In this full-length film, I look at Francisco Goya's later works. At the age of 46, Goya suffered from a severe illness that caused loss of vision and hearing, tinnitus, dizziness, right-sides paralysis, weakness and general malaise. Although he recovered from a cerebral stroke which accompanied it, he went completely deaf. From this point on his work took a darker tone.
To understand Francisco Goya's Black Paintings, we need to understand how he went from a popular well-loved royal portrait artist to painting deeply disturbing imagery on the bare walls of his house in total isolation.
His darker work was never really seen in his lifetime. His series of etchings known as Los Caprichos was withdrawn from public sale for fear of attack by the Inquisition, and his deeply pessimistic 'Disasters of War' was so gruesome and radical it had to wait until his death to be published. Even his masterpiece, The Third of May 1808, was censored by the king and hidden away.
His wife and most of his friends were dead and he had become isolated. He was 73-years old, sick, and completely deaf. His long life was coming to a close… BUT he wasn’t finished yet. The man who had once painted crucifixions, miracles, saints, and priests, now painted terrifying, demonic, raw and brutal works - works without even a hint of God.
His last years were spent in isolation secretly creating some of the most horrific images in Western art, The Black Paintings.
Using footage from my earlier short films, Goya Part 1 and Goya Part 2, I have added about 25 minutes of new footage to make this full-length film.

Dark Goya (Full length): The later Works 2103pm 13.1.23 i doubt the images are seriously horrendous... works without a hint of goya? probably painted by that other wild man blake, then... who had claimed to have invented such a printing process.
Amazing
Your work and insight is a pleasure to view. You have my deepest gratitude for the dedication and time you give so freely to us, and want to thank you for sharing your gifts...we don't deserve it, but I do appreciate it!
This is the least we can do for you
Great episode!
This doc is a work of art for itself....
Thank you 🙏
Yes. It really is. For me, at least.
Wow. What an amazing documentary!
Yes so many times that I was like OK I’ll watch it later I couldn’t pull myself away
I totally agree with you.
you know the video is good when it's largely stuff you've already seen, but you are still enraptured by it. Goya was a magnificent artist, and you are magnificent for providing a gateway to his work for a wide audience. Wonderful work!
Thank you so much 🙏
Goya - one of the few artists who get a content warning at the start of the video
The picture with the drowning dog is officially one of the saddest paintings I have ever seen.
It is
This channel single handedly got me interested in art. Your breakdowns help me understand just how amazing these works of art really are. I hope to visit a museum soon to see some of the greats in person. Pretty sure I’ve watched all your videos and enjoy every single one. Thank for all you do!
Glad to hear it!
Such a well made video. Beautiful work.
my brudda nice to meet you here! congratulations on your collaboration with Shein
Thank you 🙏
I watch these videos with my kids. Goya is my 10 year old daughter's favorite artist. She is very intrigued by the dark art he created.
bf and i recently found this channel and we simply can’t thank you enough for the work you put into this! you’ve really jump started our love for older darker works of art!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks 🙏
I like how you also mentioned your boyfriend haha
This is great! I was in Madrid recently and saw the Black Paintings and Goya's other works at the Prado Museum. Seeing these works in real life affected me unexpectedly as I never realized just how rare it is to see paintings with dark themes and palettes. I was also surprised at how big or small some of the pieces were and just going into the room where the works were kept was lit with low and moody lighting. Before my trip to Spain, I had little idea of how much of my art knowledge was surrounded by Spanish Art (Goya, El Greco, Picasso, etc). I realized that now that I am older, I can empathize with these works with complex themes even more so now than when I first saw them on a printed art book. Thank you for this video, James. Just know that your hard work is greatly appreciated.
Thanks 🙏
What we get from Goya is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. 200 years later and humanity still hasn't evolved. Shame on us.
I've been aware of Goya my whole adult life. I was never that enraptured with him. Now I see him in a whole new light and just how my modern life preferences blinded me to this "The last of the old masters and first of the moderns" artist for the ages. I didn't want this video to end. It added a new chapter to my appreciation for art and I'm grateful.
Thank you 🙏
When I was young I used to eagerly anticipate every episode of Kenneth Clark's tv episodes on art and of coarse his famous BBC series "Civilization". Your channel is carrying on the high standards that parallel Clark's presentations and we the viewers are all the better for it. Thank you.
That’s such a huge compliment! thank you 🙏
I loved those also! Still do. But this channel is a serious addition. So grateful!
Can't tell you how much I've learned about the history of paintings from this channel. Thank you sir!
You are very welcome
When I saw Goya's paintings at the Prado, the one that struck me the most was, like you, the drowning dog. Thank you for this magnificent documentary! (And for all the others as well, of course!).
