A Book Review: Heidi Callier: Memories of Home: Interior Design & The Potting Shed Debacle of 2023

  • "In her debut book, designer Heidi Caillier shows how to mix moody color with layers of pattern, natural materials, and textures to create spaces that are both beautifully curated and comfortably livable.
Heidi Caillier believes that our homes should create a sense of place, and serve as the setting for lifelong memories. In her first book, she shares twelve houses from across the country, from the islands of Puget Sound to the Berkshires. The rooms of these houses are simultaneously nostalgic and of the moment. Caillier is a master of mixing patterns, combining florals with graphic lines and shapes, as well as using deeper, muddy colors to create coziness and warmth. There is a tension between masculine and feminine, modern and traditional as vintage pieces mingle with contemporary to create spaces that feel intrinsically inviting and effortlessly designed.
A creative mind who took the path less traveled, Caillier informs her interiors and this book with the same vibrant and enthusiastically patterned joie de vivre that colors her own life; creating homes that are nostalgic, romantic, creative, inviting, and made for both the big and small moments of life. Her warm and layered interiors create a backdrop for living-at the ready to create memories of home."

Great story! We bought a nice piece of property to build our dream retirement life. My dream was to build a house and a lovely garden in the front. His dream however was different. I now have a 30x50 metal building in the front acre of my home where my garden was supposed to be. To heal my disappointment, my husband bought the adjoining acre at the back of the house for my garden. As it turns out, I’m happy with the new garden area.

      Daniel, Daniel, Daniel... 😂😂😂
Maybe you need to change the door to "the shop" to a French style door and have the carpenter put in longer side windows... just in the front...that will make "the shop" look LESS like a shop and give it more of a warm welcoming appearance!
Do it now, while the gitten' good...
OR forever hold your place, while wallowing the dog house 😂😂😂

Well done, Mary - hysterical with the "vintage" Dallas, Dynasty, Gone with the Wind...scenes!! I have to side with you on the Shed Debacle of '23. Consciously or unconsciously, Daniel took advantage of your weakened state. That is a h-u-g-e outbuilding in place of your to scale potting shed. I do like the color and windows but it was underhanded.
All's fair in love and sheds with the way you worked it out! Very well presented and it's going to look amazing!! That was so fun! Thank you!! Nancy

Many years ago as I designed my gardens for our yard( we had just moved in to a 1940’s beach cottage) I wanted a water feature. I was fortunate enough to live near a family owned business that was for pond design, the plants, the fish everything you would need to create a pond. I would stroll this property and dream , waterfalls , waterlily, the fish. Our children were little at this time and so they surprised me one Mother’s Day with everything for my pond. They were going to help dad dig the hole and everything. A wonderful family project. I was working 4-12 at the time and so when I received my phone call to say goodnight to the children… the youngest said “ we are making your pond bigger ! It’s going to be a swimming pool! “. Let me speak to your father ! I said. The rest is history. No pond , but all these years later as I watch our grandchildren playing in the pool and I am retired from health care and have my own floral studio…. All is right with the world. Looking forward to your court yard Mary.

I have no doubt the great shed debacle of ‘23 will go down in the annals of Southern history. I can only sympathise with you at the affront you felt from your sick bed as “the shop” rose from the ashes of your wee potting shed. In fairness to Daniel, he did create a tasteful construction in a beautiful colour of green that undoubtedly Monty would approve of. The court yard looks fabulous so far and in time will compliment “the shop” just as you and Daniel compliment each other.

I don’t watch movies, the news, and no sitcoms, so I have time to use the ideas I get from Tartan Topiary. Along with my Country Sampler Magazines I am buying books like Mackenzie Childs and Return to Pretty. I like the blue the most. I have shared Tartan Topiary with my DIY Blue and White group.

Hi Mary, I sped past the book review to get to what happened to your potting shed! 😁
Well, I just read all your comments which are equally entertaining and must say many can relate! You and Daniel are hilarious-Removing your wife’s prized flowers, potting shed with her flower wall, orchids, framed photo of Larry the cat! Lawyering up, rock throwing, covid 😂 Wow!
The worst thing my husband did was mow down two rows of budding pink lady flowers that he thought were weeds. He presented them to me as “ kind of bouquet” and tried to cover the mistake of mowing them down! 💐. You two have a “ peaceful” week!

