I never thought the wall separating east and west Berlin would ever come down. The World celebrated the day it did.
My sister was in Germany on a trip about a month after the wall fell and she was able to rent a pickaxe to chip off pieces of it - I still have mine tucked away in a box. To look at it, it's just a piece of concrete, but it's cool to know I'm holding a piece of the Berlin Wall. Like you, growing up in the 70s and 80s, I thought it would be there forever.
@@dbradx I remember asking my father when I was a kid why there were two german teams on the football world cup. That was in 1978 and/or 1982, can't remember. Then I remember very well that I was watching the news on TV in 1989 that they made the wall fall. I was 16 and didn't know anything about it. In my country there were just two TV channels by that time and we had little information about the other countries in Europe. In school they taught us about the two World Wars, but probably my teachers should have mentioned very little about the wall, as well.

Same here. Sadly, our youth was not around to see the differences between our free country and the Eastern Block, so we are moving closer to the same limitations put on our speech and thought as was the case in East Germany and the Soviet Union. History is not being taught truthfully.

Scorpions are one of the most underrated bands ever.
They have sold over 100 million albums. My favorite band ever. I don't think they are underrated.

Back then I felt that this was an important song for us German people. I'm from Bavaria, but we had relatives in East Germany. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes, when I heard the newscaster say that the wall had come down and when I saw all those people in Berlin crying, laughing, partying and falling into each others arms. It was unbelievable! Relatives and friends that had been separated from each other for 28 years could finally meet again!
What a shame it couldn't happen to Korea.

When I saw the Berlin Wall come down I CRIED Jay.
I live near the border, and we see People crying in the arms of other People. I was 14 and my friends and i drive Tochter the border. It was unbelievible. Sorry im my englisch is horrible. Every time when i think of it,there are tears in my eyes😁 Regards from Germany

I was teaching in a class of high school seniors in 1991. It was a study period and we allowed music. Living my first 40 years in the shadow of the Cold War there was real hope it was finally over. When this song came on the radio and I looked out at all those young people, I had to do all I could not to cry. Of course world peace wasn't just around the corner. But the Iron Curtain finally did come down for millions of people in Eastern Europe.
Berlin anthem starts with whistling, it was powerful to witness history in the making. East meets West with the wall being torn down and President Ronald Reagan saying, "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

This song is about the end of the Cold War. I had a chance to see the Scorpions live in Moscow years ago, but I couldn't get anyone to go with me and it wasn't safe to go out at night alone as a female foreigner in Russia in 1997, a few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. I have followed the Moskva River down to Gorky Park, though (Moskva is the Russian word for Moscow), in homage to this song.
I have never been to Moscow, but I was able to visit Berlin Germany in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I have pass through Checkpoint Charlie a few times and it is a dream of mine to stand one day in a free, unified Berlin. Maybe someday maybe my wife and I will take that same walk along the Moskva down to Gorky Park, as well.
@@JimiBurleigh At the time, there honestly wasn't much at all to Gorky Park, but that was 1997, so hopefully it's gotten better since then. I haven't been to Germany but it's definitely on my bucket list to visit Berlin at some point.
A lot of things have changed. I lived near Checkpoint Alpha for 20 years.
It doesn't exist anymore but they've turned the East German checkpoint into a museum.
I first heard this song in a bar in France when I was a Marine
I made my son watch the Berlin wall coming down, he was pissed at me at the time. Now that he's older he told me he was really glad . The world was joy's at that moment . Enjoy

The world was frozen in time at that moment when the Berlin wall came down in 1989 and the 2 Germany's were united again, dissolving the larger rift between east and west. The whole world needs to be like that again. - "The wind of change blows straight into the face of time, like a storm wind that will ring the freedom bell."
It was a huge hit in 1991, The Berlin Wall had come down in late 1989 & the Eastern Bloc was splintering when they recorded this in 1990 & it collapsed in 1991.

