I don't believe it's just women of african decent who are obsessed with long hair, it's universal, all cultures love long hair.

Yes, that's right, I am from Sudan, and was raised in Saudi Arabia, most of the women I met there were obsessed with Long hair, even if they have a straight hair, they couldn't have a very long hair because of the damage they made for their hair or the ignorant of how to take care of their own hair, it's universal.

But black women are on another level though. Some of us are so obsessed with "length retention" that it has turned into some kind of religion.

@@BlackFemaleAnd50not true at all. If you hang around white women enough they like that as well. Many are obsessed with other white girls with long especially healthy hair. The difference is it’s typically easier for white women to grow long hair because their hair grows faster.

I desire long hair because I genuinely think I'm most beautiful with big hair. I have very high shrinkage 4c hair and don't have or want hair flowing down my back, but I love huge afros. I'm currently armpit length after a big chop 2 years ago and I can't wait for my hair to be where I want it to be. I won't apologize to a damn soul for wanting what I want and don't give a rat's behind about their opinions. Some women look fantastic with a twa and some do with a massive afro. I'm team 'the bigger the afro, the better'.

I just big chopped a few months ago and I definitely want to grow long hair. Big hair (styled in a twist/braid out) requires length. I think I look better with hair around my face. Also, longer hair gives you more styling options. I don’t wear wigs or extensions.

I want long natural hair because if I'm being fully honest here, I view it as an accomplishment. Long hair in our community is usually (not always) a sign that the woman has taken good care of it and consistently loved herself well. Of course, that's not always the case, but to me that's what it represents. It's an accomplishment. Short hair is beautiful too, just as long as its healthy. And girl SHOW IT OFF. You earned it and you deserve it. Showing it off is a testament against all the false narrative that out hair doesn't grow. It's also an inspiration to other black women. There's always gonna be haters though. I love your hair and I love your videos. ❤❤❤

    • @preciousfro

First, I’ve been enjoying my hair without any extensions for several years during my natural hair journey. For me, enjoying my hair as is without extensions, wigs, or weaves, regardless of how long or short it was, was the 1st step in self love and enjoying my beauty; my face, skin and body period. Once I started appreciating myself as is, head to toe, I realized I didn’t need any enhancements. I pay attention now to how I take care of my hair and body. Now that I’ve put in the work and grown my hair healthy and close to waist length, if I want to add hair, it’s an option and not an everyday crutch!

I wonder if one of the reasons some made those comments to your reaction video to the ludicrous, “don’t bring your natural hair to my event” comment, goes back to how we as a culture see TWAs. Often we cover our hair up in braids/wigs during the “awkward” length to look more aesthetically pleasing to ourselves and to others plus it protects our hair until we’re out of the stage we’re less comfortable with. It can feel “easier” for someone with long natural hair to wear their hair to an event and still feel like the style aligns with their aesthetic vs. someone with shorter natural hair. That being said, I wish we could normalize the beauty in short natural hair and I take my hat off to people like Lupita who help to show natural hair looks beautiful at every length. I know I could be apart of the solution as a girlie with short natural hair which is why I challenge myself, regardless of how uncomfortable it can be, to wear my short mini braids to work. It’s like I’m trying to deprogram myself and send a message everytime i do it. (i will be getting braids soon 😅 lol but baby steps matter).Thank you for creating your content and a forum to have this conversation.

I’m 53 and still love the idea of having long hair. The Bible tells us it is a glory to us (1st Corinthians 11:15). However, all hair types and lengths can be beautiful if well maintained. I think the struggle for us is “option”. Black women would love to have all options available to them just like other racial groups. If we choose to wear it long or short we should have that choice. However, (although we always grew hair), most of us had no idea how to retain length until running across channels of beautiful young sisters, such as yourself, who educate sisters of all generations about their unique strands and how to appreciate it.
Coming up in the 80’s, colorism, texturism, and length judgment was the norm. The girls with the long locks were always complimented and admired. This can indeed lead to an obsession to strongly desire a feature you don’t possess. Let’s face it, our people have been traumatized at the hands of the European as well as within our own families and communities. We were rejected for not possessing certain characteristics or features. But With the help of The Most High Yah (God) and education, we are more than conquerors!! 🙌🏾

