- For the past four years, FRANCE 24 has been closely following the reconstruction of Paris's Notre-Dame Cathedral following the devastating 2019 fire there. The year 2023 is a crucial phase for the rebuilding, as the cathedral's spire, which collapsed in the blaze, is slated to rise into the Paris skyline once again by the end of December. Our reporter Julien Sauvaget met the craftspeople who are rebuilding the spire in its original form. The restoration work has also allowed experts to carry out archaeological digs below the cathedral's floor in search of clues to the history of the well-loved monument - with a few surprises in store.

The French can't control their workmen. They were told NO SMOKING but of course they all smoke like crazy, so soon enough a few cigarettes set the wooden roof on fire. I could have told you that was going to happen.
Some people think it is too expensive to restore Notre Dame. Compared to the cost of the destruction going on in Ukraine, the cost of rebuilding Notre Dame is peanuts.

I visited it once back in 2009 and climbed up to the top of the bell towers. I hope to be able to go back and see it restored in a few years.

To be chosen for such work is an honour and a privilege. The apex of the careers of every man and woman chosen. We will never know the identities of the craftsmen of 800 years ago but these 21st century craftsmen will or should be recorded for history. What a legacy to hand down to their descendants.

I was having my bathroom restored on the day of the fire. I put a copy of The Daily Telegraph showing the Cathedral on fire inside the new wall that was being rebuilt. One tiny little tribute to the wonderful people of France who are restoring this extraordinary building for the whole world. God Bless and love from the UK.
I am not French or ever been there, but worked in carpentry early and am fascinate by big Timbers and large structures. This has always held a special place in my heart.Very good job by the workers.

In his opening statement he called the fire "a real trauma for the French people". I am sure that is true. But it really underrates the event: people all over the world felt that too. And oddly, most of us that felt that (though not as badly as the French people I suppose) were completely confident that we could trust the French to fix it for all of us. They are such a passionate people - and Notre Dame du Paris is a part of their heart and home. And no one who is not French could feel that pain when it went down. So - I guess he was right. But so am I. They are fixing it for themselves - and the whole world.
Having visited the Notre Dame several times as a Dutch tourist, I was sad too.
I lived for years in Paris, and in my heart I am French. I cried and cried over this.

But Macron had to be stoped in extremis from organizing an "international architecture contest" for somethign more modern and more "universal" (understand not catholic) , the rumor says he had picked a schetch that looked like... a giant erected tube surrounded by two smaller globes. The bigest donator (Bernard Arnaud) threatened to pull his money off if he persisted. It was a huge fight to save the cathedral a second time.
I got to visit the Cathedral with my now wife as it was in 2016. We climbed the steps to the belltowers and saw the old spire up close. Such a marvelous building. It makes me happy to see her being reborn.
It’s amazing that the materials, techniques, and documentation all still exist with which to rebuild. Kudos to all the artists, engineers, carpenters etc who are contributing to this monumental effort!
I'm American and I'm so happy to see Notre Dame being brought back to life! I still shed tears every time I see footage of the fire. My heart was broken to see the devastation and to watch that beautiful and historic spire fall.

The fact that so much of this centuries old cathedral survived the fire is a testament to the engineering that went into it's architecture. Amazing.
There was a meme showing a post-modern ugly home "By MIT Proffessor of architecture" 2018 juxtaposed to a quaint thatched roof Cotswold Cottage "By Illiterates, 1500" to show that our forebears still knew what beauty was even when building an impoverished worker's cottage (that now go for 2.6 million quid!)... Architecture is the "Mother of the Arts" for a reason.
the good side of that fire is that the cathedral will have had a complete restauration, from basement to attic that it would never have had otherwise.

I am so glad that the choice to reconstruct the cathedral authentically was chosen. Personally for me there was no other option. But there were those at the time who felt it should be done in some dreadful modernistic design. Or … whatever. This building is iconic and the gargantuan efforts on the parts of all of the craftspeople are epic! Thanks to them all!
I don’t think the French Government was ever seriously considering a change to the Cathedral- I thought a concession might be made concerning some of the building materials- for instance, steel instead of oak for the attic- but they refused to do even that. Good for them!
I think it's a mistake not to add a fire prevention system while possible to do so. I also don't agree with rushing to complete because of the Olympics. Take however much time is necessary. Haste creates mistakes.
It would be absurd to try to make some new, modern version of the cathedral. Only a faithful restoration makes sense. I don’t mind if they add some hidden upgrades and improved materials to make sure it lasts, but it should be as faithful to the original as possible in every other way.

