WTF Happened to Eureka? (2006-2012)

  • Welcome back to another edition of Gone But Not Forgotten! In this episode, we're looking at the cult Sci-Fi Channel (or as it's known now Syfy) tv series, EUREKA (aka A TOWN CALLED EUREKA). This show starred Colin Ferguson as a U.S. Marshall who reluctantly winds up as the sheriff of Eureka, with his teenage daughter Zoe (Jordan Hinson), in tow.
However, Eureka is no ordinary town in that it's populated exclusively by scientific geniuses. The top-secret town is operated by a U.S Gov shell company called Global Dynamics (GD), and throughout five well-loved seasons, all kinds of well-loved insanity took place. Created by Andrew Cosby & Jaime Paglia and co-starring Joe Morton, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Jordan Hinson, Ed Quinn, and more, the series was part of Syfy's attempt to create a shared universe. EUREKA led to WAREHOUSE 13, and the two shows often crossed over. In its time, EUREKA was extremely popular, being Syfy's most-watched show launch in years and one of the top-rated cable shows of the day. It was well-regarded enough that it ran for five seasons and seventy-seven episodes. While unfairly obscure nine years after it aired its last episode, EUREKA still has a devoted cult following, and it's a great show to dig into for the uninitiated. So join us as we investigate a town called EUREKA!

This show deserves a full reunion movie. It's too good a premise, a town with crazy scientists and a everyman character type with really good emotional light hearted stories and not preachy or condescending to the audience. The way they wove each character to evolve over the 5 seasons was perfect. Even it's so called flaws were turned into gold imo. It's in my top 5 science fiction shows and top 20 shows of all time.

Colin Ferguson was awesome in that he was able to do physical comedy which felt real enough while being over the top funny and as such was the perfect fit for the character. My only complaint about the show was they kept trying to one up itself so by the end it didn't feel the same as it did in the first few seasons.

Eureka was one of the few shows that used time travel as believable as possible. Plus, that episode changed the entire series and the characters' relationships, for the rest of the series. They were never able to go back and change the events back to normal. A fantastic way to revitalize a series - essentially make it into another series.

What I loved was the interconnected nature of the show with other Sci-Fi shows. Haven't finished the video at this point but Syfy had it's own Marvel style universe and they didn't even appreciate it. Alphas, Warehouse 13 and Eureka all had crossover episodes and all technically take place in the same universe. I also remember the painful bits like when Syfy wanted more money so they pimped the show out and had corporate sponsers for projects in Eureka. But still it was a great time. Fargo showed up on Warehouse 13 to fix some of the tech and the main male lead on Warehouse 13 had basically a superpower for danger that made him an Alpha.

When SyFy axed the Stargate franchise many fans assumed that it was for the Eureka/Warhouse 13 universe which was getting popular at that time...then they did the same thing to Warehouse 13 / Eureka I have not watched a single show on SyFY since then. Unpredictable plots, eccentric characters, scientifically very savvy, thought provoking ideas as well as providing the viewer madcap comedy. I've turned on so many of my friends to this show (when it was still was on the air) and most if not all, fell in love with it after just watching the first two or three episodes. The only show that came close to its unique blend of zany fun, inventiveness and action sci-fi was NBC's 'Chuck'. There hasn't been anything on TV like either of these two unforgettable shows since.

You complain that EUReKA was promised a 6 episode final season, but was given only 1 extra episode on their last season. That may be true, but what an episode it was. It was probably the most satisfying, genuine show wrap-up I've ever seen. With one or two exceptions it neatly wrapped up almost all storylines, and did so with reverence to the heart of the show.

My favorite show of all time. I’ve rewatched it like four times. This era of the SYFY channel was its own golden age of television.
I used to dislike Zoe but she became the best character in the end. She was the “every teen” in this world of genius. We got to see what it was like to grow up in this town. I will agree that I think they kind of got confused as to what to do with her. I think had she started younger, like 12, and ended at high school graduation it would have been easier to have her grow as a character.
Yes. Zane was awful. Joe and Fargo had more chemistry and that would have been an amazing match.

If you like Eureka, good chance you'll like that movie which definitely rates high in 'quirk'.
Edit, addendum: For the really old, the term 'sci-fi' used to be hated by all science fiction fans because its first usage was as a pejorative back when science fiction was seen as crap by 'sophisticated' folks, s-f was the more accepted abbreviation. You're right about turning it into SyFy, it makes no sense and to me, it's annoying at best.

I know I'm late to this one and you probably wont see this. This was a good breakdown of the show. Your side tangent about SciFi/SyFy is actually part of the issue of WTF happened to the show. SciFi is a genre and couldnt be trademarked for merchandising. SyFy could be. The channel was changing and trying to gain revenue streams. I remember when Eureka came on and watched it weekly. Then somewhere it became a half season and then the second half of the season a year later. Then more delayed seasons. The spin-offs were nice, but shortlived in one and almost nonexistent in another. It was the story of a network trying to find their way (from SciFi to SyFy) and throwing a lot of stuff at the wall to see what worked. Reality shows and good scifi originals and wrestling all mixed together on a program schedule. Thanks for the breakdown!
