Airborne Troops (VDV) - genus of the Armed Forces,which means Supreme Command and intended to reach the enemy in the air and perform tasks in his rear to disrupt command and control, seizure and destruction of ground-based elements of precision weapons, disrupt the advance and deployment of reserves violation Job logistics and communications,as well as cover-up (defense) individual areas, areas exposed flanks, blocking and destruction of airborne troops landed,had broken through enemy forces and perform other tasks.
In peacetime,Airborne Troops have primary responsibility for the maintenance of combat and mobilization readiness at a level ensuring their successful application as intended.
3 unique fact about VDV
1) Russian Paratroopers the only kind of troops in the world, which emerged victorious from a complete encirclement of the enemy (Defensive battle at the height of 3234 in Afghanistan and battle in the Argun Gorge at height of 776 in Chechnya.).
2) Only VDV may parachute in armored vehicles (Airborne NATO limited only by landing cargo and ammunition).

The difference with western forces is that Russian combat doctrine is to get up close and personal. Stemming from the brutal combat in WW2 where the Whermact forces where very reluctant to face the Russian forces in hand to hand combat. Since they employed the special entrenching tool that all Russian soldiers now love which where sharpened at both sides and used as a weapon. So all in all the divide of western and Russian forces is quite stark Russian soldiers are prepared for brutal combat and hand to hand confrontations to take the fight to the enemy and ultimately to win.

About the first fact, it was not only the VDV survived a siege of the enemy, the American paratroopers of the 101st airborne division also, bastogne in Belgium on 44/45, hamburger hill in vietna in 1969, and Barawala Kalay in Afghanistan in 2011. but beautiful video , paratrooper troops are my favorite.