A compromise wherein steel is hidden inside the oak would be okay as long as it’s faithful in looks and appearance. That can be done these days. But otherwise I think it should be done as originally as possible. Any concessions to modernity should only be done to ensure it’s safety and longevity and should not be apparent in any way.
I would have switched out the lead coverings and added in some fire suppression systems and smoke detectors.
How on earth did thirteenth century builders create and lift this gigantic spire into place when we can see how challenging it is for us with advanced technology and machinery?!
The spire was added in the mid-1800s, replacing the first which was taken down in the late 1700s.

True. We cannot even imagine being there in the 11th or 13th century and seeing all the men atop, the wooden cranes and other experimental elements flying over people's heads. People sights and chanted words in their native language while others stood in awe of the construction then. Building something so complex must have been a great pain then as it is today. For us, watching it via the internet is one thing, but being there in person as it unfolds is another experience.
When people say in other blogs that the ancient or early 19th century people were naive or uncivilized. I really want to show them the reality of the magnificent work. There were men and women who created and had unparalleled skills, creativity and ingenuity way ahead of their time.

@@williamfindspeople4341 That's a rather questionable viewpoint:an enormous amount of work's gone into relearning these last 30 years, after the fires in Windsor and York, for starters. The French have just built an entire castle testing that knowledge, too. One thing we learned along the way is the importance of grain in sedimentary stone; the layers slowly deposited by the sea flake away if turned vertically.
Was surprised they had trouble finding wood beams, we are running short of trees that grow that tall. We are losing our old growth trees all over the planet.

I hope that the government documents the names of all those who participated in the restoration - especially all the artists and sculptors. In 1000 years, their names will still be remembered as those who rebuilt such a great monument. What an exceptional opportunity for them now and immortality through remembrance. Few in history have had such an opportunity. Good for them.

This is one of the most wonderful sights to see in my lifetime. I know exactly what I was doing when I heard that Notre Dame was on fire. It was unbelievable watching this beautiful building go up in flames I'm grateful to see that it's risen From the Ashes, with all the help. Thank you everyone who was able to help
A friend of mine has a lot of hand carved woodwork from the Ford Theater that was thrown away during remodel. His grandfather picked it up from the back alley
The day I saw Notre Dame burning, on the news, was a day that I shall never forget - I'm half French. I remember going to mass there with my Grandmere in the late 50s, I'm so glad that she never lived to witness the disaster that occurred! I look forward to seeing her Re - Birth. Such a magnificent building.
Norte Dame is like one of the wonders of the world. What a tragedy. It is a structural marvel. Thank you for the video, most of us are in the dark as to its repairs. A salute to the workers and to the people of France from USA that cares dearly.

Having had the honor to be able to visit Paris many years ago and to have stood at the base of this magnificent lady, I can still remember my heart sinking when I saw her burn on tv here in Canada...
...It is good that they are rebuilding the spire with all its defects and flaws.
We were there less than a year before the fire. And she burned on my birthday……4/15….. my heart absolutely sank. Will never forget that day. My #1 bucket list item was to see Paris. ✔️. New bucket list item……see the restoration. 💕
These workers are amazing! So talented! We all thought it was beautiful before the fire, we are going to be blown away when its done.
What a privilege, indeed an honour to be chosen to use one's professional skills to restore this beautiful piece of architecture. I walked the inside and the outside higher up back in the late '50s as a ten year old and have never forgotten the experience, Our family visited almost all of the great European cathedrals, Reims, Chartres and others farther afield but Notre Dame is the jewel. Needless to say I sent a contribution to the restoration fund from here in Canada because as a RCAF brat Paris was my home for four years.
Merveilleux! It's so wonderful to see that oak framework lifted into the sky. I visited Notre-Dame in high school, and I got a little choked up seeing the beginnings of the new spire going up.

I was in Paris in April 2019 at a conference and was not able to find time to visit Notre Dame - 2 days later was that terrible fire. I thought that I would never have the chance to see it again in its full glory in my lifetime. So much so that I wrote a lament inspired by that iconic photo of the spire collapsing. I am so happy that the restoration is proceeding so well, thanks to the efforts of so many craftsmen and women. Really looking forward to the opportunity to visit Paris again and this time to see Notre Dame in its restored glory.
To see how painstaking and time consuming the restoration is, makes the original feat all that more amazing. To travel back in time and see some of these things built would be incredible.

Sure, there wasn't a period of history without some construction or restoration work going on on the cathedral, but the bulk of it's been done in the Middle Ages and the 19th century -- until the present restoration.

