The last thing I ever heard my mother sing! She had dementia quite badly but had sung in quality chamber choirs my whole life Somehow she managed in the choir beyond reason or rhyme Bless her, Nancy
Dementia is a cruel disease, but at least she could enjoy this piece. Memory is a powerful thing that most don't even consider until they start having issues. I hope you are ok now, I know how badly it affects the relatives. As the next comment says it must be a hard piece to hear and yet I suspect it's also strangely comforting. Peace.
I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your grandmother, but very glad you heard her sing this impossibly beautiful piece! As a lifelong chorale singer I can only hope to remember and be able to sing this in my even older old age - I’m 70 now- and sang this several times with my choir in Scotland, the first time Morten Lauridsen was with us.. Such simple words, and such beautiful notes…yet we all are brought to tears. Much love. I hope you can now remember your grandmother fondly and with less pain… ❤
In December, 2002, our family sat in the front row and listened as the LA Master Chorale performed this work flawlessly. We were there with our Gramma, whose life passion was choral music...and who had terminal cancer. We knew it was our last Christmas season with her. This piece -- reduced us all to sobbing messes. Two months later, we played it at her memorial. Fifteen years on, I still ugly-cry whenever I hear this. .......Miss you, Gramma.
Take comfort in knowing that you loving grandmother is in heaven along with, amongst all others, Paul Salamunovich -- who premiered this piece with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in 1994 with a stunning performance and -- according to the composer himself -- was the person to whom this piece was dedicated.
Carrie, Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and memories with us. It is beautiful and having had the joy of singing this piece with a 300 member choir, it was a spiritual experience that brought me great joy. I’m sure your Gramma (in Heaven) loves it when you think of her when hearing this song. God bless you. ❤️
Music, specially this Music, is a gift from Almighty God, in this particular piece, the text expresses the Mystery of The Incarnation in The Virgin Mary by the power of The Holy Spirit of The Only Begotten Son of God, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, may God The Father give you all to Him, so you all can also be saved, love and obey Him, hence, after this short life on this earth, have Eternal Life and live in His Glory forever, Amen
WOW what a piece! Christian or no this touches your soul. And "SheetMusicVideo" thank you SOOOO much for the timing of the page turns, as a semi-pro musician it's so refreshing to be able to read the sheet music and have the page turns in the correct places. This truly is "Godly" music. Having recently been bereaved this piece has brought me solace and peace, alongside uncontrollable tears and sorrow. It's amazing how music can just speak volumes about emotion. I imagine Angelic choirs will sound like this to smooth the transition from this world to the next. But whatever your views or beliefs this piece embodies all that is good in humanity. Thanks so much for posting the sheet music it allows us musicians to see just how this masterpiece has been constructed. 👍 A painful, but uplifting sound.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. I sang it in High school almost 25 years ago and it still gives me chills and a lump in the throat. 🙂
Clare : Yes, I know what you mean. For some years, I sang the lowest bass part in this lovely anthem in my church choir; and it was always a struggle to keep my emotions in check. Now, at 80+, my singing days are over (except in my heart); but hearing this lovely anthem again brings memories of Christmas Eves past to my mind, warmth to my heart, and tears of joy to my eyes. Alleluia!!
My favorite Advent and Christmas Eve anthem, in which I sang the lowest bass part in my church choir. Now, many years later (at 80+ my singing days are over -- except in my heart), it is as moving as ever, in this sensitive rendering. Profound thanks !!
I sang with the loyola marymount university choruses in the mid-90s when this piece was composed and performed frequently by the Los Angeles master chorale under Paul salamunovich whom I sang under in lmu. We sang pieces like this one all the time. And it took me years after Paul's passing before I could listen to piece like this one again. And even not, pieces like this one always bring me both joy and tears. I feel the joy because of the beauty of the music and the great memories I have singing. I get tearful because I may never be able to recreate beautiful music like the way we did under Paul again. RIP Paul.
I had the privilege of hearing this utterly beautiful piece of music at a Christmas Eve service at the National Cathedral with my family. It was so stunning and awe inspiring, I could not speak. What a special moment that I shall never forget.
FINALLY singing this at Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton, Ohio. It has been on my "dream piece" list for years and now I finally get to dissect it and couldn't be more excited. We are also singing Moses Hogan's My Soul Has Been Anchored In The Lord. Can't wait!
derek xiao Derek, believe me that you will love this piece all the more when you truly know and love the Lord Jesus. He left the perfect love of his father in Heaven to rescue you, me, and all humankind.
This absolutely gorgeous anthem was sung at the Christmas Eve Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols from King's College, Cambridge a few years back. I loved it on first hearing, and now have it top billing on my iPod! A truly wonderful piece.
Many years ago I got into my vehicle, switched on the engine and Classic FM UK.was playing this piece. It was half way through and I switched off my engine and thought this is Godly music, and found out who wrote it.Since then I've listened to so much more of the human voice singing. The bible says that God sings and dances over us,He thought of singing and dancing first. What does worship around sound and look like around the throne. One day I will be hearing, singing and dancing around the throne.
I've now added CC closed caption subtitles in German, English and the original Latin text. Subscribe. Like. Share. Enjoy! Thanks for supporting SheetMusicVideo #ShMuVi.
I think Sheet Music Video is fabulous! I am a LONGtime choral singer and I find these Sheet Music videos really helpful in practicing my music! THanks!
This is my favorite piece to perform. It is so flexible and intimate. I love the numerous interpretations you can take with it. Lauridsen is by far one of my top three composers I've ever had the pleasure I singing music for.
Yes, mostly. We did Rutter's Requiem about three years ago (amazing!) and Vivaldi's Gloria the next year. Haven't done an acapella piece yet, so this should be interesting. We are a completely "lay" volunteer choir, so...wish us well!
"O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger! Blessed is the virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord, Jesus Christ. Alleluia!"
Benji Britten Hey, great Handle, too. One of my Favorite Composers, Britten. His Sinfonia da Requiem is SUBLIME. So you’re Captivated by this piece too? I imagine you know the translation then: O Great Mystery! I’ll work on finding the full translation and will post it if I find it.
Magnifique découverte ! Merci ... DF (France)
This is incredible! I played this for high school band and it was so beautiful. Now that I'm in choir in college i want to sing this for bass but i can only go down to E3. If only i could go to D3
One of the keys to understanding the liturgical aspects of this piece is to know its position in the Christmas Eve liturgy. Alleluia is forbidden during Lent and Advent so it is not said or sung in the 4-5 weeks leading up to the moment of Christ's birth. O Magnum Mysterium occurs in the liturgy at the very moment of birth so the first Alleluia @3.40 is the announcement. Lauridsen's first declaration is mezzo-forte then forte which could be interpreted as a mistake by the angels being too excited at the birth of the baby. So it quiets. Then it resumes mezzo-piano @6:03 diminishing to pianissimo. There are many more settings of O Magnum Mysterium from Victoria to Poulenc but none touches me as much as Lauridsen's.
We just sang this in the Chautauqua Choir at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York State. It was part of a "Christmas in August" type program.

