Katie came to South Africa a few years ago and was a guest one afternoon on East Coast radio in Durban. To the DJ's surprise, she brought her guitar with her and after the interview offered to play `Closest Thing To Crazy' live on air. What a beautiful crystal clear voice she has and blew the DJ and all of us listeners away. It was a perfect performance. You could hear the DJ was overwhelmed as he kept saying `That was live folks. That was live in our studio'.
That's how I felt when I first saw her on an Australian morning TV show while I was getting ready to go to work something like 20 years ago. She was so pretty that I assumed she was just another pop starlet manufactured in the studio. Then she started playing the acoustic guitar and that incredibly melodic voice made me forget my breakfast.
That's soul. It's intentionally to express disharmony in her soul. Similar like Tanita Tikaram with Twist in my sobriety which is also not off key but soul.