Frontenac: Don’t underestimate the engineering technology and skill in the past and ancient past. Think of pyramids, of henges, of Roman design and engineering, of Gothic cathedrals. Avail yourself of thousands of articles, monographs and books available.
They were masters of that kind of work back then. Sometimes there were architectural challenges to overcome, but the actual construction used known techniques. We often struggle to replicate their work because many techniques have been lost; even with modern advantages.

As incredible as this project is today It is even more incredible what it must have been like building Notre Dame Cathedral over 800 years ago with no modern technology grant it took almost 200 years to complete.
And to have the wherewithal to plant more trees of the same type for such a disaster ,save these plans for future generations.

There are craftsman still capable of building such art that makes me happy.
France still has schools dedicated to teach 'old techniques' of construction to young generation due to the amount of heritage buildings there and the need of renovation.
These craftsmen are amazing, I could watch em for hours/days straight.
I will come and look. I had no plans to come to Paris, but I will come to see Notre Dame!

Yes, ... but we still don’t know how the fire started, and how, despite the fire surveillance systems and security personnel, who were constantly monitoring the Cathedral, The fire spread so fast and so hard...

In spite of the amount of work being done with traditional tools, It's truly a wonder how the original builders were able to assemble these elements, at such heights, without the use of modern cranes.

they said they wanted to rebuild it exaclty as before but that might be impossible as the wood grain from the 1300's had a much denser wood grain typically and was likely stronger. in standards handbooks they had to change the strength values of wood and they were downgraded as the early forests in the US had much denser wood grain. I'd suspect it's the same everywhere.

It's a tad bit different in France. A lot of the wood used to rebuild Notre-Dame is actually coming from forest planted exactly for that kind of buildings and to build old warships like a galleon. As demand for that kind of construction wood dropped in favor of steel, those trees remained and actually are at least 200 years old..... Wich make a huge difference with the construction wood used in the US who comes from rather young trees :)

Notre-Dame is the perfect example of what men (inclusive) can do when they decide to work together to the edification of the grandeur of its soul. A complete opposition to rioting, war-making, and any other kind of destructive drive. Thank you for this great monument to peace all over the world!
If it’s this difficult to raise these beams that weigh 5 tons to that height, imagine how difficult it must have been when the original masters built this thing. We now have modern cranes with superior lifting capacity, they had strong men with primitive cranes of some sort made of massive timbers. What an original feat it must have been.

I hope they are able to place fire retardant on the wood and fire sprinklers... with CCTV on other buildings to surveillance to prevent arson.

it took 182 years to build this cathedral, and now we are trying to restore it by 2024 when it caught fire in 2019. i wonder if our ancestors would be impressed, shocked, or both at the level of tech we can use now.
Well building the cathedral in the 13th century was already a technical prouesse compared to the centuries before...
Mostly, they would be touched and grateful that this science-fiction world (as they would see it) still loves the Cathedral enough to take the trouble to restore it exactly as they first built it, even going back to some of their techniques.

I'm so glad to have visited the Catherdral in 1992 while station in Germany. It was awe inspiring to see the building in all it's glory, Yes lets rebuild to original beauty, we have the technology to add hidden safety fire proofing, water sprinklers etc..one can add modern tech for preventive.

Unfortunately, since this video was posted, chief of operations, Gen. Jean-Louis Geogelin passed away a few weeks ago in the Pyrenees on a brief break from work. He did a tremendous job. May he be rewarded in Heaven. May Mother Mary comfort him and his famliy.

Wow! What an excellent video and focus of exchange and shared information. I have walked on the roof and stood under the bells of Norte Dame. I cried when I watched the flames consume a history of meaning and beauty. It is wonderful how so many people and minds have now worked together to both restore and amplify the skills and determination that created such a statement of beauty and knowledge and human skills working together.

I think that for anyone not involved in the investigation it would be irrationnal (and dangerous) to have any opinion.

Not a big fan of the spire as it was an add-on, and the source of the castatropic fire .. aditionally I can't fathom returning lead roofing (toxic) to the cathedral given the havoc the lead caused during and after the fire. The cathedral was a inovative product of its time, I don't see why its repair should not adopt inovative techniques such as copper roofing (non-toxic) and gluelamination oak beams (lighter) for the roof beams and the spire eliminated as not necessary (lighter) and simplier to the origional design. P.S. I also liked the idea of the glass roof to show off the beam works and eliminate the toxic lead and the useless spire.
A glass roof: maybe for just ANY modern building or other great rebuilding, but NOT for the greatest monument dedicated to the human soul knowing there is greater than any of us; it is meant to be appreciated from its inner sanctum, nothing overly done!
