    A great, great role-model; whilst being marvelous music in its own right, this is also a precursor of some of the most sublime music ever written. A teachers´teacher, a pioneer and paragon of good taste.

      I wouldn't entirely agree that this is simple music. It's call too easy to fall into the 19thc trap of putting certain composers on a huge pedestal and belittling everyone else. The reality is that the difference between JS and those around and before him is not that great

    Here’s a Kuhnau Christmas cantata I performed 50 years ago with my madrigal group - in German: Short pieces: Es Ist Ein Kind Geborn. If you have a passionate group of teen agers -try it. An exchange student from a German speaking country is a godsend ! The kids will love the coaching, and….well…need more?
    For off season do: Mer Hahn ein Oberkeet: The J.S. Bach Peasant cantata- and have your kids make up a contemporary story to fill in between choruses and solos: A fine old model performance is by Phyllis Curtin and Paul Mathen.
    At 92 I no longer rank or rate anyone-especially from a culture that has so well protected its heritage. I am forever grateful to free myself from network commercialism. I think of J.S.Bach’s pay coming in part from firewood; and his precious cantatas being used ( after his death) to stick poison glue on trees - while his sons transitional role slipped in where our highest form of devotion should be.
    This was a finest hour ! Bless every soul who contributed - in whatever way.
    Robert E Wood.

    Wonderful stuff. Counterpointing this (the Devil made me say it) to the famous Magnificats (Bach, Vivalidi at least) shows how much this was a genre with expectations, not just an abstract Musical Form like the Romantics relied on, and all the better for it.

      He was Bach''s predecessor as Thomaskantor so that says a lot about his stature as a composer. However, whilst I am not an expert, I do think Bach's Magnificat is superior to Kuhnau's in every single way.

      Vivaldi wrote the same song, 10,000 times!

    • @jsbrules
      @jsbrules 6 років тому +1

      +Peter Page That's a silly old crack about Vivaldi "writing the same thing 1000 times". Just yesterday I was listening to Vivaldi's Gloria and the Domine Deus soprano aria came on and I said, "Who would ever guess this was by Vivaldi?" (I'm not saying I esp like the aria... it's too "galant" for my tastes) The crack has a tiny germ of truth in it -- some of his pieces sound similar, and he is often recognizable, but it is false that he just repeated himself.

    • @openmusic3904
      @openmusic3904 5 років тому

      I think most would agree Bach's Magnificat is vastly superior, particularly in terms of its musical complexity and depth. But I do think there is something extremely beautiful and to the heart about Kuhnau's relative simplicity, it has a sense of being more overtly relatable.

    Johann Kuhnau
    Musicien allemand,
    Né à Geising le6 avril 1660
    Décédé à Leipzig le 5 juin 1722.
    Biographie
    Il étudie la musique à Dresde, alors centre musical important, et devient membre du chœur de la Kreuzschule en 1671. Il retourne à Geising en 1680 pour fuir une épidémie puis fréquente le collège Johanneum à Zittau à l'invitation de son cantor. La mort de ce dernier ainsi que de l'organiste lui permet d'occuper ces deux postes.
    Il fait des études de droit à l'université de Leipzig à partir de 1682. Il devient organiste de l'église Saint-Thomas en 1684 et embrasse la carrière d'avocat après l'obtention de ses diplômes de droit en 1688. Il devient aussi Thomaskantor de saint Thomas en 1701. Les années suivantes sont assombries par la baisse de niveau des élèves, la concurrence de l'Opéra de Leipzig et l'ambition de plusieurs autres musiciens, au premier rang desquels Georg Philipp Telemann. Après sa mort, son poste est attribué à Jean-Sébastien Bach.
    Œuvres
    Son œuvre musicale est un peu oubliée, pourtant ce musicien eut une vraie influence sur la musique allemande de son temps. Elle comprend :

      I think, with a username like that, you're going to be emotionally over-attached to your opinion, and that's going to be your loss. IMHO this is a rather charming, well-crafted piece, quite beautiful in its own way - my own opinion of course. Condemning a work as mediocre, simply because it's not by Bach, perhaps suggests a poor appreciation of the reasons for Bach's greatness.

    • @jsbrules
      @jsbrules 4 роки тому +1

      Paul Berry Thanks for noticing my admittedly childish :-) user name, but I am not prejudiced against other baroque composers - over a third of my baroque UA-cam “favorites” are not by Bach. There is much glorious mid-late baroque music to be heard by (in my own opinion) especially: Zelenka, Handel, Purcell, Stoeltzel, Pergolesi, Rameau, Scarlatti. And even the occasional Vivaldi and dare I say Kuhnau, such as his lovely Christmas Cantata (formerly known as "Bach's" BWV 142) - but this piece ain’t so great. It is not unreasonable to call a spade a spade! And, my saying it is “mediocre” does not mean I am "condemning" it, just being real, pointing out that it is merely... “well crafted”, as you put it, or perhaps "modest" as another poster wrote! Even our beloved JS Bach wrote some mediocre music. Let's be real, people! -"Mr Brules"

    • @TheOneAndOnlyZeno1889
      @TheOneAndOnlyZeno1889 3 роки тому

      @@jsbrules There is nothing mediocre about beautiful, well crafted sacred music - Buxtehude is a perfect example as I hope you would be aware, of Cantata's of immense beauty equal to Bach, even which the often smaller orchestration.