playing it in wind symphony (band)... i play bass clarinet and my band director arranged our arrangement, we have about 40-50 in our wind symphony, i love it!
Lauridsen is a very gifted composer. As someone who also has The Gift of being given Songs/Harmonies/Rhythms from a Higher Place to share with humanity I find myself poring over the scores of pieces I love Trying to discern What It Is that makes a piece Tick, whether it’s a certain Chord Voicing, or a certain Rhythm, even the usage of a certain combination of instruments and/or voices. But there’s nearly Always a Hook (a Jazz term I guess; not that it makes any difference). But listening to this piece just now (for the 317th time) I found myself following the 2nd Tenor line (I’m either a 2nd Tenor or a Baritone, depending…) and for anyone curious about The Hook, ITS NOT IN THAT PART…. As. Matter of fact, that part is hard to follow; its so nondescript. But there’s Something in that part I don’t Get.
The dynamic range compression of audio recordings makes this score impossible to recreate by technical means. Never found a recording of it, combined with audio equipment, witch makes it unnecessary to adjust the volume. I wonder what the decibel range is in real life? Never heard it live though...

Can never get enough of this sublime music. Morten Lauridsen is a genius with a rich soul. Thank you for the beautiful rendition!
Bored in quarantine? Time to learn O Magnum for fun
hey how did you know i was going to do that?
yeppppp
This might also be a good diagnosig tool :P if you can sing it without a need to steal air, you probably dont have the virus :)
Same here ;-)
I'm not a Christian, but this is godly.
Sacred music is one of the few aspects of the Christian tradition I've retained unalloyed respect for now that I'm an atheist.
^ One does not need to be of any religion to appreciate music that comes to us from the divine otherworldly.

@@elizabethterlinden3078 I'm in agreement with you.

I sing it today on a concert and i can't stop the tears while i'm singing this... it's really godly.

My favorite Advent and Christmas Eve anthem, in which I sang the lowest bass part in my church choir. Now, many years later (at 80+ my singing days are over -- except in my heart), it is as moving as ever, in this sensitive rendering. Profound thanks !!

