Thoughtful and measured approach to this. I appreciate the mention that few of us are taught how to date compassionately. I will say that I think this convo could have been better served if the focus was not on what's right vs wrong, but instead what's necessary vs unecessary. From an evolutionaty standpoint, generations upon generations ago, perhaps there was merit in men being consistently attracted to women in their fertility prime, but now thanks to advancements in healthcare, nutrition and lifestyle - it is no longer necessary. That is the advantage of being in a progressive society, we get to evolve faster than our genetics can keep up and determine for ourselves what is necessary vs what is not. A grown up (

Great comment. I would raise you a few questions then.
      1) Why insist on necessary vs unnecessary, majority of our dating preferences are not about what is necessary but what we like/dislike. I dont need a woman with a fat ass but I still want one. In that same token if men want women in their early 20s or women want men in their early 20s despite being in their mid thirties, i dont see why that want is wrong. (provided everyone is legal)
      2) You say its harm to date someone who hasnt fully mentally developed, can you cite me studies on that?
      3) If it is harmful, is it because its an older person engaging in that behavior with a younger person or can young people who are both at that young age engage in harming each other. My question being, if that harmful behavior is inevitable regardless of age, i dont see why older partners are off limits.
      4) is it societies job to protect young adults from their own mistakes? Part of development is making your own choices and learning from those experiences/consequences. Who are we to tell young adults what is / isnt necessary for them? I traditionally choose freedom over anything else.
      5) Honestly the experience wasnt bad lol, i just mentioned it to add personal experience to the convo.

necessary vs unnecessary, I like that point of view.

    • @KingKunta3003
      @KingKunta3003 4 роки тому +170

I definitely see both points of views. From an evolutionary Psychology perspective multiple studies till date have found that men are attracted to you youthful appearance, in terms of physical appearances. Vice-versa multiple studies in Evolutionary Psychology founds females are attracted to men likely to take care of there offspring, both physically and financially. These dynamics set up the norms in today’s dating experiences across most cultures. Not saying they’re perfect.
But what I don’t agree with is the biases in public perception of dating younger based on Gender. For example the French president is married to his secondary school teacher, they had a relationship when she was his teacher and he’d go to her house for homework and was friends with her daughter. After their odd relationship was found out by his parents there was public outrage and as time went by she left her husband for him at the age of 18. This man is the French president today, and society celebrates this lady. Do you think this would be the case if there roles were reversed. Ethically speaking as a man, I know I need to be more cautious especially if I possess any power in society.

I'm not sure if this analogy holds up. If a group of high school kids competed against a group of elementary school kids in football, yes, the HS kids have a developmental advantage over them and the elementary school kids would be at a disadvantage, but when it comes to forming relationships people are not competing, they're coming together -- and those same advantages/disadvantages might be what's "necessary" (as you claim) for some people to feel attraction towards someone else. And we don't get to decide what's "necessary" and "unnecessary" for people to feel attraction for someone else, only they do. Again, this coming together/forming of a romantic relationship is often predicated on these developmental differences and as you say, people determine that for themselves.
You also contradict yourself. You said "we get to evolve faster than our genetics can keep up and determine for *ourselves* what's necessary vs what is not", and then literally contradict yourself in the next sentence by dictating what is necessary and what is not for other people. I thought they were the ones deciding that for themselves? That's a fundamental flaw in your entire post. I'm not trying to excuse this dude's behavior or advocate for him. I don't really care about any of that. I just thought your post was interesting.
One more thing you said -- "perhaps there was merit in men being consistently attracted to women in their fertility prime, but now thank to advancements in healthcare, nutrition and lifestyle -- it is no longer necessary" -- Correct me if I'm wrong, but the implication here (at least what I got from it) is that men should be attracted to something else, or that their attraction should change to something other than whatever it is currently. To what or how exactly should their attraction change? My other question is, who gets to decide whatever that is, other than the men in question themselves?

