  • I discuss the lives of ten Bernoullis' from the 17th-18th century, eight of which were mathematicians! Though I discuss some mathematical results, this is mostly about their lives, so thus not very math heavy.
ERROR NOTE: Nicolaus Bernoulli, soon of 1623 Nicolaus, was actually born 1662, and died 1716.
    01:20 Nicolaus (1623)
    02:35 Jacob
    06:05 Nicolaus (1662)
    06:39 Johann
    10:27 Nicolaus I
    12:52 Nicolaus II
    14:11 Daniel
    20:21 Johann II
    21:49 Johann III
    23:42 Jacob II

Wow, you did a great job figuring out this family tree. Thank you very much for this video!

I really hope you continue to make content. These videos are well done and very well narrated.

Thanks, jrok! I hope to. Personal / Work life has been very busy this past year, so I've just not had time to work on any content.

ha! I remember the first time I learned about a Bernoulli was when I was introduced to the concept of lift. Then I remember I later heard his name in the context of the St. Peteresburg paradox and I was like, "wait? Is that the same guy?!" and then I later heard about his name in the context of Bernoulli trials and I was like, "damn! This family be prolific!"

Second movement of Eroica is beautiful. Great videos. Thank you!
Will you do something with engineers? Where are many interesting in that field.

Great work. Remember reading on the elder Bernoulli bros quarrel (Jacob and Johann) in Isaac Asimov's history of science(the Brilliant but bickering Bernoulli Brothers)

It's said that they were all given a choice upon their 13th birthday: choose to be a zero or a hero (1).

Hey, nice video but just a heads-up: the top-right picture at 16:24 is of Hermann Grassmann, not Goldbach. That picture is based off a photograph of Grassmann (1800s) and there wouldn't have been any photos of Goldbach (1690-1764).

Thanks for making this. It is very good.
Just a note on the year of birth and year of death of the two younger brothers of Jacob Bernoulli (i.e. Nicoalus and Johann).
On the family tree chart in this video it is given that both Nicoalus Bernoulli and Johann Bernoulli were born in 1667 and died in 1748. Same year of birth and same year of death. Other sources differ on this. Just in case you might like to cross-check.

Oops! Yes that should be 1662-1716. I'll throw this into the Description. Thank you for pointing this out!

Bought a oil painting K Bernoulli.
    In Switzerland.
    Wonder are they related.
    No K here.
I have to add this to the link.
Karl was the last Bernoulli because his daughter Eva died 1991.

Oh shit there's more than one, I thought there was only Jacob who I also managed to think is Johann, i swear I'm better with numbers than with names 😂

@@moderndaymath thanks for the all the hard work, do u know about the cause of deaths? I'm very curious about what was killing them over the years. Any congenital diseases? Genius is not a coincidence, what dna studies, if any, have been done? Curious is an understatement...
      Lemme know? 🤔😁
