I'm thinking there's more to the story than "Pulmonary Edema"... Edema's usually clear fluid unless infected, and then it's green or yellow...
Lungs BLEEDING is usually something more akin to an embolism or thrombosis (clot or bubble in the veins) of the lungs causing a rupture at depth...
That would explain a "pang" of pain that might cause him to turn for the surface at first, but when it starts to subside, he could "think better of himself" and insist on going down... Only when he gets back to the surface is the full effect of the damage apparent... and THAT is why he suddenly looked panicked and couldn't breathe...
Free divers practice a process called "lung packing"... You take a full breath, as full as you can, and then you use your mouth to force down more air on top of it, physically pressurizing your lungs. It's okay in careful amounts... BUT it's also somewhat dangerous because you can cause physical damage if you take it too far too fast... At depth, pressure squeezes, so a minor tear might not bleed so bad, as the flesh is literally squeezed so the tear stay's small... BUT on the way back up, as the lungs expand back to their normal size, it just opens right up...
Not trying to be "mister friggin' wizard" and say this is the way it "really" happened... It's just one possibility, and I'm not sure about all the details or technical terms. I'm only fairly confident "Pulmonary Edema" all on its own wouldn't be that particular problem. ;o)

I wondered if anyone else was going to bring up the possibility of them being alive. I used to watch a lot of crime fiction like Law and Order and the USA Channel dramas. When Lazy brought up the lack of use of her National Health Card, my first thought was, "If she's in witness security, she might have a new one." Of course, it's probably nothing like that, since no one mentioned any kind of court case. Still, it could've been faked and she fled the building alive and well, with no one the wiser.
I'm not saying it's likely. Chances are the two of them died somewhere in that building. Just wanted to bring up the possibility of a happier end.

Regarding the mystery suicide, I strongly assume that they never left the building. Some place was apparently not searched...
It reminds me a little of a case in Germany, where a person was missing for several years and later it turned out that he was hanging from a tree and people had been walking under that tree without ever noticing him until his foot fell off due to decomposition. The bizarre part was that it was a very high tree and he climbed with the rope quite a bit up...
Another creepy and more mysterious case in Germany was when they discovered the identity of a skeleton and asked around for people that knew him. They visited the place he had lived for over a decade, yet no one remembered him! His family had no contact to him ever since he had moved out and the only persons that had direct contact with him had all died within the 10 years of his passing. A little fun fact about that case: he was identified by his Nokia phone. They really live up to the meme of being indestructible. The phone had been buried with him outside for all those years and they managed to get it running again!

You'd be shocked by how many of these cases aren't due to lack of caring, but more of the deceased being so far from where they lived and/or went missing from, the deceased's family thinking they ceased contact for personal reasons or having ceased contact long before then, and just police stupidity. One case that stands out to me for the last reason was how a deceased little girl was left unidentified for years because police claimed her own body's footprints weren't her footprints. I feel like there's definitely someone wondering about her out there, they just don't have a clue that's where she ended up.

Wet lung is not quite the whole picture, although yes there were fluid in his lungs due to the barotrauma. In the autopsie his lungs had signs of previous healed barotrauma that might have contributed to the fatality.

Freediver here, The general consensus is that he had previous tears on the lungs that hadn't been given adequate time to heal which contributed to the critical failure.
A big factor is the pursuit of records and downplaying personal health.
At the time people would get a squeeze, resulting in coughing blood from either damage to the trachea or lungs. You are supposed to rest but in high end competition there were a few who would hide it from comp officials so they wouldn't be disqualified from the rest of the event.
After this incident there was added measures for screening divers for squeezes and many us this as an example for upcoming divers of why squeeze injurys should never be taken lightly

I did some researching about the Taiwanese case and I found an article (in Chinese) where the ex husband was arrested for drunk driving 5 years after the disappearance which made the police reopen the case and also there are reports that the husband was abusive. She had 3 other children with him. They were separated at the time and he was paying child support. Another information I found was that the building has 16 floors but she got out of the elevator on the 11th floor and they could not confirm is she walked there or used her scooter. There is so much going on with case and hard to find reliable information on it in English. I will ask some Taiwanese people I know about this, maybe they can provide more accurate information. Lazy could make a long video about this mystery.

I also read/saw a documentary that women in that kind of situation just "disappear". That it's common for people to stage their own disappearances' to get out of abusive relationships, debt or to spare their family some sort of shame. Some just get fed up with the grind of their daily life and just leave, taking nothing with them so there are no ties and they can't be found. I'm not saying this happened in this case though it could be a huge possibility especially if the ex husband was abusive. Whatever it is, I hope she's okay and if still alive, living a better life.

