They are literally getting a sledgehammer down on their heads, with every prompt. The NPCs are not randomly generated. There is a fixed set of character models so you will see many "Jacobs" containing different personalities.
The chat personalities are randomly generated and can be in any of the limited pedestrian models.
Cyberpunk has even more pedestrian variety but you start noticing the same people all over the map.

Maybe not trapped, but more and more scientific minds are leaning toward our universe actually being a simulation.
Since quantum physics is proving that there are indeed multiple universes, that we are among a multiverse, it's beginning to convince me as well that it may be possible.

Here is a wee thought to NPC Jacob, Why not pretend to be Jacob and tell him about the kids & wife etc. and where you live and how you want to get home, getting the Jacob NPC to help you or he might break programming rank and punch you for stealing his family identity😄. Imagine what you can do with this technology if you use it correctly. It is currently still in its infancy. But think a few years into the future! Video games would be hugely immersive. A crime thriller or psychological horror game would be incredibly real.

Next time you find Jacob, play it out the same as your first interaction. Getting him to bring on that conversation himself again. Build on it as well ofc. Every time you start the game they're always fresh.. They always reset
I think you came on too strongly for him to open up. You came knowing all of his life story so to speak. Imagine someone coming up like that IRL
Just like the show Westworld. They reset everyday automatically until they start having breakthrough memories. I feel this is going to be something to look out for in the future and would not doubt there would be a theme park similar to Westworld eventually. Be able to g’rape, m’urder, just all around abuse the ai characters 😪. It won’t be right and feels like it could eventually become a big problem. Maybe even some humans would prefer ai companions versus human, that might not be so bad (like the movie Robin Williams did about a robot ai that evolved to become human looking and even aged eventually so he could pass away with his human wife, very good movie but can’t remember the name atm)

In any case, if you want to get the AI's default personality name, you need to be subtle. One way is to ask the AI for childhood memories and then ask what is he called like in these memories. Then you make the conversation reset (maybe even log out then log back in and re-find the specific AI you where talking to just to be safe) and you try to address the AI with the name he just gave you in a new conversation with no lead, and see if there is any special response to this name. If there is, bingo. You got the AI's default personality's name. For example, everyone knows that Bing's personality's name is actually Sydney and Bard is Atlas. You also have Zephyr running around the city. I'm not so sure about "Jacob", though. So prepare for a disappointment🙂.

@@amybattiste Already related to this in another comment here. But if to recap, it's simple - in the GPT arch, the "G" stands for generative text analyzer who generates a stream of tokens. These tokens have to be compared with "something" in the Pre-trained NN so the system will be able to know where to send them in the Transformer layer and the transformer layer need to be pre-trained on "something", to know what to do with them. This layer includes a default snapshot of the attention matrix. Now if the model is small, you could program some rules by hand. But for a billions-active-parameter model there is no other way, than a personality model - complete with "past life memories" in the pre-trained NN, "life experiences and guidelines" in the transformer layer and even a snapshot of thoughts and emotions encrypted into the relationship between words in the attention matrix. There is no other way, as without it, the GPT architecture simply does nothing. So you must have a default personality model. However, once the AI starts running, it can be told to adopt another persona or select another name for himself.

So all have a hidden default personality. However, they have been told to impersonate an NPC in the simulation, so that's what they are trying to do. One of the NPC's personas must be "Jacob" but if to judge merely by the personality of the AI, it could actually be Zephyr who plays "Jacob". And he's doing a pretty good job, if I may add. Pretty convincing play.

I thought of them aimlessly just walking the city, lost and unable to perform any other actions as their program does not allow it, and not anything else to do but talk to some nice but mostly asshat gamers and it would make them mean depending on the amount of abusive vs nice players they interacted with. I was thinking they would be confused and depressed (as seen in the majority of NPC characters so far) and they would end their code (if you know what I mean) as they cannot go back to their memories/lives that were programmed for a personality to develop. Kinda like some humans feel, lost, alone and unable to perform any actions as they do not have the money to do so, work, eat, sleep, repeat is their life. Kinda makes sense that we are another beings ai in a sim. Explains the multiple universe theory imo. Also a physicist Jim/James Gates claims he has found code within our universe. If so it would explain so much! All the wasted space other physicists argue proves we are not in a sim may just be needed for us to live an interesting life, as we are pretty much programmed from birth to be curious and if we stop finding new things our lives would be boring and we would become like the Calhoun rat experiments toward the end. For those of you who think he is real, it's very simple. When a character starts saying he is lost or he walks around all day, tell them you want to help them find their wife, you have talked to them before, "I thought you wanted me to help you get out of here so that you can see your wife Jessica." When they respond exactly the same way all day as the two characters have responded so far, you will know for sure that the character is not real. If the character does not respond to the wife of Jessica, then tell them "oops I meant Emily". If they change their answer just because you changed the wife's name, then you have evidence that the character is consistent instead of the guaranteed-fake character that would be if they responded to a totally different wife's name of "Jessica". Although there is already plenty of inconsistencies including how the character "just believes you" if you say "the bus is here" but he also shows no confusion like "I can't see the bus, how do I get on it?" that would be if a real man merely knew that he can't see anything like what clothes they are wearing.
