How have dogs been walking on pavement for a century or better without obvious injuries? I’ve never heard of vets warning to watch out for your dogs paw pads. Don’t get obnoxious on me you know I’m not talking about letting your dog walk across a hot tar parking lot.
@@prissylovejoy702 they probably wouldn't get any noticeable let alone serious injuries from hit pavement, but it can still get too hot for them to comfortably walk on, like it sometimes gets for us. Paw protection isn't a necessity, but some pup parents get worried or just want it to be as enjoyable as possible for their dogs :)
Dogs dont sweat, they use their paw pads to “traid” heat with the environment. So when you put shoes, they are not able to cool themselfs in the summer. Also, the shoes trap the heat in their paws, making it a perfect environment for fungus and bacteria, making it easier for them to get an infection. Just dont go out when the sun is too hot! Mornings and afternoons are mostly fine, and if you are worried, test the temperature with your own feet!
Not to mention walking on pavement trims down their nails, unless you clip them often the vessel (forgot the name) in the nails grows with them, not letting you cut the nails past where it grows to, and if it is causes lots of bleeding. Long nails are uncomfortable for the dog and you if they jump
@@user-hq8qr2cf4p I think it sometimes hard to remember that dogs are made for the outside world as well, and as you said doing earlier/later or just less frequent walks work fine
Some people are already pointing this out but without all the nuance so here’s some facts/tips for dog booties: 1) yes, dogs’ feet aid in temperature regulation so avoiding wearing booties as much as possible is recommended. Limiting time in extreme weather, regardless of whether they’re wearing boots should be the goal. If it’s impossible to avoid the extreme heat or extreme cold where you live then wearing boots for a couple quick bathroom breaks a day is totally fine!! The key is just keeping the boot wearing to a minimum. I live in a city where it consistently gets below zero in the winter and where excessive salt use is common. Using mushers wax doesn’t work to protect my dogs feet even if we’re only out for 5 minutes so we have to use boots just to go for a potty break. Also, if you need to use boots in extreme heat, try also using a cooling vest of some kind to help your dog stay cool or look for dog friendly indoor locations to exercise your dog at instead. Home Depot is great for this and some malls allow dog walking as long as you don’t go into stores. 2) for dogs with dew claws, like Goldens, boots can damage that joint when worn consistently, especially without socks. Even with a sock the boot will rub and squeeze the dew claw as they walk so be aware and, again, do your best to limit the need to wear boots. 3) Yes, many service dogs wear boots. My Golden is my service dog and like I mentioned before I only use boots when the risk of salt burn is inevitable in the winters. Some people use them so their SD won’t slip on linoleum or other slippery surfaces. I haven’t had this problem as I regularly trim my guy’s paw fur and nails so that he has plenty of grip. Service dogs are/should be trained to accept handling of their paws making regular grooming easy. The only time he slips is if he sits, then his butt slides around. In those cases I either ask him directly to lie down or allow him to slide into a down so that he doesn’t have to keep adjusting himself. I’ll sometimes bring a small blanket for him to station on too where he doesn’t slip and slide. If we ever take quick turns on slippery floor he’s practiced enough and is fit enough to do the turn carefully to avoid slipping. I personally don’t like using boots indoors when he’s working as they often hinder his mobility by making his feet overly grippy which causes tripping when making quick movements, they hurt his dew claws, and are unnecessary. Even if we’re talking about “well they have to wear boots to go on escalators,” an argument I’ve actually heard, I would argue that a dog should never go on an escalator, boots or no, as the hair on their bodies - especially with a golden retriever, a common SD breed - can get stuck and severely injure or even kill the dog. The cons outweigh the pros. 🤷🏼♀️ I have never been recommended by my trainers to put boots on him except to avoid salt burn… It’s fine whatever a handler chooses to do with their SD but I’d take some time to think about why you’re using boots; is it for a legitimate reason for you or your dog or is it just because you thought you had to? TL;DR Boots are a tool just like harnesses or collars and it is best to use them only when necessary and to do so correctly.