Thanks for the lovely comment 🙏
This is a fantastic conclusion to the Goya deep dive. You have me convinced there was no insanity - it just looked like it because the rest of the world was so insane and he was clear sighted.
It was interesting to note that in the Third of May 1808 painting the colors of the focal character and the lamp mirrored each other. Another way he subverted the martyr image.
Don't think I've ever been so fascinated by an explanation of printing techniques. All the videos on this channel are just mesmerizing to me, and have really broadened my appreciation for these artists and works. Thank you!
Great to hear!
Truly, Goya was doing vent art before it was cool.
I gotta say, man, you've exposed me to a new way to appreciate art. I always had a hard time "getting" art that seemed both obscure surrealism or hyper realistic. But because of how you explain these artworks, I can see that there's almost always something there that actually means something and isn't superficial.
Its rare that a youtube channel changes my answer to the question "Do you like X", but from someone who knew 0 about art, you really have inspired a love in the subject from me and many others. Thanks again.
Your videos are extremely useful to anyone who enjoys and wants to learn about this visual art. I've discorvered the works of Francisco Goya because of your two other videos about him.
And I was mesmerized by his work: : "Los Caprichos", "The Third of May 1808", "The Disasters of War", and "The Black Paintings". I don't know much about art, other than the things we learn in school: "Da Vinci is the the greatest painter eho has ever lived - just look at the Mona Lisa"; "Michelangelo was the artist who painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling".
And because of your videos, I've learnt about artists such as: Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, Basquiat, Hieronymus Bosch, Botticelli, Caravaggio.
And in this craving to learn more about art I'm currently reading "The Story of Art" by E. H. Gombrich. Thank you very much for your content, which provides, in a really appealing way, the necessary knowlegde to understand and to be curious about art.
Love that book - it’s my “bible” - thanks for watching 🙏
Goya is one of my favorites, and I enjoy these long form analyses of his life and painting. Many thanks.
My pleasure!
I have seen many documentaries about Goya, since I was always fascinated by his work - but this the very best I ever have seen! Thank you for this work of art! Your ability to feel Goyas feeling!
Wow, thank you!
Your first video inspired me to go see his black paintings in Spain. I leave next month. This is perfect timing. Thank you
Your section on the the dog painting moved me to tears with your summary. You are a masterful orator and narrator, what you have achieved with this video is utterly incredible and inspiring. Thank you for your continued hard work.
This level of continuity and academic excellence is a gift
What a fabulous documentary - connecting the history, context, and motivations of the artists all in one go, while being able to understand the paintings. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really like how you are able to bring the stories behind these paintings to live. Makes them even more impressing and immersive (or in this case devouring).
Fantastic documentary. The best art channel on youtube.
quality of your videos is unparalleled. fantastic deep dive. thank you for your work.
Much appreciated!
James, this video gave me chills down my spin especially when you were explaining the picture of the drowning dog.
James Payne is the David Attenborough of paintings
I really got into art because of you, thank you! Your break down of the garden of earthly delights is forever etched into my very being
That makes me very happy - thanks for the comment 🙏
Goya is one of my favorite painters! Great job!
Mine too!
This was amazing. I’ve always been fascinated by Goya’s last works but I didn’t know the intense history behind them. Fantastic video
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this channel! I've never been to an art gallery or museum before, so these videos bring the experience and closeness to art that everyone should have. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
I have watched lots of these. They make a lot of paintings make sense.
Thank you so much for this !!
hell yeah! been wanting this since you’ve mentioned goya’s works across multiple videos 🤩
Hope you like it!
This is amazing. Thank you so much for this series!!
I had to slow the playback speed to 0.75 to fully appreciate the descriptions and works, but I have to say, done with the integrity it deserves. I find myself loving and appreciating Goya's final master works more and more. I so wish he would've have given these works fearless titles. We are indeed lucky they survived. Thank you for this wonderful presentation. Bravo!!
I love your longer videos it’s a wonderful documentation of the artist’s work and gives it the time it deserves!
Extraordinary work. I learned so much. Thank you! Keep them coming!
1 billion thank you for all your videos. The work you do is priceless and amazing
One of the most interesting artists of all time.
Wonderful and thorough analysis - always looking forward to your videos!
Fabulous documentary and wonderful commentary. Thank you.
Can’t say enough thanks for this documentary, the amount of time, information, time, care and love you invested it is priceless. Thank you very much!
Thank you for your amazing work!
Thank you so much, James, for creating this channel and sharing your knowledge with us
A video worth the long waiting! I was so impressed by the scope and the depth of your analysis of Goya’s Black Paintings👍👍👏👏
This is so enlightening and engaging - I look forward to every episode and this may be my favourite so far
ABSOLUTELY amazing documentary! Thank you so much for making this!
