I used to live in Mexico and I was told by an immigration official that Americans did not need an immigrant visa to reside in Mexico for less than 180 days. The tourist card given to me on the plane was sufficient and valid for at least 90 days, or I could ask the immigration official at the port of entry to extend it to 180 days. Extending the tourist card to 180 days is completely at the discretion of the immigration official at the port of entry or at the immigration office in most major cities. Foreigners are NOT, however, allowed to work at all with only a tourist card. Doing so is officially a serious crime. Once the number of days is completed, the American must leave the country for at least 48 hours before trying to return to Mexico.
So in conclusion, living in Mexico with tourist card does not make an American an illegal in Mexico.

ESUSAMEX hhhhmmm similar to americans comming here to Canada .... except you have to go back for 24 hrs vs your 48 hrs ... other than that, its the same 180 days .

@@Leatherkid01 I asked at the pedestrian crossing in Nuevo Laredo what the time limit was, and the official said I could return when the next shift started, and a different official would be on duty. So I hung around in Laredo for the day, crossed back to N.L. in the afternoon, and was in time for the bus going south (which I would have taken the next day). It might officially be 48 hours, but that day it was more like 6 hours.

@ -- I think the emission requirements effect more of the cost of cars than the cost of the fuel. Many Americans are ignorant about real Mexico, sure there are drug cartels in some remote areas or some regions, but there are also vibrant and prosperous cities. Mexico is a big country. Generalizing about Mexico is like saying all of US is like Detroit or the dangerous parts of Chicago.
People think that all of Mexico lives in poverty. Not true, and even the ones that do, they fricken own a house, 100% theirs, no mortgage, utilities are really cheap in Mexico... so think twice next time you think they're in poverty. Sure there are people in poverty, but poverty like some Americans imagine it's probably like 7% at most.
People migrate because really they're bored in their small towns, most Mexicans from cities don't migrate. The small 300 people towns are dead because of Nafta, but even there people can survive as the land is generous, but they're lured by the dollar exchange rate and difference in wages for non-educated citizens. The educated ones stay as it is better for them.
Sure most Mexicans won't change a car every 3 years, eat at fancy restaurants all the time, or have McMansions, but poor poor they're not.

I just cannot believe that you think I am that stupid, but more surprised that, if you are born and raised in the Usa with all the access to education, can't understand such an easily and plainly comment from someone born and raised in a third world country like me, there is nothing wrong with my first comment, you are just too self centered like most people In the Usa to understand it😂😂😂😂

lalotong believe this or not, many Irish in Spain are doing exactly the same as what the American expats are doing in Mexico. One, the costs of living is cheaper in Spain than in Ireland and this is great for many elderly Irish people. Two, for health reasons, old-age pensioners leave Ireland for the warm weathers in Spain when it is winter back home. They return home when the Irish weather improves or when the weather gets too hot in Spain. Elderly Irish people feel acute pains of arthritis during winter and less so in summer.

Dustin, if you own stock get ready for the big drop when the North Korean crisis heats up. The stock market has been going up for the last nine years and the bank traders are going to start unloading all of their 2007 or 2008 stock purchases to take profits. I may be wrong but I don't want any stocks right now. When you get old your priorities are different that when you are young. Can't you see that the people in power do not have the middle classe's best interest at heart. They just want to take care of the wealthiest Americans and quite frankly everyone will suffer in the long run. So it doesn't make any difference if I own stock or work. It only makes a difference when all of you don't realize you are getting screwed one turn at a time . Why would anyone want an unstable president like this guy anyway?

Neither of those two areas would I want to live in. You can't have everything in one place, so you have to make compromises based on the factors that you consider most important to you. For me, freedom (and not having to shovel snow) is important, so I live in Texas. Unfortunately, we made the mistake of going from being our own country to joining the US back in 1846 -- otherwise, we would have probably annexed Mexico and taught them how to do Mexican food *right*... :)

Have a plan B you can set in place if you’re unable to return at the time you planned.
The aduana also has discretion as to who they let in. It’s very rare that they stop anyone, but it’s known to happen. A difficult official can also limit your stay to 90 days rather than give you the full 180.

Well, it is not completely true that all foreigners living in Mexico are immune to Mexican immigration laws. I was deported from Mexico after being imprisoned for a week for just having my tourist Visa expired for less than 3 weeks. And once you are deported, you are permanently punished. For example, for 1 year, I was completely expelled from Mexico. Then, for the next 5 years, the computer showed me as being "restricted " meaning that every time I flew into Mexico City, I was punished for up to 6 or 7 hours, being detained in a small room without being able to leave or use the phone, before , without explanation, they approved my entrance. And today, 8 years after being deported for overstaying my visa or tourist card, I am still being punished by not being able to use the new, quick automated machines in the airport, and having to wait in line for one of the now very few agents to approve my entrance. And for those of you thinking "oh, he must have done something else"...No, my friends, it was for just having my tourist card expired for 3 weeks, that's it.

you are not supposed to live or have a business or a job with a tourist visa. Some of them also overstay their visas. Most take advantage of the loophole and renew their visas every 6 months. That means they are permanently living as a tourist, which means they get to live there without paying most of the taxes that a resident should be paying.

