I've recommended this to many reactors, but I've never seen anyone bite and do it. Congrats to whoever led you to this. It's a great piece to analyze.
Just the pure guts to do that LONG solo at the head (very close to A capella)... And in front of a very savvy crowd. It's gorgeous.
Ben Folds is a Pop Singer and Composer (like Sara), but with a very esoterric background (including classical). Bringing him into the NSO for a guest leadership period (I forget how long) was a stunt, but it gave both parties good press and led to performances like this.
Recommendation: Go look for Sara's performances on the "Live From Here" stage show (the channel got renamed "Radio Heartland" for some reason). All of her work there is great but "Someone Who Loves Me" is a good place to start. Also on that same channel? ANYTHING from Rachael Price, but especialky "Take It With Me". That's one of the most moving performances I've ever seen.

A great reaction about a beautiful performance. At the end, your analysis on the production of the vowel sounds by each singer, given her particular background, was really brilliant.

I loved your breakdown of this gorgeous song, but honestly, I could listen to you discuss the finer points of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and still be amazed at the depth of your knowledge.

Poor Ben Folds. I don't blame people for not knowing, but he had a very successful career as an alt rock singer/song writer in Ben Folds Five. People of a certain generation will easily recognize him and his voice. Very cool that he has a presence in the classical world. Love to see talented people find ways to reinvent themselves as the years go by.

Heard Sara in concert at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Extraordinary intonation for the entire concert!

Ben Folds and Sara Bareilles were judges on season three of the Sing-Off, Elizabeth Bank’s a cappella elimination show.

I know sara wrote the lyrics and melody for this one but it sounds much different on the record and very different from her other performances of the song. I really like this version, I think Ben Folds added a lot

One of my favorite Sara Bareilles songs is "Gravity."

Love this reaction. I was thinking of your reactions when I was rewatching the Cynthia Erivo video of the song Alfie at the Kennedy Center in honor of Dione Warwick. She has classical training, musical theater/acting chops, and is steeped in the music of blues and jazz. I think she used skills from all these genre to bring off an amazing performance. I think you would like it.

It’s a pipe organ which is very pronounced but not visible in this video that plays the constant pedaled note.