So captivating and so, so well done. By you, Mr. Payne, and by Goya. Thank you very much. I´ve seen all of those paintings many times and still... I had to hold my tears several times.
It always felt like The Black Paintings were one last sputtering remark of a dying old man. His pessimism surprises anyone who comes in contact, expecting a sweet, dumbed man. Instead, he expresses his dissatisfaction of the world and how his life was a first seat view on how it came to be that way. His wit and insight are made ragged by the exasperation of his age. Yet one walks out of a conversation again feeling like they've seen some hidden side of the world only seen by the glimmer of elderly wisdom and the words that spring from within it
Amazing work! Thank you for what you do, truly.
Outstanding work as always.
Congratulations.
Wow, I have no words, only tears
Thank you for your work, it helps me drastically to understand art mode deeply
Another fantastic video!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m fortunate enough to live in Spain and get to see some of the works mentioned in the video in person, but never have I truly understood them until this video. Can’t wait to go back with a new set of eyes. I can’t thank you enough
You expleins very well and communicate various aspects. Thank you Judith
Thank you for this. Another great video. You've really enhanced my enjoyment of art
A work of immense effort and affection. Phenomenal job sir

Thank you so much fOr doing these amazing videos, they give so much to my life
This video Is so touching. Thanks a lot, I love your channel, keep going!
so grateful for this upload
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all the hard work that goes into compiling these wonderful films. Honestly, I didn’t really know anything about art save a few famous paintings that everyone’s heard of. Surprisingly, this medium is delightful and you’ve really helped me to appreciate it in a real way.
Great work making this video. Thanks!!
Just wow, amazing coverage… seeing it one time is just not enough
Thank you very much
Thank you so much! This was really illuminating. I have seen the painting of Goya with his doctor many times at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
A total masterpiece. Thank you for your work.
Love your channel! An art by itself.
Next time I'm lucky enough to view any painting that's been mentioned on your channel, I'll be able to address it with so much knowledge.
I love art and seeing a channel that's so devired to it is incredible. Please don't stop!
That was amazing. I did not know how incredible Goya's work is, I had no idea, I really re-evaluated his art thanks to you. Thank you so much for making this video!
Thank you for another brilliant video. Beautifully worded and well-edited as always.
Goya’s works are so visceral. The blood and anguish practically drip off of them. I’m amazed at how he was able to create such depth and specificity of emotion with so few strokes in his later paintings. I agree, it truly takes a master to do that.
You are a treasure to my art education and journey, thank you so very much for your hard work.
Truly a film by a person dedicated to its craft, keep up the good work!
Hello, huge thank you for the work you do. You managed to create a channel, where no matter how little one knows about a subject, they can appreciate the vast knowledge and insight being conveyed. Today I watched the last remaining video, can't wait for more!
This is an envitably one of the best on Goya's work I have even seen.
With great appreciation and respect for your presentation.
The single best thing I've ever seen on UA-cam, a privilege to watch.
wow, thank you so much for this master class!
This video was excellently made! Fantastic work as always. :)
Wow, what can I say. Thank you, thank you. This was a masterful, insightful, presentation/interpretation of Goya's final years in art.
Excellent videos. I show them to my art students and they really like them. Thank you for your work.
Inspirational. Thank you for your work!!
Thanks so much for posting
Thank you for helping me appreciate art. I know love going to all kinds of art museums directly because of your influence.
A mastetpiece of a video, like always. Loved it. Love the way you narrate the artists life and its effect on to their artistic expressions. Liked, subscribed and all the rest. Waiting for more
this was fascinating, beautifully executed, and explained. thank you for your important work 🤍
Admirable work. So helpful to many people. Thank you.
An amazing video thank you James. Haven't enjoyed UA-cam video so much in ages.
Thank you for the long version. I love Goya's late works. Your content is very educational and entertaining.
Thank you very much!
This was incredible. Thank you
I'm sad by noticing the same issues from more than 200 years ago are still the same. Ignorance, dirty people, etc. Today I found a sofa by the beautiful lake I walk around everyday. Packages of snacks, plastic, but a damn sofa? Today is a day of hopelessness. So be it.
Thanks for the wonderful work you put in your videos to make us think and admire.
Thanks James for another great video!
Thank you very much for this video, it is amazing!
Thanks for this video! I listened to it at the Prado last week while looking at its magnificent collection of Goya paintings. Did the same with your video on Guernica while I was at the Reina Sofia. Both added an incredible amount to my appreciation of these works.
And excellent and highly interesting and enjoyable video! Thank you so much for all of your hard work!
Excellently executed video, a joy to watch! This channel is amazing and among the best! Great editing, very interesting information and great narration! Congratulations for making such a great video!
Best wishes 👍🏻