@@N7Tigger I can totally relate, going through high school I had a teacher who was like a mother to me, very welcoming, always there when you needed to talk, during one of the most difficult times of development, thats really important since not everyone has parents to talk to. She would say, "I'm not supposed to, but I would like to give you a hug, is that alright?" and of course I'd say yes, she wanted to console me, there was never anything inappropriate about it. Any less appropriate than hugging your mother or father. Teachers dont have the level of respect that they should have because teachers are either amazing, or dirt. and the dirt teachers ruin it for everyone. I just compare it to a place like Japan, your social standard are so different, you are given so much responsibility because that drives maturity. If you have no responsibility you arent driven to do anything. i see it all the time with teenagers who sit on their ass all day, no responsibility and expect the world to just fall to their feet. a society whos parents have to walk their kids to school every day, and japan, tiny little girls barely 5 years old, are expected to walk to the station, take a train, an hours ride away to school everyday by themselves.
its sad, the west coddles their offspring too much. how can anyone grow up if they're not expected to. thats why we have the worst case of man-child syndrome in the world.

The dude was chatting online. The women involved are responsible to state their age and when they did so, he literally ghosted them. That’s not the action of a predator, groomer, or “pedo.”
As far as I can tell with the available screenshots, he literally did the right thing immediately upon learning the girls were not adult women.

but when I saw the “evidence “ it’s so stupid because he didn’t even engage after they told him how old they were. If there comes out a story where he actually slept with an underage girl, they yep I’m totally against that. But anyone 18 or older who talked or flirted or dated. No problem with it. Every persons maturity levels are different but they put the legal age at 18. The law is the law. It might creep certain people out but I’m not buying this whole power dynamic. He uses his status as part of his charm. We all use what we can. I don’t like how it seems like he’s being “me too’d” when he didn’t actually do anything. It makes it harder for people to take real victims seriously.

Same, I think age gaps can mean less once everyone is past the development time. A 30-year-old with a 50-year-old while uncommon isn't nearly as bad as an 18-year-old with a 38-year-old the stages of life are just too different. Career, education, romantic experience are all tied to the passing of time. At 18 you literally haven't had the amount of time needed to be stable in these areas which can lead to bigger imbalances in relationships. I put the onus on the older person to simply decline to get involved in these kinds of relationships because the older person knows first hand the changes that are experienced with aging.

As a human science major, I have a lot of thoughts, data, and research on sexual exploitation, age, etc. My stance, I believe that 18 years of age should be mandated nationwide for both sexes and that no marriages between individuals under that age should be allowed (having grown up in a conversative community and seen the effects outside of research). Beyond that, understanding the age and developmental gap, unless there is an ethical power dynamic issue that would be of major concern where that individual that has control over a certain area of your life (ex. professor), they are free to sleep with any consenting adult. Part of being an adult, at 18 years of age, is that you are allowed to make what society deems to be "mistakes". You cannot build a society where you or public opinion determines what is best for another person who is an adult as they alone have that freedom (unless they are deemed incapable by the state due to their mental facilities).

Age of consent... I joined the Navy at 17 years old and turned 18 on my way back from the Persian Gulf. I was old enough to die for my country and pilot a 58 thousand ton Warship into combat, but not old enough to drink a beer Stateside? Also, I've met plenty of folks who were in their 50's who have less mental maturity than many 20 somethings; a test for mental maturity and aptitude would be great! When my son was a Senior in HS, we were at a recreational area and he saw some kids he knew from school, one girl who saw he and I talking approached and initiated conversation, when she found out I was his father she stated "I haven't seen any dads who look like you" with an expression which was difficult to take out of context... while flattered, it made me feel very uncomfortable; she was 18, however, not a road I had any desire to travel down, regardless of looks.
Power dynamic... I used to know a guy who was in his 40's who seemed to be focused on 18 year old girls, and it was primarily about power; he often cited the Bible... out of context. With that said, growing up, there were many girls in their early to mid-teens who actively perused guys in their mid 20's to early 30's... and older; obviously for sex. Those females were thoroughly used by the time they reached 20 and those fellas were no where to be found. When I was in my early 30's I dated a girl who was 22, she had already graduated from college, yet had no world experience, we had nothing in common and it was difficult to have a functional conversation; she viewed the world through a completely different lens. She would do most anything I asked, and such could have been easily exploited.
Grooming... I again reference the fella in his 40's who was focused on 18 year old girls. From what I understand, based on his own statements, he met these girls while they were under 18 and actively engaged in conversation for a year or more... essentially waiting for them to turn 18, so they were of legal age.

but why does that matter? people are trying to stop people from being victims of predation. so you teach people how to identify predation. it seemed to work pretty well with the stranger danger campaigns. kids know pretty well not to get into a car with strangers. why cant they be taught that with regards to sexual consent. I mean, we teach kids sexual education for a reason, because they fuck at ridiculously young ages sometimes, so why not teach them about it, instead we just teach them, DONT FUCK ANYTHING, and all it does is forces them to be SUPER secretive about it. ashamed of it....and what happens if they fall victim to a predator...they keep it a secret. just TALK ABOUT IT. people act like sex is the worst fucking thing in the world. protect kids from it! oh the humanity! kids watching porn oh no! let them watch horror movies or graphically violent tv shows instead.