Great book review once again. We are much like you and Daniel as in 25 years we haven’t had many “fights” but we do bicker on things. We keep open discussions, express our opinions and then move forward. I do like the discussions with Champaign as well… LOL. I see who has the editing rights here. It’s going to take me a little while to process through this 😉. But I’m excited to see your courtyard! (love your pink ring!)

I understand the time needed to process this...it took me a year! I was willing to sacrifice the shed. I didn't want a large building in the back and was under the impression his shop would be a small addition added to the existing shed. (Making the foot print 11 x 20 NOT 11 x 40) I really did have COVID that turned into pneumonia, so I wasn't paying attention until it was too late. I had no idea the bench was coming down.

Hello Mary! Always so nice to visit with you! I enjoyed this review. I found it so interesting how different designers lean towards different color palettes and yet it always seems to work! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! Oh yes Mary I do know of Mrs. Whaley! Let me start by saying....if someone told me Daniel and my Hubs were brothers.....boy could I believe it!!! LOL!! Seems these husbands always get us when were down!!! LOL! Daniel is so funny, and I so enjoy listening to him! You two are a hoot!! However, in Daniel's defense (and I am really on your side!) the workshop looks pretty good! I think your courtyard is going to be beautiful! Oh how I wish we were neighbors!! LOL!! Have a wonderful week and I will see you in the next one! Hey to Daniel! Hugs! :)

Oh my goodness sorry to hear about your potting shed I hope you are getting a new potting shed 😊. An interesting book this week, very good photography. I can't honestly say it's one of my favorites as I'm not a lover of the dark and moody colors, I find them a bit claustrophobic. Oh my I sound awful but not my intent. Happy you and Daniel are friends again. Looking forward to next week. Take care

Mary, I absolutely adore you, but girlfriend l have to side with Daniel on this one. Us ladies pretty much have the entire house to our taste in design and functionality…right. All he wanted was a little space at the bottom of the garden to express his own creativity and a place to occasionally hide out. The fact that he chose the bottom of the garden tells me that he did have you in mind all along. He knew not to be out in the open, so as to not to disturb your Feng Shui. 😍 He truly loves you very much.

Daniel doesn't look the sort to pull a fast one on ya, but I think he really did. He knew that COVID could leave you any minute and didn't waste a single moment executing his little scheme, I mean his virtuous plans. He built a house back there.

    Wow 😳🤭😬
That was a very interesting conversation for sure. But
As far as I’m concerned, the problem is not really, resolved yet. Seems to me that the workshop can be divided in two parts a beautiful she shed, and a manly workshop. Just think a special small outdoor sitting room, cushy sofa, chandelier, lots of flowers an oasis in the backyard a place to read a book or take a nap.
Hated to hear about the Covid. Hopefully is all behind now ❤
    See you next week ❤

Charlotte- that is very thoughtful of you! I’ll have to look him up. The funny thing is- I find myself tiring quicker than I did prior to having Covid and another odd thing is I never had back problems until after Covid. Go figure?!

@@thetartantopiary On the show with Robert Clancy, MD, ivermectin is helping oxygen counts in blood cells. It is helping the spike proteins to stop clumping. Once anyone has Covid virus, it is forever in the system as with all viruses. I had Lyme when I was 15. Campbell gives research for zinc mineral, D3 vitamin. Finding a doctor to give ivermectin in the US is not easy. I have been reading and watching the New Jersey Medical Historical Society, with Turpentine Sheet Anchor Medicine, which Daniel would love, since Princeton scientists present papers. 3 ounces of Turpentine is lethal. Turpentine was used for parasites (CDC estimates 80% of US has parasites) malaria, cholera, gangrene and something else especially during the Civil War, but also before and after.

He did it when you couldn't say much. Patriarchy unbridled. If he were REALLY sorry, "IT" would be dismantled, the remains removed and donated to a good cause away from your premises. Shrugging shoulders and mumbled apologies are not a correction of wrongs done. I know this sounds like an extreme response, but I have witnessed these kind of tactics many times over in my almost 69 years. So tired of the strategy and how it gets what is wanted while we acquiesce to keep a relationship together. He's got his Mojo Dojo Casa House. Perhaps he might move in there. I hope you are feeling better now. Long Covid has been challenging. RIP your lovely perennial flowers. At least you have photos.🌺🌹🌼🌷🌻
