I've paid into the system for 50 years and my employers paid into it as well and the government had control of said funds for that time to invest and accumulate more but instead they took from it and spent it on non refundable programs.

America should have set it up a Sovreign wealth fund. If they did that and invested every dime in the S&P 500 social security from inception, there would be plenty of money in there for everyone.

The government did not take from the SSA.
The SSA by law purchases US Treasury bonds.
The SSA earns interest on the bonds thereby increaaing the pool of money to pay out.
Congress does not fund the SSA it decides how much money it wants to repay each year.
The SSA is the lender not the borrower.
They are the largest domestic holder of federal debt.

@shawnr771 Actually the government has borrowed from SSA to the tune of 1.7 trillion dollars to use on other programs and has been paying it back with just notes but their time on said loans is running out and by next year they have to start paying it back with actual funds. Research it.

I maxed out payments to SS a few years but I will never get out what I paid in. It's in your genes normally that are an indicator of your life span normally. When they said my age group had to be 66.83 years old to collect full retirement, made me think they had some professional Actuary's predicting deaths. I had a brother that worked all his life of 55 years where did his SS payments go? When our government allowed it to be a general account to pull from for whatever they needed was wrong. I hope it is not true that the funding for phones and a check was given to every illegal immigrant was from SS (General Fund). Or, if you prefer, as an employee you pay the full 12.4% because the employer has to put their share of toward SS instead of paying it to you. Either way, you pay the same amount. The tax rate is 12.4%, it comes from the employer, and it comes out of the potential income of the employee. So everyone pays all of it and we're just playing semantics over who is responsible.
