Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

You have quickly become one of my favorite channels. This is what a sailing channel should look like! Thank you for sharing your adventures.
You
Strangely satisfying watching and listening to the antifoul being applied thanks for sharing your hard work looks great.
This is the 3rd time we have watched your videos....Passages from the UK....then the Pacific passage,,,,and now your Atlantic crossing and the Caribbean. We live in Japan.....and what has hit many of our visitors especially during the summer.....is the humidity. This summer for example, we have regularly hit 40%.....However, the killer, is the humidity! My wife is Japanese, and slightly perspires.... Me, a Welshman, sweats like a pig! In the summer, I take 4 showers per day! Thank you so much for your uploads,,,,We watched your Great Barrier Island video earlier. Just looking forward to the next stage of your journey.
I like the hat!!
Watching bottom paint dry has never been more fascinating to watch! Thanks for sharing another great video episode Barry.
Coconut husk is normally removed by repeatedly impaling it on a pointed stick imbedded in the ground or otherwise held firmly at a slight angle.
The harder kernel is then opened by lopping a small segment off.
Nice one barry
You are one of my favorite sailing channels
you get another stand put it in place next to placed stand remove placed stand then scrape area exposed, paint you left barnacle seats as well tisk tisk but you sure can deal with sailing got the right head set thanks for these videos
Just goes to show you, with the right music even paint drying looks good.
"good job i'm sober." :D
thanks for perking up my friday, mr. perrins.
Brilliant just great
A quote from Jack kueroac, there's a little bit of thief in all of us bring out the knife
I'm impressed with your cleanliness for a man on his own , great work Barry , thanks .
Enjoyed that Barry.Thanks.
Incredible adventure, Barry you are a Hero.
Ha ha, my wife is Dominican and she's always telling me how delicious coconut water is, but I always have the same reaction as you!
Ok, the Justin beiber reference made me chuckle, lol 😁
Foot grease ......them words stopped me mid breakfast 🍳....lol
you ARrr Fantastic!
+Barry When you have a green coconut, the only part that is useful is the water and the easiest and neatest way to get the water is to drill a hole with your cordless drill, which you must (or should) have on board. The meat is still mushy and often sour. Sometimes the water is sour too. :-(
The water is usually very good.
Paul Ohlstein like that idea.
Thanks Barry. That poor coconut didn't stand a chance :) Good wind and fair seas.
She's looking Good! Great video! Thanks for sharing!
“It’s a good thing I’m sober.”
(getting up from computer, walking outside, wondering what alien pod has replaced Barry.)
Fantastic video, thanks for sharing
Love ya Barry. Yarrr 👍
While in the Bahamas I had Dreamweaver hauled, applied bottom paint from Panama. Paint failed in three months. Turned out to be the toughest paint I have ever encountered to remove. Hope you had better luck.
Great episode !
Barry, it looks like you have as much patience for painting as I do. Which is very little. I know it's necessary and it must satisfying when it' done but boy what a pain. Well done sir.
Another great video Barry, Thank You
Hi Barry It could be that sombody else has told you what the machette was used for. I have the same kind of thing.. Found it on a bus in Brasil. Some drunk sugarcane harvesters left it there by accident... Thanks for the adventures..from Rotterdam The Netherlands..
Thanks Barry,Your boat is looking good and clean. I think just like you over my Dad,I lost him two years ago and Mum last year. but am retired now and enjoying myself! have fun, hope the beer is flowing well. :)
Barry, you need some lessons on how to take the top off the coconut, also you threw away the best bit, the young coconut white meat which you should have scraped out with a spoon before throwing the shell.
They don'tt have young coconuts in Poole.
@@Kitiwake BWAHAHAHAHA. The rum...it burns coming out the nose!! Thanks for that.
@@Kitiwake BWAHAHAHAHA. The rum...it burns coming out the nose!! Thanks for that.
You can also make coconut chips in the oven, slice thin (good luck) little oil salt, bake.
Barry, glad you fixed your fuel pump leak, they tell me the modern thing to do is replace the mechanical pumps with very reliable small electric lift pumps. And close hole with plate. Haven't done it on my old engine yet but new engines come that way now! ( it stops the risk of the diaphragm leaking fuel into the sump!)
I do hope you could afford to put on many coats of antifoul......
Cheers Warren
Awesome hull footage, looks like another planet!
Great job! I enjoyed that.
Great . ep..... more please...
Hi. You are a inspiration. Sailing greetings from Cascais.
brilliant
Barry, been watching you for a fair while now and thanks to yourself and a couple of others I've finally taken the plunge and bought a boat. Admittedly it's a 'shabby' 18 ft clinker but it has potential for adventures. Not far up the coast from your home waters, I'll be having mishaps on the river Exe and around Exmouth. Thanks for the videos, you might not believe it but to folk like myself they are somewhat inspirational.
Thanks Barry. Great as usual!
Great episode. Loved it
More than Justin Beaber fans. 😂😂 You are now my best friend. Stay safe and salty!
Great video Barry ⛵
Yes sir I enjoyed this episode. You are unstoppable Barry! Hope it cools down there and you enjoy some R&R soon.