I graduated high school in 1988. I remember when the wall came down. This song reminds me so much of that historical event. Thanks Jayy!
Every time I see the scenes with the wall coming down I get teary eyed. I remember watching it happen on tv. It was such a beautiful moment.
It was a powerful moment in time!
One of the best moments of my gig-going life was with this band. I was at the famous Scorpions gig at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in 1999, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall. During this song many many denim and leather clad hairy-arsed heavy rock fans, many of whom were former East Germans, were openly crying and hugging one another "like brothers" - me included. At that moment we felt we could change the world and that we really are all just one people. God, I wish we could all that feel like that again today, the world really needs it.
Scorpions vocalist Klaus Meine said he wrote 'Wind of change' being inspired by the band's first concerts in Russia around 1988/1989... seeing thousands of Russian fans singing their songs. The Soviet Union had once banned the Beatles in the 1960's... and the Scorpions were then playing rock concerts there. He remarked that Germany in World War 2 had invaded Russia and killed millions of their people under the nazi banner... and just 40+ years later, a German rock band 2 generations later, were able to appeal to Russian fans and heal the wounds w/ the power of their music and a message of peace.
After the single's release, East & West Germany reunited as 1 country after decades of being separated by the Berlin wall in 1990... so it meant a lot to the Scorpions...
I listened to this band 30+ years ago! And hoped it would never be this way on earth. Pray and stand together like your life depends on it! Because it does 🙏🙏🙏

I was only 3 years old when the Berlin Wall came down, but this one still gets to me every time.
I was 11. I clearly remember sitting on my grandparents living room floor watching the news about it. My grandfather was crying and my grandmother just sat there with a look of shock on her face. Even as a kid, I understood what I was seeing was world changing.
Even in today's world.....this song has alot of meaning.
The prequel to this is "still loving you" a story about a guy whose in love with a girl from east Germany...while the wall was still there. Strong emotions among the german people when this was played live.
It was literally the largest maximum security prison you've ever seen.

Everytime I hear this song it takes me back to the day the wall came down. I remember my parents and everyone sitting around the TV. Now as an adult this song has a new meaning to me, actually listening to the words. Great reaction 💗
A lot of people actually credit this song for the wall coming down. It was such a massive hit that the Soviets were actually afraid of another song coming out about it making them look bad. Nothing sparks off rebellion like the feeling of hope.
As has been mentioned, this song involves some historical context. It was released in 1990 just after the fall of the Berlin wall and in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union; The line "I follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park" refers to a specific location in the city of Moscow, Russia. The Moskva river runs through Moskva (that's Moscow in Russian, by the way) and Gorky Park has it's own place in history as well. We had such high hopes then. Maybe too high, I'm afraid.
That said, and whilst I haven't yet been able to visit Moscow, I do have it on my "Bucket List" to return one day to a free, united Berlin, Germany. The last time I was there (early 1980's) it was still divided city. and I still have my passport with visa stamps crossing between west and east Berlin through the infamous Checkpoint Charlie. I am old enough to have living memory of both Ronald Reagan's plea, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" as well as John Kennedy's "lch bin ein Berliner" speech (I am a Berliner, but he spoke it in German). To stand in Berlin, a free, united city in a free, united Germany is a lifelong dream of mine. This song always reminds me to work to make that dream come true. Rudolf Schenker (on rhythm guitar) formed The Scorpions in Hanover back in 1965, making them near contemporaries of groups like The Rolling Stones. And until this record (which has sold in excess of 14 million copies and is itself 30 years old in 2021), they were living in the more amenable West Germany. In an era where people are talking endlessly (and belligerently) about border controls, perhaps they should stop and consider the consequences people then faced in crossing from one side of the capital to the other...
One of my favorites of theirs. The Zoo is my favorite and it is a must do...I am grateful to have seen them live back in 84. One of the loudest concerts i have been to. They had the strippers from a local strip club on stage with them, was awesome. Lucky girls lol Thanks. AKA Lowrider. They are from Germany and this song is about the Berlin wall coming down.
Not entirely, this song was written before the fall, but it eventually came to represent it. It's about the struggles and unions that lead up to it.

