Always enjoy your content. Your Cornwell trek was great. Thank you. Just FYI, something for your vast GeoWizard mental database. In the last location which was Los Angeles, the "Monthly Parking" sign had the phone # Area Code 213. This is the original area code for the LA Area and retained by LA proper and other cities in the general area of LA. The outlying cities were changed to area codes 818 (north-Burbank), 626 (east-Pasadena), Always greatful for your wonderful content.
I’m from LA and knew where it was right away, however it was quite odd and very misleading due to the recently cut trees and very overcast and unusually wintery day. I’m impressed Tom.
I was stoked to get a perfect score first round then see what happened to you! I think that's the first time I've ever beaten you on a round score! I screwed up the Indonesian round, stupidly picking Perth, Australia for that one. I also managed to narrow down LA as the last city, if you have a zoom in you can actually see the South Korean flag, so that helped me out... but you still beat me overall. I got 17108. I always have fun on these. Onya Tom!
"Low number" area codes were given to American cities with large populations (NYC 212, LA 213, Chicago 312, etc.) because back in "the day" they were dialed with pulse dialing, meaning that if you had the cities that were called most often have low numbers, you would save time because it would take a lower amount of pulses to list out the area code.

it's quite impressive how good you still are despite not really uploading geoguessr a lot anymore. Or you're just a really lucky guesser Anyways quite enjoyable to finally see another geography video again. Been a while since the last one unfortunately
@3:48 Yliopiston Apteekki = Pharmacy of University. While it is owned by the University of Helsinki, they have stores in most bigger cities in Finland. The advertisement board on the ground where you picked up the .fi URL actually revealed the city as well. Other than the first round (helped by having home ground advantage) my game was absolutely miserable. Didn't get a single country right after that, and didn't even manage to double my score in the last four rounds.
Cannot believe a city I lived in finally draws! Lived in Oulu for many months; you were right in front of the main mall; thanks to which shopping in winter is still doable!
We really had the opposite experience on this one Tom. I got the Oulo round super quickly - the street advert you looked at literally said Oulu! But man, the rest I had no chance on. Well, I got the continents right (even if I *almost* went Canada on the Indonesia round, because I thought it said Calgary on the lorry at first..). I even fell for the Slovenia bait. And man, the weather being overcast really threw me off it being LA. The architechture did imply it, but the weather was so shit that I ultimately ened up guessing on the east coast.
I did fairly well with 24,928 points and some luck: R1 Said Oulo on the poster which you missed; then straightforward 5k with the name of the mall and the pharmacy. R2 Fairly clear Malaysia with black pole sticker. Skyscraper made me lean KL and I found somewhere matching with the alignment but it was 7.5 km off. R3 Indonesia (front plate on motorbike). Quite industrial so Java is likely but it didn't seem to be big enough for Jakarta. There was a paved road and I have heard of Surabaya pavement so I went there (maybe lucky, not even sure whether this was the Surabaya pavement). The white houses looked quite distinct, maybe something to remember. Couldn't find a matching street. R4 Slovakia due to "Slovenskej" and looks. A lot of green to the East so I thought Bratislava was a bit less likely so I went to Kosice. Spent most of the time scanning there but didn't find something matching. With time low I just moved to the next town, Presov, which also happened to have a lot of the right angles. And I found a Slovensko street immediately and then also something that kind of matched but it was wrong as we were actually on Matice Slovenskej street. It probably actually said this on the building but due to stitching glitch it wasn't visible well. Anyway, quite happy with the result being just 1.3 km off. R5 The "South Coast Towing" sign had two four letter abbreviations starting with L.A. on it so I was quite confident on the city. Also found 6th street and the mountains North but couldn't find the street we spawned on as I couldn't see any POIs with the names we saw. 462 m off.
A very North American specific knowledge - Area Codes (the first three digits in a 10 digit phone number) were originally assigned by population, with the higher populations having lower (quicker to dial) numbers. So NYC was 212, LA was 213, Chicago was 312, Detroit was 313 etc. if you can remember the first four or five, that makes it easier to narrow down. When the last round started and that 212 number came up, I was yelling “ELL-AYY” to my phone. Never been there but that was the only hint I had.
It definitely had a GTA 5 feel to me. Though I was thrown off it being a bit west of downtown since I always assumed LA is just 5 skyscrapers in downtown and then nothing but single family suburbs for hundreds of miles with a dozen freeways in between.
i was ahead of you for most of it! i got a perfect score for the oulu round. i got a 4950 in the malaysia round; i decided it was malaysia based on the license plates and then figured it was kl for the same reason you did. i guessed britain in the fourth round (yeah i know.) and then on the last round, i realized it was slovakia because of the "papier" (which slovenia doesn't have for paper, they have "papir"), and i figured it wasn't bratislava because it was too flat, and i was in prešov initially and i changed it last minute to košice. close enough. and then on the last one i just kinda fucked up i was looking at the biggest cities to see if they could fit the numbered streets + north south grid, but i didn't see the palm tree and it didn't look tropical so i skipped la and went chicago. anyway, this was fun!
@ParaditeRs Oulu is known among cyclists and urban planners as basically the ideal counterexample to "but you can't build bike lanes in snowy places, nobody will use them"
NotJustBikes has made a very popular video about the cycling infrastructure and winter cycling in Oulu, so quite a few people have heard of it outside of Finland too 😄 But as a Finn I'm always happy when someone even recognises the language. (The only thing Tom gets minus points from me for was calling Finland Scandinavian, for some stupid reason most of the British people I've met have been taught that in school. Quite a few of them have ended up googling it only to find out they're wrong. Finland is a Nordic country yes, but not Scandinavian.)
