Its actually awful growing up during gamings golden days only to now be stuck in a time where these kind of bozo's are common in the industry. 3 to 5 years ago I was actually convinced that I was getting tired of gaming, constantly quiting modern games before finishing them or lacking interest in them all together only to realise that I don't have that feeling when I go back to games from several generations ago. Like I can pop in something like Mario 64, Kingdom Hearts, Ninja Gaiden 2, Ocarina of Time&Majora's Mask, Final fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc and still have just as much fun as when I was a Kid, sometimes even more so because I understand these games better now as an Adult than I ever did as a child.
I've tried playing some of the old games the zoomers universally claim have aged poorly and they couldn't have been further from the truth. The first two Fallouts, Half Life, Unreal, Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief and even sports games like NHL 98 and racing games like Carmageddon, Twisted Metal and Need for Speed were fun and far more engaging than their modern equivalents. Felt like I've been lied to by an entire generation.

If I really want to make them feel like they're included, like part of the family, then I treated them as a real human being. Simple as that.

I never got called a racist until I moved to a Northern homogenized town in Connecticut made up primarily of pasty white British descendents with no concept of how to talk to anyone of color. The town I came from was a melting pot so we had tons of people from all over the world there. Day ONE of me being in THIRD GRADE, the FIRST question another kid asked me was if I was part of the KKK, based solely on the fact that I was from Tennessee. That is a core memory now. And they all thought that way and made fun of me for being Southern; treated me like a hick because I pronounced things differently AKA I didn't use British pronunciation so therefore I was an inbred. And of course they treated me like I had no idea how to talk to people of different races. ... My first friend to my memory was black. We used to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark in his attic and loved being scared. That, too, is a core memory.

Another w take, growing up in the 90s and early 00s in school, I had friends of all races and two genders. We didn't decide our race, we were people and race was secondary. Sure people felt more comfortable hanging out with like race but at the end of the day, we all hung out after school laughing and cracking jokes. What Asmon said about growing up in a multicultural setting is so true. In Elementary School alone I'd made friends with both a British kid and a kid from Pakistan. I had black and mixed friends throughout middle and high school. Most characters are goblins and slimes and robots and other random enemies. Let's just pick some games and see if that holds up. Mario franchise. Mario and Luigi themselves are basically the only white men, with a few other minor characters tossed in. The rest are women, turtles, mushrooms and other goofy little critters. Legend of Zelda has Link and other characters, but the balance certainly isn't 95% and it would be questionable that Link is 'white' and sometimes he's not a man since he's a kid in a bunch of the games. Metroid... does that even have any male characters? I guess Other M did. Donkey Kong is about a bunch of apes and monkeys. Crash Bandicoot is about a bunch of animals, Cortex maybe counts? But he's the bad guy. Sonic, same thing, Robotnik is a white male, I guess. Spyro is a dragon and then there's all the Skylanders games with their casts of random critters. Pokemon, I guess you can pretend like you're a white male, but then there's at least 151 cute critters to offset you and every other human in the game. And so on. And for every single one of those games, for every non-human, woman or non-white male in them you need 19 white males from some other game to make up for it. And those games have a ton of entries in their franchises. I think I would be hard pressed to even think of a single game with a 95% "white male" demographic (Maybe the original Wolfenstein???) much less that being true across the whole of the industry. It's not even true for the examples they scramble to like DOOM or Halo.

I grew up in a white country and I remember I loved movies like I am Legend,Collateral ,Blade that made me go on a movie marathon on movies with Will Smith,Denzel or Wesley in them because i loved how they acted in them.For me they were just good actors that's how I view them. Game characters are white because they're written by mainly white people.. Most anime characters in Japan are, yup that's right! Japanese.. It's not to say that there can't be stories about other groups, but most people tend to draw from their experiences. And what games in 2024 that have options for races leave out one color? Every game that I've played in the last 10 or so years has an option to have an african/asian/caucasion/indian/middle eastern look to them.. Unless its a story game with a certain character(s).

3 to 5 years ago I was actually convinced that I was getting tired of gaming, constantly quiting modern games before finishing them or lacking interest in them all together only to realise that I don't have that feeling when I go back to games from several generations ago.
Like I can pop in something like Mario 64, Kingdom Hearts, Ninja Gaiden 2, Ocarina of Time&Majora's Mask, Final fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc and still have just as much fun as when I was a Kid, sometimes even more so because I understand these games better now as an Adult than I ever did as a child.
Same thing with some "kids" comics and cartoons. They can have additional layers in story that you can only understand as adult.

I've tried playing some of the old games the zoomers universally claim have aged poorly and they couldn't have been further from the truth. The first two Fallouts, Half Life, Unreal, Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief and even sports games like NHL 98 and racing games like Carmageddon, Twisted Metal and Need for Speed were fun and far more engaging than their modern equivalents. Felt like I've been lied to by an entire generation.

As an Indonesian, that's how I feel whenever I see people in the west trying so hard to be inclusive. I grew up in a country with a thousand ethnic groups, so meeting people from different backgrounds is common to me. I have/had friends and even family from different backgrounds. And to me, it's always fun learning more about them and their cultures. But that's by any no mean that I'm going to do something like trying too hard to make a person feel included by forcing other people to accept them in the most embarrassing way.
If I really want to make them feel like they're included, like part of the family, then I treated them as a real human being. Simple as that.

Another w take, growing up in the 90s and early 00s in school, I had friends of all races and two genders. We didn't decide our race, we were people and race was secondary. Sure people felt more comfortable hanging out with like race but at the end of the day, we all hung out after school laughing and cracking jokes.