I personally feel vastly uncomfortable talking to people in that age range, to be sure, but I still think it's perfectly reasonable for someone to have (legal) preferences of 18-year-olds. Remember, in his state the age of consent is 16 -- so 18 is not necessarily a 'borderline case' over there.
Bit of a tangent though: I'm from Holland, where the age of consent is 16 (with some other preconditions that have to be met too); but pretty much everyone just uses 18+ as the norm. If I met someone dating a 17-year-old, I'd still cringe, let alone a 16-year-old. In fact, I've NEVER met anyone that actually dates someone under 18 years of age (except for stories in high school of girl friends that have a 40 year old creepy as hell boyfriends). So there IS a difference between 'legal' and 'moral'. I wouldn't feel comfortable cancelling a Dutch guy for sleeping with a 17-year-old, BUT I would not be friends with that guy either.

I began a relationship with the owner of my store. the first time in my life I approached a man, him being the owner had nothing to do with it, him being in “power” didn’t mean he took advantage. I Initiated It, and in the beginning he was very very hesitant. He was worried about how he texted me, how he spoke to me, everything. When he asked me to sign something to show consent, at first I was pissed. But after I had time to think about it, I understood, for all he knows I’m just trying to get him, sue him, use it against him. And that’s so shitty people have to worry about that simply because they aren’t attracted to someone who is on their level when it comes to employment. Or anything really.

Yes, younger people can be more mentally mature and older people can be less so, but regardless of the maturity of either individual, the legality of the situation, and each one's ability to consent, if you as an adult are specifically seeking out minors it shows you are looking for someone more likely to be pliable and manipulated and that is predatory behavior. It's also probably the case that you're unable to mentally connect with people your own age because they see through your manipulative tactics.

    • @rosemarie7816
      @rosemarie7816 4 роки тому +10

Yes! I think that exactly what you say is what is at the base instinct we have that something is rotten with that behavior. It just feels like a person who is predatory. I feel that way when the gender is reversed too. I don't know why guys congratulate other guys if they get with a much older woman. Maybe just because guys see it as a way to gain sexual prowess? If I found out a much older woman went after my son I'd claw her damn eyes out based on pure instinct alone without sitting down to question it and have this deep dive discussion about it. It means to me that she is a weak minded, destructive person who can't manage her adult life and needs someone who is malleable to manipulate. That younger person is at a point in life (I know this from experience) in the age group we are talking about, that NEEDS to be using this time in their life to make decisions about education, career, saving, planning their future etc. This is a crucial period for planning and preparing a foundation. I don't think having a relationship with a person who is reaching into the past to live out their high school fantasies is a healthy direction or laying a stable foundation for their future.

Don't call people "dumb boy" when you're too stupid to grasp basic English and instead makeup strawman arguments to fight against. And then to show how worthless you are, you suggest that they're looking for "younger girls" because they aren't corrupt or "misraised" despite the fact that there is no known problematic prevalence of corruption when girls become adults. You out yourself as a misogynist by singling out girls and claiming most are stuck up and stereotypical despite there being no evidence to support that. And in reality, because children have a much more undeveloped brain and specifically the prefrontal cortex than an adult, their ability to make logic and rational decisions is worse than an adult's, making them more likely to make poor decisions. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3621648/

Chris D’Elia is walking the line between creepy and illegal. He was freaked out and told her that was the end of it. She really didn't care, I got the impression she was not at all new to sex. Point is my buddy who certainly got around but certainly didn't prey on younger girls (this girl was at a bar illegally at midnight it's not like he went to a high school football game) felt uncomfortable because that's a normal human reaction. Doesn't matter all that much as the majority of young people in Japan have been backing away from relationships. This has led to a population decline as not enough couples are marrying and having children to offset the death rate among the elderly. The average female there now makes more money than a male so there is no financial incentive to marry a man any longer. Many young males are becoming lost in games and easily obtainable substitutes for sex which removes the responsibility that a real relationship requires. Studies indicate by 2100 Japan's population will be half what it is now. On the upside, their cities won't be so crowded any more.