@@bryndayy I could be wrong but when the codes were set up they would have been on dial phones. The big city's numbers mean that it takes less time to dial as the 1s, 2s and 3s are at the top of the ring.
@@darrensmith3337 yeah, then actually, it would make sense that the original commenter meant ALL digits, not just the numbers themselves. So 208 wouldn't count because 8 isn't a low number
1. Figured the language was Finnish, saw on the bottom left of the bike sign 'Oulu' and knew that was a city, looked at pedestrian areas, found the "Apteekki" got all 5000 pts 2. Had no idea but it felt Malaysian [MBPO - I also thought the M could stand for Malaysia], took a wild guess with Kuala Lumpur and got 4925 3. Really had no clues other than it looked Southeast Asian, guessed in Kuching, Malaysia and got 2396 4. Saw "Slovenska" on the building and guessed in Slovenia [Maribor] but it turned out to be Slovakia - 3487. 5. Felt like USA, saw palm trees in the background and "south coast" so knew it was a southern city by the coast - thought Florida at first but the bike lanes made me think California - the blurred license plates looked more like California than Florida. GUessed San Diego but it was in Los Angeles - 4376 TOTAL: 20,184
I love Hybrid because it was a hybrid car. Blue strip at the front of the licencce plates, tells me were in Europe and Papier propably the word paper in another language, maybe france.

462 m off.
On the 4th round, there is a reserved parking space for a license plate starting PO, which implies the city, so it's actually quite doable..
I enjoyed your journeys, but it's great to see the guessr video's as well. Sry about the books, I already have a book :)
"I love KY" - Tom aka GeoWizard
A very North American specific knowledge - Area Codes (the first three digits in a 10 digit phone number) were originally assigned by population, with the higher populations having lower (quicker to dial) numbers. So NYC was 212, LA was 213, Chicago was 312, Detroit was 313 etc. if you can remember the first four or five, that makes it easier to narrow down. When the last round started and that 212 number came up, I was yelling “ELL-AYY” to my phone. Never been there but that was the only hint I had.
" get in , are we recording yeeeeeeeeeeeessss
You bell sniff "
The LA one had me because I knew at first glance. So glad you pulled it off at the end haha
213 .... instant answer.
The signs, the apartments, the palm trees, the hills, the bank building. Ah home.
For the first one, the sign you got the internet domain from had Oulu written on the bottom left
That is great if you know that Oulu is a city beforehand 😂
@ParaditeRs Oulu is known among cyclists and urban planners as basically the ideal counterexample to "but you can't build bike lanes in snowy places, nobody will use them"
@@thespanishinquisiton8306 So you're saying it is known by nobody. Gotcha.
Urban planning is definitely a thing in most online spaces these days and I can't imagine it doesn't have a significant overlap with Geoguessr
Key for area codes in the US is the lower the numbers, the larger population of the city when they were created. NYC: 212, Chicago: 312, LA: 213.
Well I've learnt something new. Cheers !
This advice doesn't make any sense to me. For example, area code 208 is the whole state of Idaho and 304 is the state of west Virginia.
So 208 wouldn't count because 8 isn't a low number
love this video format of yours
I saw the 213 area code on the building and almost started screaming "It's LA, man. It's LA!"
Tip. Mountains and palm trees in the US is California, if not Hawaii. Not tropical enough for it to be Hawaii.
Today, Tom learns that apothecaries chains are a thing ;-)
Difficult as the English word for it is pharmacy...
I mean, nah, he just had no time and it looked similar, I'm sure he'd have known that it can be a thing lol
Nice to see you in Finland Tom! Keep an eye out for the big OULU text on the sign you watched earlier!
first you would need to know what OULU is
The only one I knew, was the 213 area code. I was yelling "Koreatown, Tom!!
Yes!! An OG style vid ❤
i love your geoguessr videos
"I love KY" 🤣🤣Go on Tom.
New merch line coming soon :D
I once was stopped behind a car from Kentucky. It had a personalized license plate "KYLADY".
Maybe someone from Slovakia really likes Kentucky? (I know it says I love HYBRID)
1. Figured the language was Finnish, saw on the bottom left of the bike sign 'Oulu' and knew that was a city, looked at pedestrian areas, found the "Apteekki" got all 5000 pts
2. Had no idea but it felt Malaysian [MBPO - I also thought the M could stand for Malaysia], took a wild guess with Kuala Lumpur and got 4925
3. Really had no clues other than it looked Southeast Asian, guessed in Kuching, Malaysia and got 2396
GUessed San Diego but it was in Los Angeles - 4376
TOTAL: 20,184
I used to live 2-3 blocks from that 5th location. Incredible last minute guess well done🎉
thats sum good old-fashioned play-a-long fun
Don't overtrhink it dude! Great job!
It is absolutely wild that I knew the last one instantly. That has never happened.
I 💙 Hybrid
Your eyes are going Tom!
I recognized that first spot immediately, used to live like a block away from that spot and been to that pharmacy many times
3:35 LOL
Red "Peugeot" was indeed a Skoda
I love Hybrid because it was a hybrid car. Blue strip at the front of the licencce plates, tells me were in Europe and Papier propably the word paper in another language, maybe france.
Wow, the Isle of KY, who knew P Diddy's apartment was so internationally recognized.
The Cornwall videos were probably my favourite you’ve done mate, made me want to go Cornwall, £140 on the train though no thank you robbing bastards
4:00 to me that actually felt unfair 😂 despite what some conmenters remarked about the city name being visible somewhere
And boy that last one, deserved a Get In!
Just for fun decided to check your content first time in a year, and right off the bat - my home city, Oulu.
