    Important thing to note: the swung 16th note feel is more associated with hip hop and certain electronic genres, whereas the swung 8th note is more associated with blues and jazz, occasionally rock music with a very subtle swing.
    The old timers were enigmatic about swing because the particulars of how delayed the even beat was played a huge role in the sound of the song or genre of jazz, that couldn’t be reduced to the “quarter note then 8th note in triplet time” oversimplification. As this was the days before electronic timing, musicians couldn’t be all “63% swing.” It really had to be felt instead thought of analytically.

    • @dxfifa
      @dxfifa Місяць тому

      This is meaningless as Jazz "swung 8ths" on the ride are often written in double time compared to blues and rock and sound like swung 16ths. Actual swung 8ths are "shuffle" like the blues shuffle. This means that using academic subdivisions is pointless. Basically if it feels like triplets missing the middle, it's a shuffle, if it feels like sets of 2 with the first longer and you can't count 3 or play in between the two without it feeling nonsense it's swing. I would argue once you get to jazz tempo, it feels 100% like 16th note hip hop swing but slower rather than blues shuffle but faster. Around 120-170bpm. Hip hop swing is double time at 80-95bpm for comparison. Blues is around 70- 100bpm at normal time. If you want to write Jazz swing as 8ths you're at 120-160 bpm. So you're effectively playing a little slower than hip hop swing, but almost double blues shuffle. As you can see, it's jazz notation that's misleading here in that your comment using notation conflates jazz and blues even though jazz swing is more like the hip hop you imply would be double as fast

    • @dliessmgg
      @dliessmgg Місяць тому +2

      Part of their obtuseness is also that this "swing rhythm" is only what the rhythm section did. I've seen a study of someone taking an exact look at what the soloists did over this rhythm, and it included playing a straight rhythm that is delayed so the off-beat 8ths match up with the rhythm section and many other funky things, which they did by exact listening & feeling it out rather than putting numbers on things.

    People say that electronic music is mechanical, and they are right. If Wendy (aka Walter) Carlos had just programmed the notes into her Moog for “Switched On Bach” it would not have been a hit. But she didn’t do that, she added “Swing”, just enough to make the music come alive, like a good classical concert musician would.

    One good thing even if it's a bit funky on the TR6S and TR8S with how they handle swing is it allows you to swing early which while uncommon on drum machines isn't actually that uncommon in music with more traditional instruments especially in jazz were swinging one way or another isn't uncommon. Also the weirdness with the swing range doesn't bother me as swing is something I dial in purely by ear like I would performing jazz live. My biggest complaint as some one with a strong background in jazz is most DAW and hardware will only swing the even steps when some times you want to swing the odd beats. Usually microtiming/nudging will let you manually swing the odd steps when you want that as it is actually useful in some circumstances especially if you want to emphasis the drunken feel swing can bring to piece helping emphasis the intentional unevenness of steps.