Pursuing a teenager at 18 when you are well above their age is still predatory. That person is fresh out of high school with much to learn about themselves and in life.
Just because they are a "legal adult" doesn't mean you aren't a creep. They may not be baby birds, but geez, they re still just barely learning to fly.

I would agree with that assessment. I get the argument that people can be emotionally mature for their age. So say a 30 year old meets an 18 year old and they have the same maturity level and hit it off. I can still see people being uncomfortable but I wouldn't say that's without question predatory. If a guy on the other hand is purposely conversing with younger girls on social media basically scouting them out, that's something entirely different. Perhaps I'm way off but that's how I see it.

I really find it interesting with the idea that even if people are uncomfortable with something, they're unwilling to say it. I remember reading an outstanding line about this in the book The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo which was said by the villain and it's honestly a great summary of a lot of people's mentality towards these things.
The quote was: "You knew something was wrong but you came back into the house. Did I force you, did I drag you in? No. All I had to do was offer you a drink. It's hard to believe that the fear of offending can be stronger than the fear of pain. But you know what? It is."

We can lie to ourselves as men but no matter what, if your a famous UA-camr or a plumber the type of woman you’ll attract will be directly tied to your earning abilities/status. Hypergamy ain’t fair.

hypergamy is total fair and real balance. because there are other types of women for you to attract. Being a hot sexy woman is the female equivalent to being a rich man. It is an equal asset. A mans looks don't matter as much to a woman because, a man's looks don't hold much value to a woman's biological needs.

    • @shin-ishikiri-no

@@tiffwilson3141 The difference is men are more fair with who they date. We give more women chances than the other way around. Have you seen the OKC study regarding perceived attractiveness and messaging habits? Most women overrate themselves, and they find over 80% of males unattractive... Men were much closer to 50% in their evaluations... So, unfortunately no it's not equal. Also, men have a wider variety of "types" compared to women, so most women have a fair shot if their ego isn't through the roof.

I remember when I was in high school...late 80s, and I read an article in my mom's issue of Cosmo (bathroom reading material), and there was an article that basically said that women tended to hit that 18 yr old level of maturity more quickly then men, but tended to stay around that level for far longer.
That may have had something to do with my attraction to "older" women, marrying a 34 yr old woman when I was 23. It seems to have worked since we'll be celebrating our 22nd anniversary in September.
It always seemed, to me, that the people that matured "early" were the ones that had fairly rough lives as children or teens.

When I was 17 I was involved with a 40 year old man. I had already moved out of my parents house. I worked with him and we started becoming physical. He was the first guy I was ever with. I wasn't looking for love or marriage. I just really liked him. When I turned 18 and wanted to be more open about the fact that we were seeing each other that was when I found out that he was actually seeing 2 other women who were actually closer to his age, so having an open relationship was still a problem for him but he didn't want to end the "relationship" and I wasn't looking for commitment. So, I still continued to see him until I was almost 20. He called me stupid at work one time. I decided I wasn't going to continue giving someone that thinks I'm stupid blow jobs. So that was when it ended. I don't think that was the best decision I ever made but I don't feel like I was manipulated into something I didn't want to do.

A 40 year old person should not be involved with a 17yo teenager weather you consented or not. It's wrong and you wouldn't want it for your own child. The majority of
17yo don't desire to be in relationships with middle aged men, and we shouldn't normalize it. The rule is 18+ by then you should be able to make your own decisions and face the consequences of what you consented to.

I think it has more to do with admiration. These girls would never look twice at a regular guy, plumber, whatever, with the same age. They idealize these celebrities, and what its like to be with them. Then when they realize, the man is using his celebrity to F....k, they feel like he took advantage of him. Well, you were chasing fame too, booboo.

You have no idea how niave girls 21 and under are. And that is why these men are interested.

Because women tend to not look at plumbers. There are actual articles proving this where women do not care about them because they don't have a college degree when they went to college even though they are making 6+ figures. Women tend to not be logical sooooo not much else to say about this. Women think with emotions rather than logic.
