There's a warmth, a solidness and consistent tone with the Stamchild where the plugin sounds empty in comparison. It just misses something so important. Plugins are getting better and better but they're still inferior to actual analogue gear imho.
The Stem and the Heritage Audio Fairchilds both use sixteen 6ba6 tubes instead of the eight 6386 tubes that the Origional, remake and the Unfairchild use. This is in the audio path for gain reduction. The Stem is missing tubes for both the power supply and more importantly the side chain circuit. As far as I can tell they use an IC for gain reduction in the side chain circuit.
Men listen OMG… a sa670 is dubble the 660 . The mk2 stamchild has like the og also a tube powersupply the mk1 has a solid state. The mk2 has a mod for bending the knee differently. The mk1 has also a totally pass knob hiding in the wed knob at number 11 also a lowpasfilter only it’s for channel 1 and 2 together just like the wed and dry and the output knob. Effectively the mk1 uses a knobs twice versus the mk2 are separated the too in too 660 compressors but has an extra 1u space. I got a mk1 and everything makes it organically super clean and not gritty like a plugg-in does. But you can make the u87 like a tube mic by using the Fairchild. Stamchild unfairchild her child. Maybe there is a small difference. But all sound good. And not “fet” rigid. The plugg-in makes is srill or would say destroy the highs. Also a good option.
We use a hybrid side chain circuit with tubes and transformers on front end. It has the same compression curve has the original. The tube power supply doesn't make any sonic difference. I tested this hundreds (maybe thousands of hours). It would just make the unit more expensive to no sonic advantage!
Ahaaaaa! Found you! I’ve been messaging Turnlab and they said, that a UA-camr was borrowing their stamchild for making a video. I’ve been looking for this UA-camr and I’ve found you :))) I finally bought this piece of gear. Can’t wait to have it!
I will add though that the Shadow Hills Master Class and SPL Iron plugins when I oversample them do make my audio MUCH better and give it punch and color for sure.
I dear you TO SHOOT the Stam Audio out against Ultramarine....you get the full functional Demo with Acustica Audio for 30 Days........Id love to see your opinion on that....because thats more a FAIR shootout...thats going to be ANY regular algorithmic digital non analog sampled plugin
Its clearly not CRAP. Lots of using music is made with digital processing (all music) and 99.9% of it is recorded digitally. Plugins can and do sound great - just because analog often sounds better doesn’t mean “all digital = crap” how absolutely myopic and single minded
@@Rhuggins I have a bit of good hardware units that I ONLY use for recording. I would never use anything analog for mixing.. as it does not make any sense to me.
Great video. The Stam sounds better than the plugs, richer and more 3D. Did you figure out the tube question? Thanks man
Phenomenal work as always Thomas keep these videos up you are doing gods work 🙌
It sound really good! The first one I really hear beating the UA plugin easily

Haha amazing! I’ll send it back asap so you can have it then! Its a great unit!
Piano compression is extremely aggressive for me. I like to use softer, more musical settings to understand compare before plugins and analog.
Plugin kills the vibe of 3D space - Digital and sounds like a nuance-less snapshot.
I will add though that the Shadow Hills Master Class and SPL Iron plugins when I oversample them do make my audio MUCH better and give it punch and color for sure.
PMC Vs ATC 🙏
Yea, the hardware have more body and dynamics. More 3D sounding.
A hardware device only sounds good if good power / cable / converter is good
I'm giving 3k euros worth of plugins for this beauty.
Is the difference from the plugin worth $6000?
No.
It’s a minor difference but not a 6,000 worth.

plugins will always sound like just digital / the same as digital and analog mixers / unfortunately digital = crap

@@JuanJacinto good for you. To each their own. It is a royal pain in the ass to mix analog but i love the sound