Listening to this for practice for mass. I absolutely love this beautiful song.
Listening/singing with this recording has become a daily meditation for me this December.
Me too starting today
Wonderful performance. I've heard many settings of this old text. Lauridsen's is so fine. What a great choir!
The first piece I have ever heard from Dr. Lauridsen. Such beautiful and angelic music.
FINALLY singing this at Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton, Ohio. It has been on my "dream piece" list for years and now I finally get to dissect it and couldn't be more excited. We are also singing Moses Hogan's My Soul Has Been Anchored In The Lord. Can't wait!
My Soul's a hecka good tune, sung it with the Peabody Chorus when I was 10
Not even religious, but I love this

I sang this version with my choir a few years back and it was my favorite song we did.
my high school choir started signing this today and it’s absolutely stunning
Marvelous music from ever and for ever
Love the layout. We can follow the music! I appreciate this as a life-long choir participant
This is an incredibly sensitive performance. Bravo, Boston Trinity Church Choir!

Truly an inspirational praise and worship composition at the highest level, peace and good will during the holidays.
How can anyone dislike this piece of music, so moving.
I'm learning the soprano part for a professional choir audition...this is simply sublime...I hope to do it justice.
so rock solid a composer..not a spare note out of place..gorgeous
Morten Lauridsen is incredible!
Will be singing this later for the Christmas eve mass.
Alto2 here
ruth romero very happy you have that experience. Lyric soprano here
The mystery of the power of music too. Affects me deeply.
ahhh. needed this today. thank you God for making ML.
Wow. This music is stunning. My school choir is singing this and I am just blown away by its extraterrestrialness.
Glad to hear a school choir is brave enough to tackle it! Should inspire you guys :)
So beautiful, it makes my heart break.
Lauridsen is the best, least-known American composer. Beautiful music. Thanks for posting the score with the track!!
I would agree with best, but he's hardly the least known. His music is sung by choirs everywhere, from high school to professional.
I once heard a version for wind band... Stunning and touching at the same time!!
Absolutely magnificent. Breath-taking!

So beautiful!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is one of the best arrangements of O Magnum Mysterium I have ever heard.
The bass two part in this song encompasses exactly my range from top to bottom :D
So cool
Thanks, now I'm crying and I have to send this to everyone I sang this with
Our United Methodist Churh choir in Anchorage AK is singing it in a few weeks. We are a bit daunted but this will help us a lot!
Thx for the comment. What other repertoire are you singing? Mostly American composers?
Yes, mostly. We did Rutter's Requiem about three years ago (amazing!) and Vivaldi's Gloria the next year. Haven't done an acapella piece yet, so this should be interesting. We are a completely "lay" volunteer choir, so...wish us well!
A wonderfull recording of this exceptional Work! Chapeau!
I sang this last year as a sophomore. I was a low bass 2 (so I was the low D2’s in the allelujah section and at the end) so It was really fun!
"O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
the Lord, Jesus Christ.
Alleluia!"
Bravo .! Beautiful.
i got to sing this a few years ago, as a soprano. i loved the experience. wish i could do it again
listening this for orchestra, and wow! this is godly 😂💖
all magnum mysteriums seem to be incredibly beautiful (or so have the ones i've heard been)

I hear this piece on Lutheran Public Radio from time to time...so moving.
Very good !
Thanks for uploading

Beautiful
Maravilhoso ♥️💖💖👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
We just sang this in the Chautauqua Choir at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York State. It was part of a "Christmas in August" type program.
JUST BEAUTIFUL
Hermoso ¡¡
What group is this? Sounds like a boys choir on the SA parts...
Matt....you always expose me to awesome stuff. Thank you!

Is that why it says contralto? I'm pretty sure that is another term for countertenors.

That's what I LOOK FORWARD to! There are songs that go down to low Bs.
Javier Martin If you want low Bs, you should definitely check out Chesnokov and similar composers, and also look into orthodox male choirs.
Edoxil yes! :)
Edoxil Mahler 2 as well :)
OH!....... MAMME C'EST TRÉS MERVEILLEUX!....
Nossa!!! Divino, muito obrigado =D
Прекрасно!

one line in one breath
I wish I could...
I've done it breathing as indicated (bass 2), but only because I developed lung capacity climbing to 6100 metres in Peru.

We're singing this as a church choir this Christmas Eve. The sheet music with it here is so helpful as a way to practice. I just love this piece.
Oh thanks, it's a wonderful piece - I think it's being discovered more and more by choirs year on year.
playing it in wind symphony (band)... i play bass clarinet and my band director arranged our arrangement, we have about 40-50 in our wind symphony, i love it!
a whole box of Kleenex worth of tearful magnificence
Thats a great help thanks - Im singing the lower Tenor line all on my own - arghh
Good luck!
+Mik Parsons TENOR 2's FTW!! :D
We´ve all been there! Keep it up! :D

i heard my son's choir sing this in The Sistine Chapel in 2001... that was a pretty good live version i'd say... it was perfect through my tears
