I love watching Mannarino. As you say, the majority of the modern players play very similar. Mannarino is so different. In the 80's and 90's there was a bigger variety of playing styles. Guys like Santoro, McEnroe, Connors. On the Woman's side they play even more similar, Ons Jabeur & Su-Wei Hsieh being exceptions. Medevedev also has an Interesting style and Tomic had an interesting style too.

Love this! I also play an “old school” style but that’s because I was a pro player in the early 80’s. I have a small take back on my forehand and hit the extremely flat and precise. My ball skids and it causes big problems for young pros today when I compete at ITF Futures. I haven’t won a match yet against the pros but I’ve broken their serves a few times and I win approximately 30 points per match with big forehand winners. I’m not winning enough points in a row to win more games but that’s coming!!! In March I play 4 more pro tournaments at age 59!!! I’m here to kick the young uns butts! And enjoy myself too! Thanks! Very interesting observation. Now Djokovic, at least in my opinion, can draw upon the skills of both the "old school style" and the modern player. Now add unbelievable athleticism, consistency, and reliability, and with his overall achievements, he's the GOAT. To be sure, some of his on-court behavior is a radical departure from other legends like Federer and Nadal, the both of whom I admire equally, although for different reasons. However, Novak's game and record achievements are like no other. I continue to be amazed what he can pull off at his age. It is because of his unprecedented skillset that I enjoy watching him play more so now at this late stage of his career. Again, just my opinion and observations here. But I respect yours too, even if they're entirely different from mine. Our commonality in the tennis community is about the enjoyment and advancement of the game. Happy AO to all.

At 36, to win three successive five setters against younger opponents is one helluva of feat. Mannarino makes playing tennis so ordinary. He doesn't take too much time to serve and neither he bends his body as much. His shots are very deceptive and he finds incredible angles and depth in shots.
I am sure Novak will never take him lightly when he faces him because Mannarino is a much better player today than he was in the past. His game has improved with age and he has won more tournaments when he is old than young.

Similarly to manna, nole also relies on the power of his strings (hybrid setup) to generate pace on his flat shots. Gut/mono and low tension mono strings bring both control and pace, although manna's string tension is taken to the extreme..
You'll see that, on hard courts, nole often takes control of the point with his down the line flat shots (while manna mostly hits cross) with less preparation than the average modern player.
The outcome of this match will rely on nole's ability to attack manna's lifeless shots which I think he'll manage much better than shelton thanks to his much cleaner/more reliable shots.

I watched the whole tiebreak between Rybakina and Blinkova and it was quite painful. Out of 42 points there were maybe 5 or 6 exciting rallies with quality finish, but most of the tiebreak was unforced errors, it was unbelievable, especially Rybakina, she was so tight on every match point she had, apart from the last one, where Blinkova played some really amazing defense. But Rybakina really didn’t deserve to win. And the whole match was not the highest quality, both made almost 50 UEs in less than 3 hours on court.
For me the most exciting match was Zverev against Klein, who was very close to an upset. But despite losing his attitude and effort was amazing - also with a lot of errors, but he played super attacking tennis and Zverev said he was only a spectator at times. If he wasn’t serving great that day, he would have lost.

@@K4R3N It’s the pressure of the moment, so I wouldn’t blame them, I just don’t know why people think it was the best match at AO so far. Without the super long tiebreak and the fact Rybakina lost no one would talk about it.

i'm going to work on emulating his fh but that grip is even more radical than i used growing up. I've always been a big fan and Shelton is going to be top 10 shortly. BTW AM changed his FH a few years ago because of injury. BS fh return down the line is out of control.

Based on your experience with clients what is the average age at which point it is very difficult for someone to continue to improve / play better than the previous year simply because aging body doesn’t allow it? What I find particularly appealing in tennis for those who learnt at a somewhat older age (at 20, 30 or older) is that you can continue to improve year after year. I understand that those who started at a young age / played college tennis / tournaments their peak time in tennis will be in their 20s. In other words can you still continue to improve in your 60s, 70s (80s I doubt it).

Mannarino has a very "compact" stance on his FH and BH. Like in fighting, this makes it easier to counterpunch and hide your intentions making him difficult to read as well.

Cookie cutter tennis where everyone plays like Djokovic - defensive game, two handed backhand, and little risk taking (subjective I know) bores me. Add grunting, frequent fist pumps, and looks to the player's box - all this is a turn off! Edberg, Rafter, Marcelos Rios - this is exciting tennis. I will def. follow Mannarino and rooting for this underdog!

Nice video but I would call Mannarino's style "old school". I think Mannarino actually uses very compact modern strokes instead of old school style. Old School tennis to me is more likely McEnroe, Connors and Evert where they hit more off the front, more neutral and closed stances, with less loop in the backswing and smaller core rotation.

Don't get me wrong Nik I love when Mannarino that plays like bunting the ball (Tiafoe dixit) beats opponents that seem much more dangerous.
But after watching his double bagel vs Djokovic and hearing in Twitter that the last time Nole administered such a score was against Carlos Berlocg in USO in 2011 people are asking now if
that means that Mannarino was Berlocqued the other day ? 🤭
Or that the so called double bagel so far from now on in tennis world will be named a Mannarinade or if I beat tomorrow my next opponent 6-0, 6-0 am I allowed to say like
I schooled him a Mannarino or I waxed him a Mannarino or I gave him a Mannarinade or simply I put him a Mannarino🤣?

I bet he doesn't have the wrist flexibility that some players have.
I wrist only bends back about 45° and my elbows don't allow my arm to fully extend as much as others. I'm well aware of this from practicing yoga.
As a result my grip and stance is different in order to get the same swing through the ball.
We can't follow a model. More coaches should understand anatomy and do some simple test with their student to determine what their most effective technique should be

I think Ben Shelton is so impatient or in a hurry to be on top. He thinks he can duplicate or even surpass Alcaraz' achievements in a short period of time. He should learn more from these older players, be humble and respectful of them. His time to be on top will come when he gained enough knowledge and experience from his opponents everytime he loses. Sweet victory will come in due time. In the meantime, enjoy each match you play.

Probably the most sustained intelligent match I have watched since Federer gave up playing Even FedEx had very difficult time when he played him in Wimbledon. As an Indian,I will probably compare Mannarino's style to my countrymen RameshKrishnan who can make many players esp Shilton type rabbits dance to his tunes. This match was a delight to old hags like me who are not impressed with the idiotic playing styles of modern players misguided by morons sitting in their boxes as coaches.I hope Australia wakes up make their tennis sparkle with intelligence, rest of world will take long time to wake up

You can only play as good as your opponent allows you! If I were playing someone who "as not as good as myself" my plan would be to exploit his weaknesses, and to do that I would keep the ball in play until he/she has showed me what they can do. All the while I would be winning games at the same time. I tell tournament players you want to play your best tennis when you need to, that should have been a practice match for Ben, but he has not figured that out yet! That is how good players become great players. It takes years to understand that, some people never do. How do you play your best tennis against a player not as good as you? not pretty! but that's how you learn! I go to clubs and see kids giving lessons, they have no match experience (or very little) and it looks like these new people to tennis get off to a very bad start in their habits. I feel sorry for them, a good pro/trainer would give them better introduction to tennis. But then again, how do you tell a up and coming millionaire such basic things? hard lesson to learn and his trainers cannot seem to point that out him. Hope this helps, sorry for the rant.....
