with him the entire time. Who she talked to or had conversations with we don't know. She was trying to explain as little as possible. So, it's impossible to know what to expect and what the normal procedure would be in a ICU having never visited one. Your videos have changed all that. Is the following in anyway normal? The only person we saw come in and out of the room a few times the entire time was just one nurse. Here were no doctors. No Critical Care Team as you described. No members of the Clergy or priest. No one was there to explain anything to me or my brother about what was going on or why. So, by approximately 11:30am my dad's oxygen mask was intentionally removed and his oxygen level dropped rapidly from the stable level of 88% to whatever was nessassery to kill him. I don't know how low his oxygen level had to get before he died. When I realized what was going on I left the building and went outside. Now in your video you even use Pneumonia as an example of what a patient would expect if that's what they had been diagnosed with. Antibiotics and supplemental oxygen and would then work towards reversing this illness. Nothing like this was done. There were no underlying conditions. He was 76 years old and otherwise in good health. He did not have septis. I even got the long form of his Certificate Of Death and it says for cause of death: Pneumonia. Nothing else. Not primary Pneumonia. Not Covid-19. Nothing but Pneumonia. All of his vitals at the time were good, his oxygen level was low as I mentioned at 88%. hbpm was aprox. 100. And his blood pressure was low at around 90/60. The nurse and my dad's wife were in a hurry to remove that oxygen mask as quick as possible. Why? I don't know. My brother and I weren't even allowed to speak to my dad before the mask was removed. My dad was autonomous. He was not brain dead. He did not have any kind of terminal disease or anything. And I believe he was about to wake up and then he could of explained what was going on, if he knew that is. So my dad arrived at the hospital and was told he had Pneumonia and just 12 hours later he was dead. He was having difficulty trying to breathe, but he could breathe. Once he was sedated he couldn't breathe without the supplemental oxygen . Can you think of any scenario that would support what took place? Thanks again

Thanks for watching! There are a lot of misconceptions about DNR so I wanted to bring some clarity to this important topic. ✨
