Remarkable vocal performances. I particularly enjoyed the jazz and R&B oriented artists at the end of this video:
0:57:03 Elliott Skinner, Autumn Leaves
1:01:22 Christina Takayama, Boplicity [Bebop Lives]
1:05:03 Nathan Heldman, All Alone [Left Alone] [This is my favorite track, partly because Nathan Heldman is my grandson.]
1:08:20 Carolina Rojas, I’d Rather Go Blind
1:11:19 Tyné Freeman, Just Like A Star In My Heart
1:16:05 Elena Pinderhughes, Sweet Georgia Brown
More on 1:05:03 Nathan Heldman, All Alone [Left Alone] [the seldom heard Mal Waldron/Billie Holliday composition, which curiously enough was never recorded by Billie Holliday, though often by Mal Waldron, who was her piano player toward the end. Here, Nathan really gets inside the lyric. Even though he is an original improviser, he just sings the ballad. I can imagine Billie smiling. Also, listen to Abbey Lincoln, from the Straight Ahead CD @ Abbey Lincoln - Left Alone on UA-cam]
More on 1:01:22 Christina Takayama, Boplicity [Bebop Lives] [I’ve been crazy about Boplicity from the 1st moment, on Miles’ Birth Of The Cool LP, and then the vocal, heard 30+ years ago on the dearly departed LA radio station KNOB-FM, from Mark Murphy’s Bop for Kerouac. The Miles Davis/Gil Evans chart had lyrics by the unsung hero, Ray Passman. Check out Mark Murphy - Bebop Lives (Boplicity) on UA-cam, which has the lyric laid in on the video track.]