Good vid Barry.
A Kaleidoscope of activity and a good day at the office Barry - yacht and coconut wise ( where's the Malibu when you need it ? ), machete wise et al . Despite offloading the heater the good memories of your da didn't go with it. The Justin Beaber comment was very funny. Unless of course you're Justin Beaber. The water pollution, sadly, speaks volumes. Remember so much of Asia was the same. Rivers used as dustbins. Shine on you crazy diamond :-)
Great job :)
Ha Barry looks like you need a better sun shade pal 😀 mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun
Barry, we need to go find that treasure some day...
ARG !!!
Your awesome, love the video's. Glad your getting to live your dream.
Sad you and RAN are heading your separate ways, but also happy for you! Cheers from N.E. FLORIDA! I'll keep watching!
Great stuff Bazza !!! Cheers mate 👍
Tape it to the top of the winch...then whack it!
Never been used for piracy.. Mr perrins England is the home of pirates so get pirating lol. Great vid as always
That's nothing to be proud of.
Remembering all those yachts and ships attacked.
Nice upbeat video Barry. Always thought a pirates favourite letter was R but apparently its the C :-) Love your vids. Thanks for sharing!! Ant and Cid x
Always great stuff Barry, we look forward to your next episode!
Getting ready here to leave East Coast of US. New Jersey southbound! s/v Dijan
So funny, I'll let the others tell you all about how to open a coconut correctly 😄😆👍🏼
3:20 Beautiful!
Your truly amazing ....
thanks
Fantastic
yes I liked it , I wondered what had happened to you with nothing on facebook ... good to see the engine fix and your guests on Ran's video .....cheers
They use styrofoam as floating material for the underside of the docks. The constant sea action grinds it down, that’s likely where it comes from.
10:00 no wonder she's slow! its carrying loads of radiator metal!!!
Did the styrene stick to the boat because of static electricity build up on the boat as it was lowered in? Maybe this could be a way to collect it out of the sea maybe? Great paint job 👍
In one of Ray Mears books he advises never to use a machette unless you have a medic on hand !
Green coconuts can be gone after with a hand knife. They’re very soft inside. The “meat” is easily scooped out with a slice of the husk. Missing Central America now.
That coconut looked a bit gamey
Seems like someone had invented a hull coating to stop barnicles from clinging
Keep that hat it brill for the heat I've got one they are brill.👍🇬🇧
Hahaha. The Justin bieber joke really cracked me up. Really unexpected. Love your videos and sense of humour. Hope to have a beer with you one day
well done looks good those covers a small cheep trick find some pva glue mix it 60/ 40 water and use the small roller and saturate your covers . roll it on till they are very saturated , then let dry , and you will stay dry or use cylicone spray in the cans , but the pva on my covers wich were allways leeking are now all good , well done are you comming into the pasific through panama to do the islands ,
i think the sun is getting to you
Yes, ya add ya best vodka, not cheap vodka ya good stuff.
Your steel ship has really nice looking lines and those rounded bilges definitely help that out. Those barnacles sure are a pain.....they need to develop a superamphiphobic paint that actually works and stays on underwater.....
Does that mom and daughter boat have a channel i would like to see more of that boat
Dude i thought for sure you were going to wreck your boat.good job that boat looks good all spiffy and chit. Peace and be safe out there.
WIiiiiilllssooooon RIP
cut across the bottom ( broadside)near the end so you get an opening and not more thn 3 a day
or you will have a very long " sit in "
Could have sworn that was an expensive artwork at 1:41? 😁
An English motor leaking oil?! Unheard of... hehe
Shadow's looking very pretty with her new bottom :) Two guests? J & D ?
Ohøj a cocanut you cut open in the end ! but it got 2 of them ?
Hi Barry, One question, have the Ladies got a sailing channel? I would be interested to see how they get on, they have my respect.
john lowe no they don't do videos.
He does do an excellent Pirate impersonation though!
Look to yer lines there Cap'n Jack Sparrow.
A new sail strays far from straight and narrow.
Not grog nor wench safe with him be!
So a wary eye keep in the Caribbee!
Aarrrgh
so do you ever get lucky with the ladies on the steel boat?
Coconut may prompt use of the head. 😮
Hey Barry loved the pirate accent at the end of this video. Was the pirate Irish ? 😉
Kevin Smyth yup, pirateish.
arrr I be deciding to get a grog arr
Cmon people, lets get rid of that damned styrofoam and single use plastics.
Managed it yet?
Okay, its not like I CHOOSE to use it. Its just that its everywhere and bloody useful.
Hi barry brill love it what length and make is it the lines are braw
Great vid, even greater comment about our national embarrassment “bieber “ small b is on purpose.
LOL !
Thank you Barry
I noticed the girls had a very dirty bottom too!
How do you or when do you paint the squares that are covered by the ground stands?
That’s not a machete....that’s a f...... knife. Ask Paul Hogan.
have you ever tried wax on the bottom?
no.
what do you need to fix your fridge
Ok, that's one helluva machete but come on man....you didn't know the innards of a coconut?
As for your engine...here's hoping you get it sorted because where you're headed, it is going to be badly needed.
