@Tattle Boad I don't think humility should involve self-hatred or that pride should involve arrogance. There's a self-esteem issue here.

    • @thisisntallowed9560
      @thisisntallowed9560 4 роки тому +34

@Tattle Boad Pride is not opposed to humility, I don't see it like that. Arrogance is opposed to humility.
I also don't understand why you're suddenly talking about egoism?
My idea is more that arrogance is pride without self-esteem, and self-hatred is humility without self-esteem.

    • @thisisntallowed9560

@Tattle Boad Do you think someone can be confident without being arrogant?

    • @thoughtaddict2739
      @thoughtaddict2739 4 роки тому +14

@Tattle Boad "{According to the Oxford Dictionary, pride is defined as “the quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance; whereas," confidence is defined as “a feeling of self-assurance arising from an appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.”}"
      www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=haitiantimes.com/2016/10/23/pride-vs-confidence-whats-the-difference/%23:~:text%3DAccording%2520to%2520the%2520Oxford%2520Dictionary,one%27s%2520own%2520abilities%2520or%2520qualities.%25E2%2580%259D&ved=2ahUKEwjhhoO0h4jrAhVBKH0KHSBUCHwQFjABegQIEBAG&usg=AOvVaw1lvRfH5qoWHd18_DBxFC6_
Therefore there is a difference between pride and confidence. Confidence is a feeling and understanding of your worth in abilities where as pride is thinking of yourself as superior. One can NOT have pride without confidence, but one can have confidence without pride.

That's just one of many things I liked so much about Iroh, he was well rounded and understanding but also knew when it was time to give up on something that could bear no fruit from your efforts. Some people, no matter how hard you try, are so set in their ways that they end up destroying you with them if you stick around for too long. A good example is from Avatar Kiyoshi with the Earth kingdom ruler (sorry forgot his name). She warned him time and time again that he would be destroyed if he did not change his mind. Now I have to give him props, not only did he stand up to the Avatar but also for standing his ground even as it fell out from under him. That takes balls! But it shows just how foolish being so devoted to someone or something to absurdity can be. Iroh knew this... RIP Mako, you are greatly missed.

      That resonated.
I met a lady who lived on portobello road in London back in the day.
She gave me some advice on perspectives.
When you enter into an argument with someone.
Imagine that the two of you are sat on opposite sides of this massive beach ball, sat in a deck chair.
The ball is so big you can’t see the other side or someone on the other side.
One side of the ball is blue.
      One is orange.
You can sit in your chair on your side of the ball and argue ad infinitum over the ball being blue!
      But.
      For them. It’s orange.
      It’s blue!
      It’s orange!
      ....
It is only when you get up out of your chair and walk around to the other side that you can see the situation from the other persons perspective.
And in doing so, getting up, moving around and seeing it from the other persons side, you also free up your chair for others. ✌️

@@ilke3192 kinda reminds me of how people speak of me when i act. I don't rush into things, i take my time and think, ponder, i ask questions and seek external knowledge instead of any self truth i can tell myself. People say i am scared but really i'm not sure of anything, cautious or uncertain you could say, how can any person be so? I don't jump into relationships, i wanna know the person i'm interested in as much as possible (those that rush into love almost always end up heartbroken or alone).
Let's say you never doubt your skills in an area of life, then you fail. You failed because you thought you could do no wrong. You didn't wonder if another person knew better and could give a better solution. Now lets say another man is confident in his skills and attempts a similar thing, but instead of going in like he knows everything, he finds that he can't find a clear solution from his experience. He accepts that he is uncertain, it's human to be so, and tries to understand more in order to resolve the problem. Even if he fails it was not due to his ego, but rather his acceptance of uncertainty offered a better result(albeit never a gaurantee).
To never be cautious is to be a fool, When i have been uncertain of things, i seek to relieve myself of such feelings by seeking wisdom, and even when i fail i don't feel bad because i tried the best i could, i wasn't stupid in my approach to life's occurances. But when i was shamed into being "scared" and i went in head first i almost always failed. Gotta learn from past mistakes or you'll forever repeat them. As was said in the video, the US has a terrible human mentality when it comes to politics, there is no middle ground, no cooperation, no compromise, no humbleness in ones beliefs. There is democrats or republicans, liberals or conservatives. This YES/NO mentality rejects any chance of deeper understanding, of better decisions. Those that claim independent thought are put down as stupid or ignorant on both sides as well.
Foolishness can adopt any form imaginable, and it's up to people to figure out when they are being foolish and when humility is necessary. The reason such ideas like humility is almost always beneficial, or an excess of certainty leads to unseen consequences exist for so long because they have truth to them. Being wise isn't about knowing everything there is to know, it's to know oneself, to know one's lack in anything, and the understanding that there are things you should seek external knowledge from, to be uncertain but for the reason of being better than the certain man who can never learn.