I have past clavicula hair. But it always looks like it's just on top of my shoulders and shrinks up to my neck after a few days. I have no problem with that but because I admire people who can have their hair like yours, I'm on the journey of growing mine. You make me love my hair even more, and believe that long hair is achievable 😃

I remember being teased as a child because my hair was to my shoulders people saying I’m wearing a weave and pulling my hair all because most black kids around me had 4c hair with a lot of shrinkage my hair is more 3b-4a depending on the section. As an adult that went natural when it wasn’t popular over 15 years ago I have wanted long healthy hair. I never knew how to take care of my natural hair and for me, growing long hair is me successfully taking care of my hair and giving it what it needed to grow. My hair was breaking so much but with my new obsession of herbs and protective styles, I’m hoping to prove to myself that my hair can grow and be healthy with a natural routine. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can achieve until then mini twists and occasionally a wig.

I want long hair ,because my experience & the way I have been socialized has made me to believe that long hair is more beautiful, i have often heard a woman's hair is her beauty & this is often referenced toward a woman when her hair is past her shoulders, but I also want long hair as I want to wear certain styles that require long hair. And I don't want to wear fake hair to achieve it. I also prefer the way my face looks with big hair around it, esp when i do twist and it fluffs up, i constantly get asked how do you het your hair like that, it just looks better and the reactions says it all.

4:43 because they don’t think they can do it. they have a *lack* mindset. my mom was arguing DOWN with me when i realized how much stuff in my hair regiment that i needed to change that it was about genetics bc when we went to the salon some people had longer hair than others (ours). and i had to explain to her that those people could have still had better hair routines at home or started with healthier hair to begin with.
i think she was in denial bc she had gotten sister locs due to wanting to deal with her hair and not knowing how to retaining length before getting them. 🤷🏾‍♀️
she relied on her salon stylist (they only care about healthy *looking* hair, not actually healthy hair) for hair advice, and she basically just told us how to maintain our silk presses for longer and to get regular trims 😐

I’m good with my continued natural hair journey. My hair is thriving and I LOVE seeing Queens of all hair types. I love to uplift with a beautiful comment which normally starts a conversation about their hair routine..I soak up info and I’m still learning about my natural hair. There is so much negativity nowadays, I refuse to be a part of the hate. We all are one of a kind and unique in our own special God given way. Beauty is different for everyone. We did not come from the same mold and the variety is so beautiful …some ladies will have short hair, long hair, no hair, relaxed hair and so on…everyone has their own individual preferences. I think people need to understand words hurt and if you can’t say something to uplift someone…well, keep it to yourself. Thanks for sharing this topic…oh..I’m good with my hair at any length..but that’s just me❤

I believe that women in general desire long hair. Perhaps God instilled this in us. Long hair is attributed to beauty, femininity, desirability, and fertility. God in his infinite wisdom perhaps created these identifiable traits/desires to differentiate the male from the female. Consider some tribes, especially in Africa where hair is viewed in selection of a mate. I truly don't believe it's cut and dry regarding black women when it comes to desiring long hair. I as you don't believe it's because we have been influenced by euro ideas; it's inherently simple women want to be loved and desired. That is the simple truth in my opinion. I truly appreciate your channel and subject matter Great topics for discussion. God bless ❤

Black women are the only race of women who are told that we shouldn't talk about wanting long hair. Nobody tells white women, who have fine hair that is known to not grow long, that they cannot desire long hair. Nobody tells East Asian women, who also have thin hair, that they cannot desire long hair. Only us. It's annoying. It's like some Black women have such low self esteem that they cannot fathom that YES, our hair can and does grow long. ALL races of women have videos on youtube talking about ways to grow longer hair. It's a normal FEMALE desire, not just something only Black women obsess over. We are women FIRST, Black second.

