The heart doesn't know the difference between fat and muscle. To carry 400lbs is pretty nutty. RIP

Ronin That's partially true, it's something doctors like to say. The other obvious part is these guys are taking large quantities of synthetic hormones that dramatically alter their physiology and causes far more stress than normal. I have personally known several guys that were over four and five hundred pounds, just naturally big and overweight of course and probably won't live to be a 100 but they were way healthier than these guys.

Ronin the heart knows it has to supply oxygen to muscle, the more muscle you have the harder it has to work, so there is a difference

Met him 20 years ago when I was 20 years old. It was a GNC opening on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Nobody was there. First bodybuilder I ever met. As it was, I met Ronnie Coleman for the first of many times, one week later. As far as Greg Kovacs, he was one of the coolest, friendliest, and most genuine human beings I’ve ever met. There was one groupie who he talked to for a few minutes and then she left. I had about 90 minutes to talk Bodybuilding and drugs and food and training with a pro. He Talked with me candidly for over an hour about all things bodybuilding. He was HUGE. He was personable and hilarious to boot. Much respect to you Greg for encouraging a young kid that would later win an NPC regional and qualify for nationals (2002). Your advice on drugs actually played a role in my decision NOT to pursue BB at the National Level from that day I qualified. I’m not saying I knew the man - I am saying he was honest and forthright with a young kid who he had ZERO vested interest to help, who, he helped anyway. Thank you Greg, R.I.P.

I remember meeting him when I was a Marine at Cherry Point, NC back in '99. I'm a huge guy 6'2" and was about 225 when I met him. I have really big hands but when I went to shake his hand it completely engulfed mine. I couldn't believe his size! It was like looking at a real life super hero or a cartoon character. He was a really nice guy and I hate to hear about his passing. I know he took like 2 or 3 times the amount of steroids that normal bodybuilders were taking at the time. I'm sure that was the main contribution to his heart problems. RIP!!

I used to train at the same gym as Greg in St Catharines Ontario. He was also one of, if not the strongest bodybuilder that ever walked the planet. First time I saw him in the mid 80's it was at Popeyes gym in Kitchener Ont. he was there watching a bench press contest, after the final lift of the competition Greg ask if he could try the weight and in street clothes and no warm up proceeded to do 15 reps with what I believe was around well over 400 lbs. He was no where near as big at that time either but very strong. He could have been a great power lifter but just loved bodybuilding.

Yeah he was at Fulton's and also at World Gym. I've seen him easily rep 495 for 12 on the incline press. One time a guy had just finished his last set of squats with 315, and GReg asked him if he could have the rack whereupon Greg proceeded to shoulder press the 315lbs for 8 pretty easy reps.

I watch a lot of your videos nick. There are several recurring trends I have noticed. Relatively premature death due to heart complications arising from myriad hormone and steroid usage. Illegal and addictive drug use, particularly pain killers, occasionally contributing to premature death and lifestyle collapse. Frequent severe injuries resulting in surgery and often permanent damage. Repeated financial and/or personal life collapse over the course of athlete's life.
Really hope future generations of bodybuilders and power lifters can move towards smarter healthier lifestyles, if thats even possible. The mantra of "gains at any cost" truly does have serious costs involved.

Around 2009-2011 I started seeing Greg working out at the gym I was going to all of the sudden in Niagara Falls. He was still enormous! His forearms were as big as my gf quads.
Kept to him self usually. I got in his way a few times, he was polite and seemed like a nice person. He didn't look healthy tho, his skin was reddish-grey looking, always had a bead of sweat going. 42 yrs old tho, probably never or very rarely came off gear this whole time.

Checking in from Canada. Nice to see that you did a little piece on Greg. He was one big dude. There are some better pictures of him online. When his waist was slimmer and his conditioning was tighter. Before the Palumboism set in.
You should do a piece on his friend and training partner Scott Milne. I worked with him on a few movie and commercial shoots. One day about 4 years ago he was no longer competing. He was weighing 335 and was showing veins in his abs still. The wardrobe lady brought out a tape measure to size him up...his waist was 36 inches and his chest was 62! SHe stands 6' 3". He had been 360lbs in the off season before I know that.Possibly more as well. Competed around 300lbs.His first show at 21 years old he was 268 if I remember right. We were on a Budweiser shoot and he was getting ready for it. Director almost died when he saw his arms in his football gear lol. He said they were taping 24 at the time. I would agree too, not my first day around pro's either.I see guys online say Scott was 245...uhh yeah OK LOL. A very serious car accident ended things for him right before hitting the Texas Pro. He had serious damage to just about everything. Doc said his size saved him. Like what you're doing with your channel. Keep it up.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 6 років тому

jmarcguy Yeah, I remember them too. Especially the before Muscletech and after Muscletech pictures. The fucked up thing, is people actually believed the ads. Similar to how Cell-Tech was initially two times more effective than creatine monohydrate, then it became four times more effective, the last and most outrageous one was when it went to eight times more effective. I stopped buying anything from Muscle tech (They had deals time to time), as I could not stand the lies anymore. That included their MRP's and protein bars.
MusceMag kept on claiming they had nothing to do with Muscletech, but I never believed them, especially not just the ads, but the so called articles in the magazine always promoted Muscletech as the closest thing to anabolic steroids, but the safe alternative. What a crock of shit.

I really wonder what might have been different in Kovacs career had he taken a different path in 1996, right after he won the Canadian Nationals. He actually looked decent there at 308 pounds on stage. He had flaws, poor outer sweep to his quads, smallish calves, and his waist was starting to expand. Nothing had gotten out of hand yet however. Had he stopped pushing the doses for more size and instead focused on building up weak points, more vastus lateralis to enhance his quads sweep, calves, back details etc... But not pushed for more overall size, I bet his bodybuilding career would have gone better. He already had more than enough overall mass for 4 bodybuilders.

Good vid. I noticed Aaron Madrone at 1:15. Wonder what happened to him...there was also another guy around that era who had the same hairstyle as him but did more modeling...competed as well. Also wonder what happened to Mark Dugdale. Of course age plays a role so these guys aren't seen in the mags anymore and fade out but curious to know what they're up to these days. Troy Alves too. Always liked him.

jpratx Think you mean Darin Lannaghan. If we're talking about the person..He told that he did not want to endanger himself anymore with all the drugs and roids in his system. Thought he went back to being a welder or something.

Nick I'm telling you it's LUI disliking your videos. Did you see he copied your "most vascular bodybuilder ever" video? He used the exact same title and thumb!

There's a fairly well known interview with Nasser in Musclemag who talks about Greg. They used to room together on the road and Nasser tells about what a mess he was. He was always getting into it with his wife, and whatever things he was putting in his body made him defecate almost constantly. In his bed, on his feet, everywhere. Very sad situation and what his lifestyle did to him definitely ended his life so young. Granted, being so big probably did play a role in his heart problems, but according to Nasser the guy had to actually wear diapers. Unreal. As usual, great video man.

Greg ate 15,000 calories of a farm boy's diet everyday. He was beyond a doubt one of the strongest bodybuilders ever. The strain on his body was too much for his heart. I have an old bodybuilding mag titled: "Breaking the 27-inch arm barrier" in which he was billed as 6'3 (his real height) and 27 1/4 inch arms (not accurate). I can remember getting home and trying to binge to hit the calorie range he was used to, but I could never quite do it. Worthy bodybuilder or not, this guy was one heck of a site to see!