U know, now that I think of it, iroh is master of all 4 elements by using tea. The leaf is like anything in the world, its connected to the earth. While the water helps to navigate the leaf, the fire helps the water to extract the juice from the leaf and infuse it with the water (think about this one when iroh study the water benders and created the technique on how to redirect lightning) . And air helps to cool down the tea to the perfect temperature for him to drink it, basically all 4 elements in one . The avatar isn't the only one that can master all the elements.
EDIT: Most people dont know this but uncle iroh is one of the most powerful and skillful benders of the series because of his knowledge of all 4 nations.Think about it this way, you were born with a type of bending ( doesnt matter which one) whats your goal ? to train, to learn your culture, become stronger with each passing day and be the best. Now whats the goal of the avatar? not just master all 4 elements, but to learn and knowledge other cultures, techniques, different fightning styles etc, what stopping you to do the same ? who says thats only for the avatar to do ?why stop on what u learn of your own culture and not gain more knowledge from others. If you have an open mind you can see all the posibilities beyond your limitations. You can get more stronger, smarter, faster, wiser. You can learn weak spots of any bender and use anything around you for your advantage. I think this is what Iroh was trying to teach zuko in the first and second season.
EDIT#2 - this came from random users from the fandom. Iroh basically has all the elements in one. Water - how redirect lighting.
Earth - Mastering Neutral jing. Rember when he gave himself up in book 2 and escape during the solar eclipse? He waited for the right moment to strike. (Neutral jing is the Key of earthbending)
Fire - He mastered Lightning and knew the all secrets of firebending by the dragons.
Air - Breath of Fire. Airbenders can keep their body temperature warm by crontolling their breathing. Thats why we never saw aang used a coat in book 1. By iroh studying the airbenders, he created the breath of fire, adding to the fact that fire comes from the breath and not muscle.

Pride is never something that you want. It's okay to feel good about what you accomplish, but not pride. Pride, at it's root, is enmity. It is enmity towards others, a belief that you are better than them, that you are better than everyone. There is a reason why pride always comes before the fall, because if you were humble, if you had the humility to learn from others, to see yourself as just one man in a sea of humanity, and that everyone around you has something they can teach you, you would never have put yourself into a position where you could fall.
If you are willing to learn from others, to humble yourself, and become the student, there is nothing that you cannot accomplish, nothing you cannot learn, nothing you cannot do. The moment you believe yourself better than others, though, is the moment that you have truly lost yourself.

You're quite right, about the natures of pride and humility. It took me a long time to learn this, but as time went on Iroh has become more and more of an inspiration to my way of thinking and the kind of person I want to become.
I'm still pretty prideful, but I try not to discount the value of others' opinions. The wisdom of others has been the primary way in which I have learned, as I am also cautious and prefer only to act when I have prepared to the point of surety in whatever I do. Of course, this in and of itself led to a degree of stagnation within myself for a long time. Instead of water, I became like a rock; strong at face value and hardy, but also rigid, inflexible and brittle. Thusly I began to erode.
Anyway, the point I initially wanted to make when I began typing this comment is that both Iroh and yourself seem quite wise, and I thank you for this perspective. Best wishes, ma dude.

You're also right that it's hard to control that pride in ourselves. It took me a long time to even recognize it, let alone control it. There's times still, that I don't control it so well haha. But we live and learn, and do our best :^)

Something that occured to me only recently in my lectures at school. So many of my peers are almost afraid to answer a question or ask one, lest they be thought stupid in the asking or answering. Yet answering right or wrong does not make out anything against one's intelligence. Being wrong is an opportunity for clarification and learning. There is no shame in being wrong. And if you truly wish to learn, you must first accept how little you know. To learn is to be humble.

    • @thewretchedpleb7484

@@jessesmith4167 while I can understand why one may be hesitant in asking or answering a question, I agree with you. "He who asks a question is a fool for 5 minutes. He who keeps silent is a fool for life." I think that was the adage at least. Adage, proverb, not sure which is the more applicable term there.
It can be difficult or even painful at times to learn some of life's lessons. In the case of not asking a question during a lecture, I guess the peers who stay quiet may not want to stretch the lecture into an even longer one. In other cases, it may be that they simply don't want to appear stupid or inadequate to the rest of the class. I was the goofy nerd through most of my time in school so I didn't often bother with such thoughts. Added bonus; sometimes the question or answer may stump the teacher and help them gain a new understanding by facing the same problem from a different perspective. Even better, when the learning is reciprocal, I'd say.