Glasnost....the fall of the Soviet Union and the introduction of democracy, such as it is, to the Soviet block and Russia. This was one of the bands "from the west" to perform in Moscow.

My now ex-husband and I were stationed in Spain when this happened. I remember seeing photos in the newspaper, plus hearing a lot on Armed Forces Radio about the wall coming down from East Berlin. We could just feel the possibilities and the hope in the air!
The Scorpions defined my high school years, and still define my music to this day.

This is about the BERLIN WALL doming down 1987! The effects of WWII are still relevant today as the spread of Communism is now in the America! My favorite song and to see the Scorpions in concert was monumental! One of the best!
Given what's happened this century, it's difficult to imagine the optimism that was presented at the time. And it turned out we were right not to imagine it. But for a while things seemed possible. I remember seeing the Berlin Wall come down, and talking about it, and the dissolution of the Communist Bloc with my high school German teacher. We could always get out of various assignments by getting her to tell us about her life in Germany. What it had been like to be a little girl in in WWII Germany, how she and her sister had gotten over the Wall, things like that. She had a fascinating life.
Sounds like someone I'd love to spend a day just talking to.

I was lucky to be able to see them live many times. They were amazing. When they first came to America they didn't know any english. They sure could sing it though. Of course in time they learned. 🔥
I was in high school in 1989... I remember the wall coming down, and Germany becoming whole again... Shortly after, this song was playing my last year in high school, and I remembered all that had happened, not so long ago... Even today, I remember all these events like they happened yesterday.... So happy to be alive, when great events like these happen, and are brought to life, in song.❤❤❤
The man climbing on the tank, no one knows his name but everyone who saw what he did knows he is a hero. He stood in front of a column of tanks forcing them to stop. While the column eventually resumed their trek to Tiananmen Square for a moment a HERO stood taller and stronger than any army. My heart goes out to those brave souls who died standing up for freedom in China. May your dream one day come true.
Such a powerful song. Im blessed to have history made in 1989. For a brief time. We felt the world has been one with all the political changes in the world. Our oppressive brothers and sisters were free and celebrated their hearts. Why can't the world be like 1989 again

Back in 77 while stationed in Germany I discovered a band called Lake ,they have a song called Welcome to the west,, Plus a few other songs I believe they had two albums
The whistling was the drawing in with a haunting sound than singing picked up the rest with the whistling in the background gave this song a meaning going clear to the soul. This was pure genius the way it was all arranged.
I was so fortunate to see Scorpions on August 28, 1984, at the Meadowlands Arena (NJ). Their opening band was Fastway (“Fast” Eddie Clarke of Motörhead). Great show. Scorpions singer Klaus Meine is one of my favorite voices ever. If you haven’t already reacted to it, “Still Loving You” is highly recommended. It’s such a gorgeous song. 💜💜💜 (There’s a live version with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra that is amazing.)
Also. If you like whistling songs, you might like Rammstein’s (another German band) “Engel” (Angel). The live version from New York at MSG is beautiful. 💜💜💜

I was stationed in Germany on November 9th 1989. The day the Berlin wall fell. Just a few months prior my unit went to the border at Graf and had AK-47's pointed at us from across all that barbed wire

I was 11 when the wall came down, and I watched it on tv with my grandparents. And while I may not have fully understood everything about it at the time, I KNEW something major was happening. Nothing had ever made my grandfather cry, or my grandmother shut up before or since in my life.
Ronald Reagan didn't make it happen. He was a notorious hardliner that almost triggered world war 3 by joking about it into a hot microphone . To many in Europe he was like an early combination of the Trump and Biden. After Bush I took over in 1989 it was revealed that Reagan was seriously senile during his last time in power.
The Scorpions wrote this song after the Berlin Wall came down, marking the end of the Soviet Union in Germany. Since the Scorpions are from Germany it was a particularly emotional time for the band.
