I don't think high expectations are necessary. It's not always about "disappointment" they way I've seen it... nor how I've used it myself, but I could've just been using it wrong... but sort of about the quality (or lack there of). Like, instead of saying, "Your waifu is trash" when they aren't utter garbage, you can call them mid, like Orihime from Bleach. Of course, it can also be used for disappointment, like when you order pizza but it shows up 3 hours later, cold, and wasn't good reheated, either. Very mid, at best. Or even just disappointing pizza that arrived hot & on time.