What Asmon said about growing up in a multicultural setting is so true. In Elementary School alone I'd made friends with both a British kid and a kid from Pakistan. I had black and mixed friends throughout middle and high school.

Most characters are goblins and slimes and robots and other random enemies. Let's just pick some games and see if that holds up.
Mario franchise. Mario and Luigi themselves are basically the only white men, with a few other minor characters tossed in. The rest are women, turtles, mushrooms and other goofy little critters.
Legend of Zelda has Link and other characters, but the balance certainly isn't 95% and it would be questionable that Link is 'white' and sometimes he's not a man since he's a kid in a bunch of the games.

I think I would be hard pressed to even think of a single game with a 95% "white male" demographic (Maybe the original Wolfenstein???) much less that being true across the whole of the industry. It's not even true for the examples they scramble to like DOOM or Halo.

Why use a comparison that implies that White Men are somehow completely necessary, or a piece of media would somehow not be viable without them? Yes, there is plenty to criticize about being too self congratulatory about the diversity in your media. Hell'sblade, tomb raider, heavenly sword, nier automata, dragons dogma 2, skyrim, and i can still here all day naming games where the protagonist is a female (and are excellent games) or where you can be a girl or a man. Really 95% are white males? I doubt it.

People who have actually had to deal with racism and homophobia/transphobia and xenophobia, discriminated for their religious beliefs, etc. are too busy trying to make a good life for themselves and possibly, but not REQUIRED, to be a part of some community movement that is focused and long term, making RESULTS and not just putting flags on their social media accounts or trying to push an agenda in something that just doesn't really matter(gaming) and in the end of the day you sacrifice storytelling/gameplay for something that won't really make a difference, and might even make it worse for those of us who are just trying to live our lives the best we can.
Like I get if the primary focus is on gameplay/story, and you want to make it focused on a certain demographic. It doesn't have to be the ENTIRE focus, and it should definitely not be a marketting selling point. That's just weird. You've turned a great opportunity as an artist to TELL YOUR STORY THROUGH ART and instead made it into a token expression that has zero meaning and zero value and just pisses people off who are tired of this sort of thing.
I don't think most reasonable people care that marginalized people are in games/movies/etc. The ones who do are weird and easy to spot. What I'm saying is that most people want to just live their lives and want to enjoy art for its own sake, and if it's a good story, without preaching some agenda in a way that takes away from everything else, then people are going to like it. It'll help people build empathy. That's NORMAL PEOPLE.
There are some distinctions, of course, like when there's a gay or trans person JUST EXISTING and might talk about their experience a little bit in an appropriate way, and some people get this idea that it's "shoving it down their throats" when it's obviously not. That's frustrating. Like if I just talk about how I'm trans some people online might get really worked up and say "why is that your entire personality? Why do you shove it down people's throats?" Like dude... I exist, it's just a fact about me. It's an important part of my identity, sure, but it's not the only part of my identity. The last thing I want is to be DIFFERENT, but at the same time I am PROUD of who I am, just as many people are proud of their heritage or beliefs, any aspect of identity, not just gender or sexuality.
That is always frustrating to see. But I think those people are maybe a few conversations, or maybe even just a few encounters, to realizing the truth is that we're all just people trying to make the best of this life just like anyone else. We just happen to be different in our own unique ways just like anyone else.

This is absolutely the key thing and where it crosses the line. There's a million reasons your game might not feature any white males in it at all, but that's never a brag. As annoying as it is, it's not difficult to imagine why they felt like that when for example in The Last of Us TV series, a whole episode is dedicated to a side character that only appeared briefly in the game with a little hint of being gay and the TV episode was centered fully around his gay relationship. I have no problem with movies like Brokeback Mountain existing, but it's easy to tell when the director for the Last of Us TV series was just adding in that episode to virtue signal. You can't convince me that the director spent extra cash and manpower out of the kindness in his heart and not because they can easily make the money back and more from the journalists gushing over it and convincing people who are obsessed with identity politic to watch it.

There's an episode in The Good Doctor about an autistic doctor who meets a trans girl patient and insists she's a boy because he uses his medical knowledge to say "penis = boy" but he learns to have more empathy by researching and LISTENING to what she's been going through and stuff like that. It was a huge growth opportunity for Shawn.

I grew up in a white country and I remember I loved movies like I am Legend,Collateral ,Blade that made me go on a movie marathon on movies with Will Smith,Denzel or Wesley in them because i loved how they acted in them.For me they were just good actors that's how I view them.
And now because of these freaks i'm inclined to avoid movies or games in general with certain demographics or at least do some proper research about them before watching/playing,just so I will avoid these abominations.It's really sad .

I really have only seen people complaining about casting like that which is recent. Conveniently, raceswap casting or casting inspired by wanting diversity/inclusion that happened prior to the Anti-wOkE Hollywood movement is almost never brought up by them.

When it happened, as you mentionned, dozen of years ago, the choice was very likely a casting choice (actor fit perfectly the role, was talented or bankable and so on). Game characters are white because they're written by mainly white people.. Most anime characters in Japan are, yup that's right! Japanese.. It's not to say that there can't be stories about other groups, but most people tend to draw from their experiences. And what games in 2024 that have options for races leave out one color? Every game that I've played in the last 10 or so years has an option to have an african/asian/caucasion/indian/middle eastern look to them.. Unless its a story game with a certain character(s).