    • @mikedowd66
      @mikedowd66 7 років тому +28

You're not supposed to live with a tourist visa? OK, I get what you mean. But you are wrong. That's exactly the beginning of the path towards citizenship. You first need to "live" there legally on a tourist visa. There is no other way to begin the process. And renewing the visa isn't a loophole. And what taxes are you talking about? Homeowners pay property tax. Yes, you can be a homeowner on a tourist visa. If the government had a problem with it, you wouldn't be able to. If you rent, your landlord pays those taxes. Sales taxes are paid. What other taxes are the tourists skirting? In the end, these "illegal" tourists are generally very good for the economy, everyone understands that.

You left out the best part. Several years ago AARP Magazine did a feature article on great places to retire and Mexico was on the list. They interviewed a number of Americans who had retired there and interestingly enough a fair number of them had been CEOs of large American non profits! Apparently the way to go is to run a non profit that is basically leaching off the American taxpayer and then when you retire instead of paying something back to your home country by volunteering, etc. you skip out to Mexico where you can have a live in maid for less than you dropped a week in NYC at Starbucks. But it gets better, most of the wealthy retired non profit CEOs interviewed complained bitterly about the poor roads, libraries, and health care facilities south of The Wall. Are you listening Mexico?

@Ryan Shannon : funny you say that; I'm from Spain and in Alicante there's like 1 million expatriates from England/Scotland, they've been in Alicante for more than 50 years , they don't want to learn Spanish nor intermingle - integrate in mainstream Spanish society or culture., whereas lately Russians and German immigrants have been arriving in the late 90's and all of them speak Spanish, oh, but yeah, British ask for medicine and medical assistance, asking for all their privileges, that they can acquired, but it is thanks to the very weak Spanish government towards immigration to the brits that they obtain and acquired all their privileges, without paying taxes. So what's your point. oh, and btw, whites in USA are the ones that get more food stamps than anybody else. I see Mexican people as MORE AMERICAN, because at least they have 100% native American DNA, from their ancestors, Aztecs, Mayans, which are considered the real AUTHENTIC AMERICANS. you Anglo American never crossed the color line 500 years ago, whereas the Spaniards did.

Staying for 6 months on a tourist visa isn't illegal. The length of stay can also can be extended while in Mexico. Pretty much the same as here in the US. Let's say 1 out 4 overstayed which is overly optimistic. And if 1 out of 4 retirees are American, that would mean around 1,000 are illegal. 1,000 illegals pouring money into their economy vs easily over a million Mexican illegals fleecing taxpayers in the US. Totally different picture and not even worth bargaining for.

This is a joke. One can come to Mexico and live there. Many thousands own property and come in for six months, leave and return. So long as one is not working for compensation in Mexico, there is not issue with doing this and retuirning every year for a period of time. If one owns real property in Mexico, one pays taxes on it yearly. I have owned a home in Mexico since 1996 and every year I go down and pay the taxes at the local office. In fact, the gringos are probably among the most assiduous when it comes to paying their real estate taxes.
Now if one wishes to move to Mexico permanently they can do so and it is actually pretty easy to do so. One can arrange for a Visa de Residente Temporal - Temporary Resident Visa which allows one to stay longer than six months at a time and which is renewed for up to 4 years. Additionally, one can apply for a Visa de Residente Permanente - Permanent Resident Visa. Under either one can obtain a work permit and work legally in Mexico and many people do so.

not only that, 6 month stays gives a retiree time to travel around and visit so many different cities and towns that are not crowded with rushed tourists trying to do it all in a few days or weeks
the pace of life is different - over time you can learn different ways of enjoying yourself the words and expressions in Spanish the differences in seasoning, drinking, little bits of history you start to understand the Mexican point of view and can see the US from a different perspective
it can take a while to get settled in one place before you get more adventurous
I realized I wouldn't want to live in a lot of the hotter parts of Mexico, at first I though I would get used to Baja Norte which is still close to California and it's easy to go back and forth a lot, learn Spanish, get familiar with the country and move around but I prefer Baja Norte - hot enough for me - just exploring both sides of the Baja peninsula would take a while
eventually you realize you want to be able to understand as much Spanish as possible - you can get by with a minimum amount of English but there is always going to be some kind of language barrier - especially when I'm getting my car worked on or pay to have some other chores it goes a long way to know Spanish and learn regional differences - I can kind of tell sometimes when someone is from the north now - kind of like Spanish with a US western drawl you might hear in Wyoming or Montana
a lot of people in Baja are originally from other parts of Mexico - they will explain how different the customs or food or even politics and religion can be in different Mexican states, just like different states in the US - people in the US lump all Mexicans together but the country is very large and spread out, the diversity in climate is just as diverse as in the US
it's also cheaper to book flights for traveling within Mexico, for that matter flying to Central and South America, it's easier to find great bargains - knowing Spanish can be a big help in other countries further away from the US