It seems like a clear case of suicide/infanticide. I recall Lazy once covered a story about a woman in Southern China who was filmed dancing on her balcony ledge dressed entirely in red that one day fell. Supposedly, she was part of a cult. I mention this to illustrate contrast between a case I think was conspiratorial (routinely bizarre, dangerous, and superstitious behavior filmed by an unknown party that led to a death) and one that really isn't so strange. We can't disprove that the woman in this video "disappeared" because you can never prove something /didn't/ happen. However, the most simple explanation is that she committed suicide and the bodies weren't recovered: she removed her red jacket out of superstition associated with becoming a ghost and she wouldn't have taken off her shoes if she were planning to walk further than the 11th floor. She may have simply chosen the 11th floor to jump because it was high enough up to kill her and her child and easier to access than the roof deck of a commercial building, which tend to have precautions against jumpers. It may have been bellow a suicide net as well. I do appreciate the research you've done, but I think evidence that the woman was abused further supports her suicide-- abuse can rob people of the confidence or self preservation needed to escape their dire situation. Others in the comments have pointed out ways that jumpers bodies could never have been recovered. I think the idea that the bodies landed in a tree or on a ledge is way more believable that the honestly extreme amount of mental gymnastics needed to connect this to a conspiracy like fake suicide and disappearance. She wasn't a globe trotting billionaire or yakuza boss, just a superstitious mother who had lost all hope.
Finally, one thing I did wonder is if her superstitious behavior contributed to her choosing the 11th floor of the building to jump. Apparently, 11 corresponds to Chinese internet slang for single male and 11/11 is singles day. No idea if this actually applies to the woman's choice, but I thought it would be interesting to look into the numerology bc she seemed concerned with how she would pass enough to remove her red coat.

Here are some theories I can think of for the Liu and her daughter's disappearance:
    - In terms of cause, it sounds like it could be a psychotic break or episode, maybe her mental health was declining for a while.
    - Maybe she was afraid she'd lose custody of her child moments leading up to her disappearance
    - Perhaps she made some bad decisions and got stuck in a bad situation, so she decided in her mind it'd be best to escape now with her daughter
Regardless, none of these reasons would come from a mentally sound person.
As for what happened after she disappeared...
    - I'm wondering if she found someone who assisted her with her and her daughter's death? I don't know how taboo suicide is Taiwan, but if she was superstitious about the shoes and red clothes, maybe she found someone who was willing to help with her passing, and whoever helped buried her or got rid of the bodies once the deed was done.
    - I was also thinking maybe she changed her mind and committed the act in a body of water.
    - Maybe she was in a state of delusion while she planning the suicide, she wandered around the city, and someone sketchy found her and the daughter and killed them. I still think it was most likely a suicide, but this might explain why the bodies were never found.
    - If the area was surrounded by forests, perhaps they wandered there, and they died (either of starvation/hypothermia/dehydration, or an animal found them)
Note: I don't know all the details of the cause, as I've only watched this video, so I could be extremely wrong on some, if not all, all of these. I feel terrible for the father and relatives that still don't know what happened to their family, and I hope they find closure one day.

With regard to the story about the lady in Taiwan who disappeared with her daughter, I have a really awful, but unfortunately logical theory about this one: When you see someone go into a place like this, and never come out, look at anyone who left between when she came in and when they began searching , who left with any sort of container in which one could hide 2 bodies. Everyone.

      Agree.

    • @FrenkTheJoy
      @FrenkTheJoy 2 роки тому +57

Maybe there's more to the story than Lazy talked about, because he doesn't mention any investigation into the "friend" she was supposedly meeting up with, or how the father reacted. Did someone leave with a container or a large bag? What friend was she meeting up with? Was the dad/ex-husband concerned or upset? Was the divorce contentious, with him being aggressive? She looked kind of panicked in the photo, not like a woman who was resolved to commit murder-suicide, but like a woman on the run from something. And why WOULD she commit suicide with her young daughter?
If they never saw her leave, she would logically have to still be in the building somewhere, but also logically in that case someone would've noticed over the years. So I agree with your theory, that someone carried two bodies out of that hotel without being noticed, the question is just who and why.

I think it’s pretty selfish to attempt something very dangerous, such as the kayaking case, when you have young children who depend on you. I don’t think that’s the right time for self-fulfillment. Now his children have no father, and for what?

    • @Rage_Harder_Then_Relax
      @Rage_Harder_Then_Relax 2 роки тому +5

EXACTLY. It's the height of being selfish. But having children genuinly is a selfish act. People want kids because of their egos. "See I can have kids too"! There is no other reason people have them. It's not to repopulate anywhere. In the end they just want someone to look after them in their old age but the funny thing is having kids doesn't guarantee they will look after you when you're old or sick. LOL. In fact, many don't. That's why there is a growing need for workers in aged care and it keeps rising every year, especially in western countries. Then you have poor people who have many children and struggle to feed and clothe them and will stay in that cycle. No country should have over a billion (and counting) in population when poverty is so rife. There are many more people this day and age who actually don't have children and don't plan on having any. I'm one of those in my 50's. All it is doing is producing more adults to trash the planet. If you want kids, get a pet instead who are family anyway. I could go on further about our diets and what we don't buy to stop wrecking the planet more but that's not necessary here.

Yeah, I'm familiar with it... as in those are some of my favorite creepy pastas to read. Not as in I've actually tried it, for several reasons. 1) I'm 40 years old so I'm a bit old to be playing. 2) The closest tall building with an elevator is like 2+ hours away. 3) I don't want to end up like Ben.
But the real reason is, while I don't believe that the game is real, a tiny part of me does believe and is CONVINCED that I'll be the one person to do it correctly and up in Hell or something. How craptastic would it be to end up in Hell, not because you murdered a thousand babies but because you played a game wrong (or right). That would be like being in a super max prison for ripping tags off of pillows and mattresses.