Only 5 years ago did I do the experiment and realized it was actually the sulfate sham😅poo that was dropping my hair out. I would always feel itchy too when using it. I so hate when we try to over intellectualize EVERYTHING…Is it okay to want to be able to grow and have long NATURAL hair? Why does everything have to go back to a Eurocentric standard. I could see if she said she wanted long straight hair, long wavy hair, even long curly hair. She said long luxurious hair that’s all HER HAIR. Why are black women not allowed self expression, why are black women not allow versatlity, why are black women not allowed to state a HAIR preference without all of this drama.
And this is coming from a girl who has waist length natural hair and cut it all off 3 months ago for fun and a change in look. Everything is not this deep. Let Victoria Monet have a hair preference

Maybe some get confused with thinking the Bible says a woman’s hair is her glory. But It doesn’t quite say that: 11 Corinthians 11:15 5 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
I never been obsessed for long hair. But For me; my hair is easier to take care when its longer, I use less products, less manipulation and fast/easier styles, however it is not straight and I don’t like it straight. Straight is too much work and too much damage-for me. Many people I know have grown their hair long and cut it short -they like changing styles, using gels and different styles. Im very low maintenance and lazy when it comes to hair.

I will agree with some other comments and say it’s universal and not only black peoples but I will also say that it comes from slavery as well , black women were forced to either hide or cut their hair because their owner didn’t want them it to catch too much attention, the other black women who had longer hair were the ones that had more privileges from the owners I believe (because of them having a lighter skin) so around that time long hair in the black community became a sign of privilege.
Many other factors caused it but I think slavery was on of the factors that made black women insecure about their hair.

I think black women growing out their hair is their biological right. Because God has given every human being the function of hair growth. Let that sink in. The challenge with the tighter coiled Afro texture hair type is applying the right methods to maintain the growth.
To most it might come across as obsessive, but in my opinion, i think its more about achieveing what black women have been told for decades, that its something that they have no right to which is illogical, if you understand human biology.
Its frggin ridiculous is what it is.

I want my locs to be down to the floor because I want my locs to be down to the floor, not because I want to compete with non-black women. Why is it that Black women can't just want something just because, it always has to be that we want something to be adjacent to non-black women.

I don’t think it’s inherently bad to want longer hair, but I think it would be very disingenuous to say that European beauty standards do not play a role. If these standards did not exist, I feel like a lot of black women would not care if they had long or short hair. Even right now, as a trans woman I’m trying to grow out my hair and I know by having longer hair I will “ pass” as a woman in society. I’m want to challenge these arbitrary standards of womanhood by wearing my short natural hair out more. Both cis and trans black women deserve to feel empowered in any state 🩷

Oh girl it's all over the globe, I am from Sudan, and I have a very long hair since my childhood, now my daughter is 10 years old, and every one in our community knows me always saying to her that she is a bad luck little girl because she didn't inherit my hair, So, I am the one who is obsessed with making her have long hair. The obsession is all over the world even in Arab countries were I grew up, women are really struggling to have long and healthy hair, it's not easy to have long hair even if your hair is straight, it needs effort, time and commitment everywhere.

It’s something that most black women don’t have. Every other race can achieve long silky flowery hair. Black women are at a disadvantage when it comes to hair. No other race deals with this.

I live in Latin America and here long hair has always been an obsession, just like in some Arab countries where women show their hair, I think this obsession in the West, especially in the USA, started with the Kardashians who shaped the new beauty standard.

Yes, I would say most of us black women would love to have long natural hair. But most of us don’t. So why should we complain God made us and formed us in his image so our hair is just the way it should be. Unfortunately we don’t know how to care for it. Our hair has been the butt of our black men and white American jokes. they told us that our hair is ugly. So we wanted to coniform so we decided to wear wig’s and weave’s to try to make our hair look better until we learn how to manage it. I never hated my hair and I have no self hate in my body, but people tend to think you hate yourself because you wear wis, braids and weaves. I’ve learned long time ago. Not to worry about what people think .they don’t even know my name so how can they judge me by what I wear on my head. people should take of themselves and don’t worry about someone else’s hair. there’s much bigger problems in the black American race. We need to play catch-up so we can have jobs and take care of our children. not sitting around worrying about follicles on another persons head. WAKE UP BLACK FOLKS. White men have had male pattern baldness forever and they are members of the hair club for men. And white folks especially their women don’t have time to discuss their hair. It a private chose and these women are loyal to their men and wouldn’t think about humiliation or of any kind to the white man. It’s to each its own.
